Differences in Individual Pleo Behaviour
« on: February 27, 2011, 07:26:17 AM »

I got one of my faulty Pleos working, which I'm very pleased about.  He must be quite an old Ugobe Pleo as he's running the original software - he sits still and for the first time I've heard the old style Pleo singing.  It's been really interesting finding out the differences!  :D

One thing that I've noticed is the giggle.   I've always had a bit of a 'bee in my bonnet' about the Pleo giggle - I've heard several forum members talk about their Pleo giggling when tickled on the feet, but whenever I've tried it on both Iggy and Budge I was never sure if what I was hearing was a giggle.  They were obviously enjoying it, but the best way I can describe the noise they make is a sort of "kerhitchipoo, kerhitchipoo, kerhitchipoo ......" (I've tried typing that about seven different ways and that seemed the best!).  I was always a bit uncertain as to whether or not that was actually a giggle.

Now I've got as-yet-unamed Pleo working I tried tickling his feet, and he giggled!  Not only did he definitely do a slightly wheezy, sustained "hee hee hee" along with the familiar "kerhitchipoo", but every now and then I heard a definite "ha ha" as well!  It was infectious, too!  :D :D

So I'm now wondering if the giggle will disappear if I upgrade him, because maybe only the earlier OS did that giggle, or if maybe this is just another example of the way individual Pleos can assert their personality by not using the whole of their available 'vocabulary'?

This is interesting. I bought Tooie second hand from eBay. She was running the original Ugobe operating system as she would sit but not move her front legs around. I now really wish I'd tried tickling her feet to see if I got a giggle, but the first thing I did was update her to OS1.1 %) I wonder if it still happens with OS1.1. I haven't tried! Or maybe not all Pleos are ticklish anyway :D I'm so glad you got your faulty Pleo working. Well done!!

Thanks Malfie!  Both Iggy and Budge were second hand, and both arrived already running 1.1 though I did upgrade Iggy to OS2.  This is the first chance I've had to see the earlier OS running.  I'll  try to film it.  Do try the tickling thing and let me know what happens, please!  ;D

I will Crewella! Tooie's battery is flat at the moment but I'll try probably tomorrow evening. I have Sylvester on OS2 and then Snooki the PleoRB, so it's kind of interesting to have three Pleos all on different operating systems :)

I never managed to get either of my rb's to giggle from feet tickling.  They just got angry about being on their backs. :(
I will have to try it with Gumble and see what he does.  Maybe I was just doing it wrong?  Has anyone else managed to get the giggle response from feet tickling in a rb?

I think I may have caught it with Baby, but not sure how good it is on tape as late at night, will have to go back and have a look, it is hard to film with camcorder in one hand an a pleo in the other and tickle, It may be the sound but not sure if you can see her or not, good question. I will let you know if I can find a video of it or not. I can't try it out as she is not here right now and my new one is not here either,,,,but I would like to find out now....this will drive me crazy till I either eliminate the dates I took last videos of her, and find out one way or another if I have it on tape.                             REdwoodsMama

Wow!  Thanks for all the responses!  ;D

I now have three Ugobe Pleos running, like Malfie I have each on a different OS, as well as poor skinned Scully who is still not functional, and of course Belle the RB.  I'll have a good go at filming them all being tickled, I've been trying to work out how to do that without octopus arms, but I think I might have found a set-up that will work.  :D

The adorable baby giggle disappears after up grading the program from os. I just checked to listen to all four pleos. Little Orphan Annie is the only one that has the original os. She giggles like a little baby with a variety of sounds. Definitely the cutest giggle! I would love to see that giggle in all of the pleos.

Well that was a very strange noise for a pleo to make.  A bit weird really.  Giggle noises would be so much cuter.

Wow that was... odd. It sounds a bit like someone spewing foamy toothpaste from their mouth in one explosive breath. If I didn't read this topic I would've thought they were spitting or blowing their nose rather than laughing. It's really a very interesting sound.

Yes! I've had nearly a whole evening of tickling :D And Tooie (OS1.1) and Sylvester (OS2) make the exact same noise as in your video! I actually found it rather disturbing. To me it sounds like they're saying "it-hurts-me it-hurts-me it-hurts-me" over and over again :( Definitely nothing like a giggle!

As for Snooki (RB) well, she fell asleep and started snoring!! %)

What a pity the cute little giggle has gone. Plus I didn't ever get to hear it! :'(

I don't think I'll do this, but if I were to downgrade Tooie back to her original OS1.0, would the giggle come back??? ??? (Presuming she had ticklish feet in the first place!)

You could just shadow the giggle sound file with a nicer giggle :)

I personally wouldn't know how to do that, but for those who are clever ;) maybe the "it-hurts-me..." sound could be replaced with a cute giggle!

Please help me isolate the sounds you mean. There are several 'tickle' skits.

Here are some of the older 'tickle' sounds that are in Pleo 1.02 (but not in 1.0, or in 1.1 or in PM2 or in PleoRB)
http://aibohack.com/pleo/old_tickle_sounds.zip

Please click on the .WAV files to hear the clip. Are these the sounds you remember?

The other versions only play the "Oww" sound ("1p1_tickle07.wav").

It doesn't sound like any of those as far as I can tell. My two are running 2.0 though if that makes a difference.

Finally I got there - I gave up trying to film it myself and roped poor OH into holding the camera.  Advice for budding directors out there:  don't use non-union camaramen, they don't do a good job and they just whinge about coffee breaks all the time!  ;)  :P

Moschops (now named, 'Chops' for short) is first, running the older OS 1 or 1.0.2 and giggling, then Budge running 1.1 followed by Iggy on OS2 who both reacted pretty much the same, and lastly Belle the RB, who looked a bit bemused by the whole thing, gave a couple of deep sighs and then looked at me 'mum, I don't know what you're trying to do, but can you stop now please' so I gave up.  :D
