Breaking News about the 2010 Pleo
« on: October 27, 2009, 02:34:45 PM »

Derek Dotson, one of the original founders of Ugobe and is now the COO of Innvo Labs and Innvo Labs speaks about the 2010 Pleo in an interview posted on robotsrule.com.
He says: "I can talk about the 2010 Pleo model. That model will look the same as Pleo does now except it will have a new paint job and eye color to differentiate it from the current Pleos. Over the coming year we intend to give Pleo more depth to his personality and utilize the sensors better. For example, Pleo doesn’t do a whole lot with the camera in his nose right now. It’s not the hardware since the camera is a good quality camera. However there’s a lot of room for improvement in the software. An example of a specific feature people want badly is getting Pleo to come to you. The 2010 model will do that. Also, Pleo uses power more efficiently which will lead to longer play times. To make Pleo more realistic, Pleo will develop certain character biases at birth so that everyone’s Pleo will be different. As for the sensors, the reason why they are currently underutilized is due to a bottleneck in the serial bus that connects them to Pleo’s processor resources. That’s something we can fix without drastically altering Pleo’s architecture. Once that happens, we can do more with them when it comes to Pleo’s hearing, vision, etc. Beyond 2010 there will certainly be new creatures other than baby robot dinosaurs."

This is fantastic stuff.
I hate to say it, but perhaps it's a good thing that Ugobe went down.
Pleo is now in the hands of a company that means serious business with Pleo and really wants to get the most out of Pleo. Making Pleo greater then anyone could have dreamed of!
When the super new model comes out, I will definitely be wanting one!  ;D

I want one too. I just hope that they don't raise the price. I agree that upgrade option would be great.

That's awesome to hear some news from Innvo Labs! I can't wait for the updated 2010 Pleo to come out. I love that he'll come when he's called, that he'll last longer and that he'll get "character biases" too!

I'm really, really hoping for the 2010 Pleo to be similar-priced, to today's Pleo. I'm an optimist. But I dunno.

Edit: An official got back to me, a little while ago, and said that "The price will remain the same". That's fantastic to hear!

I'll be scared to see them. I might like it better than the old one, and that would be like hating someone for having arthritis.

...man, I anthropomorphize hard. >.>;

Eh. Right. Anyway, it'll be interesting to see what they come up with. It does sound like they're highly dedicated to the project, and I hope it proves to b e a good investment for them and doesn't get cut like the Aibo. I find the idea of personal AI pets and units absolutely fascinating, and would love to see more in the future. I get the feeling that other companies are probably watching Pleo closely.

Exactly what I mean. Sony tried with the Aibo and decided it wasn't worth it. But, as many people have pointed out, Aibo was very much into doing the "I'm a robot, BEEP!" thing. Pleo is the start of the "realistic" AI systems. Wow Wee is the only robotics and/or toy company with a unit currently on the market, but there are plenty of others out there with the technology and ability. I just imagine they are watching to see if they can rake in money.

To Krillia: Yeah, of course. I know.

To Pleo Power: Eh, no, not really, not to me at least. Those mere toys are just for silly kids. Pleo is different. Pleos' can evolve over time, are autonomous and are emotional. Pleos' can be for adults. Kota and D Rex are extremely kid-loving and toy-like. Maybe those 2 companies might "step it up" for adults some day, in the distant future. But not right now.

from what I have seen Kota (and the other Dino's in that line) are more for kids then adults.  (But from what I have seen in reviews a lot of adults like them.)

but you judged D.Rex's without seeing one in realty, just from what you have seen online.  (as have several others.)
they might not "Evolve" but it seems like they can "grow" a bit. (he knows a bit more then when I first turned him on.)  they are autonomous, the controller is only for controlling there mood. (and for a snack. ;))  they have emotions, I have heard Rex and Roxanne saying they love eachother, a few times, and they can let you know when they are happy or angry or hungry or skared. (they emote with there expressions and with sound.)  and yes, they do like kids. (but that's better then hating them, isn't it?) and they get along with Pleos too. (they don't try to eat them.)

I can't wait to get one of these. :) They'll be so much fun! I've heard that they're really expensive...like $400 or something like that.

I do not own a Pleo yet, but I really wanted to purchase the 2009 one for my daughter for Christmas until I did a ton of research and found out that the 2010 ones may be coming out in January a month after Christmas. I find it strange that all the marketing for the Pleos is for the 2010 even though it's the 2009 Holiday Season. Bad marketing.  I'm very disappointed that if I buy a 2009 the 2010 will be out in a monthand a half and it will be very much improved. Does anyone know if you are able to purchase a 2010 now (I know sounds silly) or if the software will be upgradeable and how much of the hardware are they going to change to make it better? I don't really care about the new color they may have, but I would rather spend $400 on something that is newer. It is just a little disappointing with Christmas being so close. :-\

Hi

Is this 2010 pleo the same one as the 'new' pleo recently released on pleoworld.com? Or are they planning another refresh sometime during 2010?

I'd like to get one for my daughter's birthday (BTW is it suitable for a caring 6 year old?), and the current pleos are good prices online. But I'd wait and/or buy from pleoworld.com to get better battery life, and better use of the sensors.

All I've heard about the current 'new' one is the new paint job and a couple of other fixes.

PleoWorld is selling the "new" model, it's the '09 Pleo.  Sometime in 2010 (NOT January, it could be mid-year or even later....) they will release the '10 Pleos, whch will have even more improvements than the '09 has.  The '10 Pleo is supposed to have more memory and an enhanced OS that is NOT backwards compatible with the original or '09 Pleo.

Hi mrklawm I have a 6 yr old granddaughter who received her Pleo a year ago for Christmas.  She has been extremely careful with hers but honestly, she is just starting to show a bit more interest in her Princess Bella.  She needs to be reminded to be careful with laying her down to sleep and needs help putting on clothes.  All kids are different.  I think if played with under adult supervision, this is wonderful.  It just depends on what her expectations are from her Pleo.  I think my granddaughter thought her Pleo would follow her around and come when called and a variety of things that were far above her expectations.  She seems to be okay when I bring Angel and Dinomite around as they interact with Princess Bella.  She loves Bella but I can see where a few more years will make a difference.  My granddaughter loves all animals so I think it is a matter of what she expected from the Pleo.  She is doing better but mostly will only play with her when I bring my two to play.  Remember, it depends on the child.  I hope this helps in some way.

My Pleo's met my six year old 'brother' Jake this Christmas (ok so he isn't my brother really but he calls me his sister :)), and he was ever so gentle with them, it was just too precious to see him talking to them and petting them like they were real :D (He did understand that they were robots, he has a roboraptor at home.) He just loved to pick them up and nurse them on his chest and listen to them purr and coo as they fell asleep :) He also told me off for hanging Lilo upside down lol. His Grandma was also enchanted by them and told her hubby that she wants one for her birthday :D
