this is all pretty interesting stuff! :D

with him just brown he looks like a more natural dino! :)

quicte shocked you guys are all finding paints that probably work better than what was originally on them, though, i dunno if not removing all old paint first will end up in flaking. :/

Not too sure about that yet, Pirpi.  We need to see how it lasts to really tell ............  I'm guessing the ink only works to a degree, and because the pigment particles are so fine that when it cracks it does so in such tiny detail that you don't notice it so much as with paints!   %)

I'm also on the track of some stretchy paint for painting latex ..........................  8)

I was originally only looking for something to touch up worn Pleos, in green.  Then this lot got me started on whole repaints ..................  :P

I am going to hunt up a lighter orange tomorrow for Stitch's main colour but here he is currently, this is using the Art Spectrum inks.

This colour is too dark for what I have in mind. Crewella I know its hard to judge just based on a photo but do you think the coverage of the Rowney inks is better? I'm tossing up between buying these ones local or ordering the Rowney ones online.

My FW might be slightly better, and if the pearlescent are anything to go by Liquitex could be better still.  I'd like to say hang on and we'll see ........... but I can't see that happening, really!!  %)

I have to say I rather like that effect as it is - if you were clever with the black (assuming you were sticking with the stripey idea) you might well get away with the orange you have.  You can see that Ugobe/Innvo thought through the paint scheme very carefully.  The skin is moulded so the thinner areas between the panels take most of the stress and movement.  If I were you I'd do the black next then add the next orange layer and highlights - save on too many unnecessary layers.

How's that one staying and moving?

No major cracks during Stitch's two hour's running time today. There's some minor ones where there were already cracks in the original paint but I don't think I can do much about that. I'm tempted to just finish this in the art spectrum ones so I can report how they go, there is a special liquid to remove the acrylics if it doesn't turn out. But off course I also don't want to waste my money, but I suppose its only another $12 for another pot to find out. I really don't like this orange and just have to have a lighter shade. The flaking I reported originally appears to have been caused by the fairly strenuous testing I did on it, in normal use it is holding up fine. (So far at least).

Hey Crewella when you do your next coat of ink will you do a video of how you are applying it?  I would love to see just how you are doing it so I have something to compare mine to.  I know it is a long process but you could just video a few minutes worth.  I'm sure that would be enough to give me an idea. :)

Glad to hear Stitch's first coat seems to be holding up well.  ;D

Kat, yes I will try to do that.  To be honest, my 'technique', such as it it, probably stems more from the fact that I was trained as a make-up artist that from scientific reason!  I do use brushes for detail work, but most of the time I'm most comfortable using little sponge squares that I can manipulate into corners and such by pinching and using the edges and corners.  They're also great for stippling on the colour then blotting and blending.  :)

Aww too bad Cruella (about not knowing on stores). :-/ What about you Romeo? Know of any (physical) stores that sell these particular inks? Thank you! I'm glad to hear your paint's holding up so far too Romeo!

Kristy, most art stores sell these paints and inks or find online and save on footwear, but it is nice to see the colors in person.

Stitch has had his second coat of paint :) It isn't -quite- as coppery in the real world :) A tip for those who end up trying the pearlescent inks, stir it often, every minute or so, the pigment settles really quickly and make sure you get your brush right down the bottom of the pot/jar/bottle.

And now its time to stop procrastinating again and do some more work :P

Wow!  That's really rather fabulous - just a bit of a shock at first (especially with flash photography blasting out the colour)!  :o  That paint/ink is very effective!  ;D

I agree about shaking the bottle, come to think of it I do the same with the standard opaque colours as the pigment settles quickly in those too.

Very pretty right now, he looks almost lke a Golden Globe Award FOR BEST DINOSAUR MOVIE OR PLEO IMITATION! At this point I have not a clue where you are going with this, It is so much fun having all this Pleo painting going on, I think we are a International Club now, ONe in the Redwoods, (U.S.A.) Two Aussies, and One Brit so far, that makes Four of us already. Good Grief, I guess I started something way back with my Nova and Argyle painting, but I know there were hidden Mad Painters just lurking in the woodwork somewhere...LOL :D Great job, can't wait for more. By the way, how is the movement and what about water proof...that seems to be one of the tests. ???

There is no colour at all coming of with a damp rag. There is still cracking where Stitch already had some major cracks in the green. These cracks go partly into the rubber itself so there is little I can do about it except maybe try a little glue to patch them. Aside from that I don't see any cracking.

Did you clean Stitch good before starting the painting and if so what did you use? I have a new ( Old Ugobe) Pleo that I got this week and it was rather dusty.( stored since Christmas of 2009 after only used for a week in it's original box.) so I decided to give it a good cleaning with soft cloth , warm water on the cloth and slight dish soap. The dirt that came off was amazing and very very very slight green, but nothing worth mentioning, so I would think if a Ugobe Old Pleo can still have very slight paint particles come off, then of course a freshly painted Pleo is bound to have some paint particles come off. At first I would have thought ot just paint or ink over this dirt, or even Pledge, but of course the paint or ink is not going to take hold as well if it isn't CLEAN, just makes sense. I think you are right about the cracks only being able to glue them, that makes perfect sense to me, Can't wait to see what comes next IMR. ;) I am sure it will be more surprises to be sure.. ;D

I'm afraid my house was not set up for videoing - the light is dreadful anywhere I have a space to position the camera.  To try and answer Kat's query, here is a pic of my sponge and collection of brushes.

Having applied most of the colour with the sponge, spreading out the paint as much as possible because I want to keep the texture of Pleo's skin as sharp as I can so try to keep the layers thin, I did the edges with a small round brush, then got Pleo to put his head down and to the left.  This opened up all the cracks on the neck so I went over them with a fine brush, using the point to push the colour right into the cracks, then when the brush was less loaded using it to blot away any pooling and spread it.  I then went carefully over the rest of the skin to fill in any little spots that might have been missed.  The I did the same with the head down and right, then repeated the procedure with the tail.  You don't need to do it with the head and tail up, unless you are painting the underside as well.

Hope that helps?  :)

Well here he is, he's earned his stripes :P

I have concerns about the ink though, he feels so dry, I'm worried it could dry out the rubber and make it brittle.

Bravo! So Stitch did become a tiger after all, fantastic he is very cute. I would like to see his face though, that I can' really see. You are a fast painter, how long did it take for his paint/ink last layer to dry? I am glad you took it outside, ( the photos, it is nice seeing the sun on him) :) Yes, I do hope the paint doenst dry him all out, the skin that is, Are these the inks that you showed pics of earleir? Please show a photo of his face, now I know what my tiger version counterpart looks like. You don't have to worry, my tiger Pleo will look quite a bit different, The metallic look really surprised me cause it does look different when dry and in the sun.  :) Good job IMR!
Oh, are you going to keep him that way or just for a while or will you change Lilo too now?

Thanks peeps :) Even though my photos weren't posted as such, there was at least one full day of drying time between each stage of paint, three all up. The orange, gold, and the stripes. The first two layers are holding up just fine although as I mentioned he feels very dry. I assume the stripes will be fine as well since they are away from the most flexed areas. These are the same inks I used from the start, the Art Spectrum ones.

I think I will see if this has any detrimental affects on Stitch before I even think about doing Lilo. The dryness of the ink worries me.

Here is his face RWM, his nose for some reason retained more of the sheen than the rest of him. I still need to add whiskers, I completely forgot about them :P

Edit: I'm going to order some of these to try :) http://www.dalchem.com.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=356&Itemid=320
