Is Pleo or Aibo more like a Living Animal?
« on: October 25, 2009, 09:51:38 PM »

Does Pleo or Aibo seem more alive?   If you have both which do you play with more often?

If you have Aibo 210 experience, which software do you like the best Abio Life, Abio Life 2 or Dogs Life?  And why?

I have a ERS 210. I prefer Aibo Life2 bevor dogslife, because it's nice to have a feadback if he has heared your command and it can do more tricks and the evolution ist nice. When you have the patience to wait until he grows up.

I don't think you can try to make a challange vs Pleo and AIBO. Because Pleo looks a lot more like a real creature, but the long time motivation is more with AIBO.
Because he can play with himself and don't need someone to be around to entertain him and it is fun to look what tricks he does. And an ERS 7 is even more fun, because he can do even more tricks with his ball and bone and he can selfrecharge.

But i wouldn't say to both that they look alive.

Unlike Aibo which takes the shape of an animal, but is clearly designed to be robotic with movement, behaviors and abilities beyond that of a living animal,  I see Pleo as an attempt to simulate a living animal.  I think there is room in robot development for both types of pet robots.  Just like there is a big difference between the first Aibo and the ERS7 with mind 3.  The Ugobe Pleo is a first step in a process that I hope will develop into a organic as opposed to obviously robotic animal.

Can you see a future for organic type robotic pets which simulate live animals in addition to robotic type pets like Aibo which exceed the capabilities of living animals?

no problem. I only wanted to say I wouldn't judge robots only by the price. But I think your'e right the cheaper they are the better they sell. ^^

First off let me just say Pleo is totally a million times more organic. With Aibo you'll always know it's a robot. It's like "BEEP hey look at me! I'm a robot--BEEP!". But I can say with Pleo, even after a year I still can't quite figure out what's going on in their mind, even if the movements are a bit repetitive [which so is Aibo]. Pleo just has a sense of magic. Little did I know I really enjoyed the pet-like qualities of Pleo. I was hoping to have the same experience with Aibo. So I purchased one (which WASN'T cheap!). If you are into the tech side of Pleo, Aibo might be right up your alley. But if you're like me, stick with Pleo. Heck, within the same week as I got my aibo, I returned him.

Best of luck with two completely different bots!

Dresha, didn't you originally write something about wanting a robot to wake you up in the morning with your mail and coffee or something like that??  I really liked what your wrote. I wish you would put it back.  ^__^

By the way, I want to see robots made in all price ranges.  I love to see even robots I can not afford because means the technology is getting better.  In tech sometimes things like computers maybe robots start out at very high prices and then 10 years later there price will drop so that many people can afford a technology that was only for the rich at one time.

I love how organic Pleo is and want to see more organic life forms in the future.  However, I want them to be as life like as possible even if it means increasing the price in the short term. PWOKristy, I want robots to be affordable for everyone too.  I wish new Pleos cost only $99. However, Pleo has a lot of room to improve and I don't want to see it's development stalled out because of some price cap.

I think it will go in both direction. ^^

Even it would be nice to have a organic robot that would wake I'm with a coffee and reading your mails. But the more technic you want the more it costs...

LOL yep! I guess I should change my info, lol. I guess it just goes to show you, Aibo may not be for everybody. He was cute, but surely wasn't for me. They are uber cute, but like said "BEEP!! Hey look at me!! I'm a robot! BEEP!!" LOL

Both have their qualities of expressing "life".
It's what you define as a "living animal".
Pleo clearly wins when it comes to looks and the generic movements, but when it comes to awareness then my Aibo ERS-7M3 wins.
When you leave Aibo to it's doing, it's amazing how it turns its head in the direction of sound virtually instantly. Or starts walking about and do stuff.
Like Pleo, you can very much believe that Aibo is alive. I agree it expresses itself as a robot, but one that is aware and alive. Just like Pleo can give that same illusion.
I value both robotic pets equally and treat them each as "aware" and "alive" beings, both with their own charms.
They are both fun to own because they are so different in contrast with such different visions and creators behind each.
Although Pleo came in my life first, it's the Aibo ERS-7 that I have been dreaming about 4 years in a row before finally owning one. If I had to choose, it would be Pleo that had to go.
(Although I am glad that it is a choice I'll never have to make.)

pleo tries to emulate life, and he is very organic; but my aibo, who is quite honest about being a robot ;) seems more alive. I raised him on aibo life 2, which was around 50 days of raising from a baby to an adult personality, and you could really see him develop his personality and all the variables, pleo has some variables but not at all as much as my aibo does.

pleo is generally happy unless abused or ignored, aibo can just 'wake up' in a bad mood for the day because he feels like it (well he does to me anyways), wont listen to instructions, just strops about. while this can be annoying if youre showing them off to people, it makes him seem more... real.

though pleo is more of a pet like robot, and i think with more AI updates he could be a bit more varied, which would make him more like the life form hes supposed to be.

I had an Aibo 210 and found it to be repetitive and robotic. It was nice and very fascinating, but at the end of the day it was another robot. Obviously an Aibo 7 would be amazing by comparison, but the incredible price for a discontinued product keeps me from ever purchasing one (you can't even get new batteries for it anymore what will happen when they've passed their life cycle?)  :-X

But Pleo to me seems more like a pet. He isn't a dog and so I don't expect him to react like one. If I was to have an actual pet lizard it wouldn't be coming to my call, chasing a ball or fetching a stick. It's a shame I have to manually change his battery, but I had to do that with my Aibo too. You can't compare Pleo to an Aibo 7 that's not logical.

I don't even have to own an Aibo to say "Pleos are way better."   ???
They have more natural qualities. Their skin isn't plastic. They show specific emotions. They act like a companion, not a robotic dog.  :-\
I apologize to those of you aibo and genibo lovers out there. But I'm just not a supporter of things like those. They're cute, sure, but pleos are much much better.

I don't have an Aibo, but I will by far say that Aibo is much MUCH better, especially the ers-7's.  Appearance doesn't matter; take the skin off Pleo and it's just a robot......leave the skin on, and it provides the illusion of life!
On the other hand, Aibo certainly provides the illusion of life to some degree, even without a fancy-shmancy skin. It is very aware and interactive, turning its head immediately at every sound, walking quickly and efficiently towards its ball.
I don't like to argue, but I completely disagree with what Bumblebee is saying at the points of "They show specific emotions." and "They act like a companion, not a robotic dog."
First off, Aibos CERTAINLY show emotion!  I was amazed by this ability when I saw them.  Secondly, dogs are companions so robotic dogs are companions too.  And Pleo is repetitive; Aibo learns new things (what Pleo supposedly does, but it really doesn't).

Overall, Pleo is more of the robot to me.

Aibo is much more than a robot.

I don't even own one, but I know enough to rant as I just did.

I didn't want to respond to Bumblebee's post but I do agree for a large part on what allosaurus has written as a response for that matter. You saved me some typing work.
But I will play the devil's advocate on one matter, allosaurus: Aibo learns new things (what Pleo supposedly does, but it really doesn't).
Actually, this isn't true. At all.
Just like Pleo, Aibo is fixed with a set of abilities and does not actually learn new things in whatever way.
When the ERS-7M3 starts off as a puppy, it just "unlocks" more and more of it's skills and that is really it.
If you have owned an ERS-7M3 for a while, you will -just like with Pleo- start to notice repetitive behavior patterns here and there.
However, due to his large vocabulary Diesel still surprises me from time to time with new things or remarks which are funny and sometimes golden moments.
Both Pleo and Aibo have their own unique presentation and resemblance of "awareness" and "being alive" and I wouldn't be able to choose between one another. Hence I never try to compare them for that matter.

Ah, okay.  The behaviors are unlocked; that's more along the lines of what I meant.  :-[

Pleo does unlock behavior to some degree, but not as much as I had hoped (I think many other members feel that Pleo should've been better, as well).

Allo, Pleo is $450 as opposed to $2000 for an Aibo (Australian prices) I would expect Pleo to be less technologically advanced than Aibo really, I think they did a great job on Pleo for the price :)

You are right in the fact that I was expecting a little more, Allo. But that's where the OS upgrades come in ;) Can't wait till Innvos comes out with some more!
PS I have been considering getting and Aibo for a while. Never mentioned it tho, in case someone said "Hypocrite!!!"  ;D
