I´m really loving the makeovers!
Oh and the Python! WOW!
The Tiger makes me wanna paint mine like a zebra and then have them meet :) Would be nice to make a giraff and a lion as well with a huge furry ring around the neck :) Or a Rhino, oooo the possibilities!

I do thing the lavender one should get another try, it started out looking great!

Only a few days left for my birthday, and I am looking into a new member, an RB one :)
I would love to see more makeover pics!

Hi RWM.  Do you have any photos of Lavender girl before you removed the latex paints that you could show us what you mean.  I think it is important to show pics if you can so we can all get a good idea of what works and what doesn't.  I would love to see.
I plan on doing 2 coats on Gumble as long as they cover well.  One of the orange as his main color and one of a lighter creamy yellowish color for his highlights.  The highlights coat will just be stippled on over the top (I hope) in the spots where it is needed.
Do you feel the latex paints would look ok with only a couple of coats?
I would love to see some pics of before you cleaned her off.  And how did the latex feel compared to the inks and paints you have used in the past.  Did it feel very dry or was it more like the original pleo skin feel?  (not sure if I asked this before or not so sorry if I did :) )
Thanks for all the info.  I think the more we share the sooner we will find the perfect paint to use. :)

My latex paints have just arrived, but it's a sale week at work and I'm not gong to get a chance to try them until the weekend ........ grrr!  Tempted as I am,  I didn't get home until midnight and I'm back there in the morning - if I did try it would be so rushed as to not be worthwhile.  I'll just have to bite the bullet and wait.  >:(

Just a note on the Python:  I do think choosing a dark background helped the ink to hold, as I only needed a single coat to cover the green reasonably well.  I'm expecting, and can already see, the yellow layer cracking on the neck as I had to apply it more thickly than I did the browns to make the colour stand out.  ^-^

I'll try to work that out at the weekend as well.

Sorry to hear the lavender project has hit problems - keep trying!  :hhug:

I am loving the makeovers! I have to admit that I have lost track of who was painting what and what paints worked and what didn't.  In all of my confusion, I will ask a few questions and make a few comments.

Kat, I loved the orange Gumble! Will he be orange again sometime, or have you given up?  He did look awesome!

RWM, I loved the way the lavender pleo started out. Some don't like the red I see, but I did like the contrast between the two colors. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Crewella, all I can say about the python pleo is WOW! That is awesome!  He doesn't eat small plastic rodents, does he?   :o

ok guys I think if you read the other posts before this  earlier today and I described all the problems, pitfalls etc of using latex based paints and problems relating to texture, I shouldnt have to repeat myself, Several wanted to know if I could post photos to help explain the problems in more detail, It is hard to do, because I got upset over the way this went and then I totally took all the paint off, and was embarrased to have someone look at it, artists can get upset and tempermental over little things, but for the good of the Pleos and those that love them and for those that are trying to paint them, , I thought I would do it anyway. I think a picture explains where I am going a lot more than words ever can. Crewella, you asked about how the paints felt, well I think they felt a lot like the Pleo Rb skin, but not quite as smooth because of the bumpiness but not the same as the inks over bumpy skin, I was using matte paint pretty much and it didn't have that shiny look the inks did, which was more realistic and what I was going for, The latex paint is very thick and not watery at all, nothing like the inks. I was using sponge for the first coat and also for the second colors, with only a tiny brush for around lips and eyes and to touch up, the paint dries very very fast even to the touch, like in less than 30 minutes, I did let the first lavender coat "cure" for a full 24 hrs before I tryed anymore coats, I do think one coat would work, as I had a lavender color and it only took one coat to cover all the green ,just going back to get any spots I missed, little areas. ( the inks took more than one coat to get full coverage, mostly two in most spots, some spots grabbed the color faster with inks..but I loved the texture showing through with inks..) If you wanted a Plain Generic Pleo with just one basic coat color and perhaps doing the lines like you did with Python Pleo, then MAYBE, Perhaps it woud work, but trying to add more color on top or shading with latex paint is very very tough cause it justs sits on top of the first layer. If you look at the face you can see what I mean compared to the face of Inked Pleos, and I used very little color paint on this area, the reddish was the least that showed any problem, but around the cheeks etc, I could see the problem with texture not beng what I wanted it to be. It looked oK, but it was not what I WANTED IT TO BE... :(I just did not feel comfortable and kept looking for another solution and even when I got a look or pattern I thought I liked, but wasn't sure anyone in the Mainstream would like, I still did not like the Texture, that was the deal killer for me, If it can't look like Reptile or Dinosaur Skin, then it can't be looking like what I would think a Pleo looks like. Just like painting a Bird, but with flatness and not looking like it has feathers, do you know what I am trying to say, I think Crewella can understand having a background in makeup, she should get it. I was just getting ready to buy more latex paints and luckiky stopped in teh nick of time, already having spent over $50.00 on supplies, it is time to rethink my plan, I have the paints and inks, just need a break. I still do like the lavendar idea, but kow when to stop, yu have to have the inspiration to go on. I know I can do better than this, and that is what stopped me before making things worse. Also this is a Pleo with great skin and no wear hardly at all, It was nice to see how much scrubbing with soap and water could remove the paint and not damage the Pleos skin. Hope this helped answer any questions. Another Avatar Pleo will surface soon, just need a mental break. :)       RWM AKA " The Mad Pleo Painter of the Redwoods'  Guess the title fits.. :o

I do understand RWM, I thought the paint layers looked thicker on the lavender Pleo than on previous projects, but wasn't entirely sure if it was just the effects from the flash.  I've just opened my latex paints and wow - they ARE thick!!  :o  :-\  :hhug:

It says they're water based (on mine anyway) ........... so what happens if you just add more water ,,,,,,,,? Hmmmmmm .... I'll give it a try at the weekend.  >:D  ;)

I am still waiting on my latex paints so will let you know what they are like when they arrive.  I will probably wait till the weekend before starting Gumble again too.

Thanks for posting the pics RWM. I really do think it will be helpful for all of us if we post our failures as well as successes.  That way we can all learn from each others mistakes.  And it will mean less heartache and time wasted by all. :)

I will be making sure to do as little coats as possible with the latex paints on Gumble to try to avoid the thick look.  And I will do my best to apply it as thinly as possible. :)  I still think this may well be the right type of paint for Gumble but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Crewella, the LiquidTex paints are all water based as well, I am not sure what brand you are using, but Latex Paints are allways a lot thicker than Inks, that is for sure. I think it is a lot of experimenting to do to see what is right, The only ones I am complelty happy with are the Oil based paints I used on Nova, Argyle which are over three months old now, but I did touch ups and not full bodys, but I may experiment, as I just got a $80.00 Pleo, complete and haven't even opened it yet, If it needs touch ups, then I will probably use him, her.
Kat, good luck, I would love to see Gumble with a fresh coat.  :)I guess we are all learning here bit by bit. LOL........ :o %)

To me, I don't think buying these paints and inks is "expensive". $11 is okay. I'm looking forward to more work from you guys (that I like)! And can compliment the ones that I like.

Ok Kristy, this is not flamboyant and you may not like this particular one, but here is another one to look at. This is my newest Pleo, ( Not New New, but sick New abused and needing help  :() I unpacked this one two days ago and just perked him up some today, As you can see from the first three photos, he has a lot of "love petting" spots on his head and body back where his paint was rubbed off from constant petting, This pleo sat in a closet for more than a year and was bought for some kids in 2009. This little guy was sick when I first turned him on, and I will upload that video later today under the Life in the Redwoods post topic. As you can see from these photos I did not stray a lot from  his original coloring, but brightened him up a little and also added just a touch of color to give him or her more personality. ( the blue around eyes and on his body area.)

oh, and one more for Indoor view of paint

See if anyone can guess what type of paints etc I used for this Pleo? ;) Please leave comments. I still need just a few minor touchups, otherwise he or she is done, no more color being added that you do not already see.                           RedwoodsMama     AKA " the Mad Pleo Painter of the Redwoods" ;)

I'm gonna guess that you used chalk paints, from the color and they way it looks on the skin... It looks really pretty either way, I think the blue is my new favorite, I like that you only changed the color of the highlights, not the whole pleo. (lol i just tried to type pleo and I typed plee)

Update: Oh my gosh! I forgot about the "avatar" pleo, it looks great, I never did see avatar though...
And I didn't see the lavender pleo either! It's really pretty too! How many pleos do you have redwoods? And what are the''re names/colors? I'd love to see a list!

AND: Tiger stitch looks great IMR! I LOVE the tiger pattern!

Lucky Pleo, that was a good guess with Chalk Paints, but not correct! ;DI do like Chalk paints but they are not permanent and these are. They dry very very quickly. I am glad you like the colors, I too like the blue, it gives this Pleo some UUMPH! I am glad you liked the Avatar and Lavendar Pleo, I took them apart, removed all the color and am going to redo them using this paint type, I think this is the one that is easiest to work with for me anyway. As for a list of all my Pleos, my gosh that is going to take some doing, I will see if I can do it this weekend, trying to get a photo essay of all of them in one sitting. The colors, that will be fun to list too.LOL. I think you are the first person that ever asked me for a list, lOl, that is nice of you. this guy will be one that will be up for adoption at some point, First I have to get himi healthy and he is on his way by getting a new makeover and over his or her cold.
Talon, hi, thanks for the compliment of rescuing the Pleo, he looked so pitiful just sitting there, Then when I turned him on, it was coughing, gagging and moan and groan. I haven't even introduced hiim to the other Pleos yet, but we will have a party for  his or her resue and "comming out party" He is a lot prettier I think now then with all the love spots worn all over him.

Always pleased to hear about Pleos being rescued and getting a new lease of life!  ;D

Although I'm not a big fan of bright colours usually, I really like the bright blue you've used here, RWM.  I think it looks really pretty with the strong Pleo green, and it really makes Pleo's blue eyes zing!  Of your 'retouches' this is my favourite so far. Nice lines and definition, too.  :D

Have you given latex paint another try here?  Or maybe a mixture with latex paint?  :-\

Crewella, glad you liked this latest Pleo rescue paint touch up, Good guess with latex paints or a mixture, but that is not it either! Anymore guesses as to what it could be< HMMMM? %)

Kristy, thanks for looking and I am glad you approve of this one also, I do like the blue, it seems to fit very well. :)
Anyone else have a clue as to what type of medium I used for color on this Pleo that has been revived?

Bingo Kat, You got the correct Guess, good ole Oil paints work the best from the three I have tried, Oil paints, Inks and or Acrylic paints, Oil paints are quick drying, water resistant , non fading and move great and easy to apply. HOw do you like this Pleo looks , I don't remember any comments on how he looks, or she looks, do you think it looks ok? How is Gumble comming along?

Sorry guys,
I have had major internet issues this weekend and only just got it working a few minutes ago.  (It is a bit like loosing a limb when the internet connection goes down!) I sent my last post via my iphone but I have really bad reception on it here so could only do a very short post before it dropped out. :)
RWM I think the little blue pleo looks great. ;D  I like the way you have just touched up her/his love spots and added some extr highlighting.  The color is nice too. :)  Goes beautifully with the eyes. :)
What brand of oil paints are you using on your pleos?  Do all oil paints work the same or are you using a particular brand that works better than others?  And how do the oil paints feel to touch?  are they very dry like the ink seems to be?  Also what do you use to remove them if you make a mistake?  Are they hard to get off?  How do they go on the neck and tail areas?  Have you done any pleos with cracking to the neck or tail skin and painted over that and how did it go?  So many questions..... :)
As for painting Gumble, I am still waiting for my paints to arrive so no painting this weekend  :(.  Hopefully they will get here soon but until then he remains green and we wait. :)

Crewella, have you had a chance to try out your latex paints yet?  I would love to know how it is going?
Sorry to see little brown job's paint is cracking in the neck joints.  will you remove the yellow from here before doing it again or just paint over it?
Let us know how it goes.
Very cute with the mouse.  He looks like a real python now! ;D

Sorry you've been having internet problems, Kat, I know how frustrating they can be!  >:(

As my Latex Stretchi Paint has arrived, I'm planning to redo the yellow stripes with that.  It seems that a thin layer of acrylic ink will survive the movement, but a thicker application just can't cope with the most stressed areas.  The latex might be ideal for such areas though, even though it might be too thick for all-over application.  I'll keep you posted!  :D
