Watchdog mode
« on: January 31, 2009, 08:52:00 PM »

I have tried over and over and over again to get my pleos into watchdog mode, but it never works! Does anyone know how to do it?  ???
I feel kind of stupid for asking... :-[

Don't feel stupid. It's only because I have a sd card that I can do it.

I have finally mastered the technique of getting Bailey in watchdog mode by touching his sensors.
The thing is, that he doesn't really do anything once he has "counted" to four and gotten himself into position. He doesn't start to bark even if I wave my hands in front of him or step in front of him. The same thing happened with my previous Pleo. I haven't tried putting him in watchdog mode by inserting an SD card. Do you think that would make a difference?

You could try wearing a black and white striped top with black trousers and a mask carrying a sack printed with SWAG then comically tip-toe past pleo. heh.

programatically, there are three different version of the watchdog mode.  In LifeOS1.0.2, pleo is pretty much as you described.  Just sits there.  In LifeOS1.1, pleo should respond to sounds, visual movement (if the room is very well lit.  Remember, pleos are blind as a wombat. ;) ) and touching, but isn't really "playing the game".   You need to use the SD card version to "play" the game.

The SD card version is most like the LifeOS1.1 version, but not identical.  It was first developed as the SD card game before being modified and put in the OS.

Wombats, being semi nocturnal, actually have quite reasonable vision :)

Um yes and no, sure they are adorable when they are that big (that's only a wee baby) but common wombats can grow to be almost a meter tall at the shoulder and it is like having a pet bulldozer. They have absolutely no regards for fences, gardens etc give them time and they can dig through concrete :o

Here is Dozer from Australia zoo, he is a smaller hairy nosed wombat but he's still pretty big. (Wild wombats would claw and bite if you got that close)

And here is one just a couple of weeks old.

In the zoo they do have to have their nails clipped :) But in the wild they are worn down naturally as they dig for food (they like roots) their teeth are similar to a rodents and grow constantly, in the wild they are worn down by the food they eat but sometimes in captivity it is necessary for them to visit the dentist :)

I love wombats but sadly they often fall victims to trucks on the roads at night, sometimes tourist stop to take pictures of them. (eww)

Once where I used to live we came across some American tourists who had stop to take a picture of a big one that had died, they were all panicky because they thought we were going to arrest them for killing a native animal, my dad totally played up to the act and told them that they'd better be careful because the mother might be still around and she could be two meters tall....... Never seen tourist take off so fast :D

So somewhere in America is a couple of tourist who have a mortal fear of cow sized wombats :P

Gee!  13 posts about wombats in a thread titled "Watchdog mode."  :D  The surprise isn't that we're talking about wombats instead of the watchdog mode, it's that we've managed to stay on one topic for 13 posts!!  Wow!  And all from an off-handed mis-comment . . . :P

But they are cute fellas.  Big or small.  maybe for Ugobe's next life form, they'll release a pocket-sized robotic wombat!  ;) ;)

I would buy one in a heartbeat :D They would be ideal for a robot, plenty of room for everything inside, not much in the way of extremities and a novelty for most of the world :)

Not you're bad.  I'm the one who brought up wombats.  You just corrected my error. ;)

And anybody who's been around these forums for more than a few days has probably realized that everybody talking about wombats is perfectly normal . . .   for us, anyways! :P
