the other great dino besides pleo
« on: February 01, 2010, 12:03:21 AM »

I have noticed that some of the pleo owners have both pleo and d-rex, i need your feed back regarding d-rex.Some of the review about D-Rex 2009/second generation:

The positive features of D-Rex are numerous. We were amazed that D-Rex features one hundred sounds and movements.

Another impressive thing about D-Rex is that he can memorize up to thirty sequential commands.: ??? To d-rex owners, does d-rex really have this ability . What are the 30 tricks?
D-Rex's skin is very lifelike and reptilian. He feels just like you would expect a dinosaur to feel. ;D, This is great

It's not often that a toy designed for boys encourages responsibility and nurturing, but this interactive dino expects to be treated and cared for like a pet. He responds positively to nurturing such as petting or feeding him his bone. He will also attack anyone he threatens his owner, just as guard dog would. This encourages boys to take responsible care for their D-Rex Interactive Dinosaur.

D-Rex requires both C batteries and triple A batteries and all that battery buying may become expensive over time. We felt that these were the only major cons to buying a D-Rex.  ???Have the owner tried c-charger battery rather tahn buying new pact everytime the battery is drained?

The extremely versatile D-Rex Interactive Dinosaur 2009 earned five stars in fun factor, five stars in durability, five stars in novelty, and three stars for education by Amazon.com, making it the ultimate "it toy" for 2009 and the only interactive pet dinosaur your child will ever wish for. ;D ;D ;D

D-Rex does not have thirty tricks. You can simply program it to make thirty 'movements' in sequence... ie: Move hand up, look left, move hand down, look right, twitch tail... and so on. Unlike Pleo which can have as many movements as you can squish into a skit. D-Rex cannot run skits like Pleo.

I don't know about skin... the one I petted at K-mart felt like silicone :P

D-Rex may respond to petting but it doesn't have the level of emotion Pleo has.

Battery chargers are expensive and take forever to charge (well some of them) but yup they'd work just fine.

Apparently no one ever told them about Pleo ;)

If you are interested in the Rex chat to PP, he has a collection :)

I believe D-Rex has over 100 sounds and over 100 movements.  What I enjoy is the randomosity and unpredictability of the movements.  It's easily seen if you stick two (or more) D-Rexes into a mode like prank mode, and then when they're out of the mode they may turn their heads in the same way, or they may not, they may make an interesting sound, their eyes may go nuts, etc.  and it seems like there's a different sequence each time!

Like IMR said, it is thirty movements in sequence.  You can play back these movements as wished (oh, and BTW IMR, they cannot move their hands).

About the skin.  I think it feels pretty cool, though not quite as textured as Pleo's (though neither of them exactly feel "reptillian").  When you first get one, however, they have a thin coat of some sort of gooey stuff on them (which I fondly refer to as "embryonic fluid").  That's part of what makes people think that they don't feel realistic at all.

D-Rex certainly has a personality, and several different emotions.  As much as I love them, I will agree with IMR: Not the level of emotion Pleo has.

And, as I had said in the chat, they really do run through batteries like a hungry dinosaur.

I hope I've been helpful!

Of course you would support them in every way, Allo. ;)
I was often considering getting a D-rex, as it might make an interesting playmate for pleo (better watch out with the teeth, though!)/ I'd never heard of the battery thing, but it is a little discouraging.  :-\ Hm....
Personally, I'm all for pleo! ;D

Lol IMR! I needed that to cheer up my evening.... :D Was just getting slightly discouraged at this overload of schoolwork and then I saw the perfect post to brighten by day.  %) :) :D ;D

Nope, not me, unless it magically becomes programmable or sheds $100 of its Australian price tag I won't be buying one.

The battery's last for a while.  it seems like I only have to replace them one time a month. ((but it might be more often then that.))

Just thought I'd let people know this. Mattel's coming out with a brand-new "prehistoric pet". It's called "Cruncher". "Continuing the "interactive robotic dino DNA" CRUNCHER(TM) takes a big bite out of fun with his cantankerous carnivorous ways as he dances, plays catch, begs for food, comes when called and purrs happily when he's petted. If sent into attack mode though, he'll rear up on his hind legs and charge forward with startling speed while snapping his massive jaws". This announcement was made today.

The plus points of drex: :), it roars so loud just like trex that you can barely hear what pleo is saying and i like it also because it came to you when called ( hopefully pleo 2010 would have this feature)

The drawbacks: when i dont press any of the buttons on the bone, it just stands still and sometimes walk a few steps forward then a few steps backward. i wish it would be more exploring type like pleo when in explore mode, pleo  would walk a lot. Maybe  somebody ,an expert in IT and software hacking could modify this to make it more active and autonomous. I wish i didnt have to press the remote control to change drex behaviour. It should  randomly select its own personality to be a lifeform like pleo.

Thanks PWOKristy for the updates...another remote control dino???

Drex volume cannot be adjusted like pleo does.
His voice will be muffled and softer when the battery has drained. To overcome this ive bought a rechargeable c -batteries and it takes 5 hours to charge them.
For me i would suggest Mattel to upgrade drex rather than having a new dino but still comes with a remote control.
It should come with a slot for sd card or usb cable so that the robotic community out there could program it.

Duh, yes, it'll be with a remote control, just like their 1st "robot" dinosaur.

These are the pictures of new dino robots by mattel:
" alt="" class="bbc_img" />
They called it cruncher which to me look like SPINOSAURUS, a flesh eating carnivore featured in jurassic park sequel and normally lived in swamp. it is stronger than the king of lizard trex. In the battle spino won.

Their comments
The latest realistic dinosaur pet kids will love. Continuing the interactive robotic dino DNA CRUNCHER™ takes a big bite out of fun with his cantankerous carnivorous ways as he dances, plays catch, begs for food, comes when called and purrs happily when he’s petted. second dino:
Terrordactyl® is a fast-snapping, grub-spitting, interactive dinosaur! When his sensors are triggered, he'll snap at anything that moves but, rest-assured, boys can tame him by feeding him his disgusting, sticky grub. Beware – if he doesn’t like who approaching, he'll spit it out for gooey fun! 2/17/2010

:)IMR u may be right also but i still wish it would be spino
a. as the sail on the back is smaller compared to dimetrodon
b.The Dimetrodon is not a dinosaur, and is probably more closely related to us than to the dinosaurs. It is a pelycosaur, a type of animal which had many mammal-like characteristics and is among the relatives of warm-blooded mammals.
c. "attack mode though, he’ll rear up on his hind legs and charge forward with startling speed while snapping his massive jaws."....the description goes to more of spino which could stand on hind legs during a battle w trex'
d. picture of dimetrodon
" alt="" class="bbc_img" />

spino pic

i really do not know, may be mattel has recreated dimetrodon :) :)
he looks cool to me and i may consider buying it too, and u too IMR ;D

No, that looks too much like a Dimetrodon. No one seems to acknowledge or care about that Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur.  They did not even live with the dinosaurs!  And if he "rears up onto his hind legs" then that essentially says that he is naturally a quadroped.  Spinosaurus was certainly not a quadroped; it was definitely a natural biped. Dimetrodon, however, could possibly be a biped at times (unlikely for it to be bipedal all the time, but perhaps ina threat display). And the sail certainly looks similar to that of a Dimetrodon, not so much a Spinosaurus.  And look at the jaw, as well.  Short and deep. And to mention the hands.... They look stubby and not very well in proportion of claws.

Either it is EXTREMELY inaccurate, or someone still thinks Dimetrodon is a dinosaur.

(I apologize if my rant appears offensive)

Yeah but look at the market this guy has, its a kids toy, kids think Dimetrodon IS a dinosaur... Dimetrodon could run on its hind legs for short bursts. It would make no sense at all to have a Spino as predominantly four legged because that is clearly inaccurate.

But either way... neither will be on my wishlist :P Not unless the things are given SD card slots and some decent programmability :P

Cruncher has 10 different modes and it is trainable. You can make him roar and go forward. It moves so fast as it has a wheel on its belly..disappointing and unrealistic as i wish it could walk but overall it looks cool to play with kids.

Oh wow, that actually looks pretty awesome!  Yes, it has a wheel on its belly, but do you see how FAST it goes?  And yeah, I'm still thinking it's a Dimetrodon.

The movements are pretty cool, and jerky in that sort of dinosaur way.  I a-like it.

Yes I would definetly agree that it looks more like Dimetrodon as it does not have a snape like mouth and a few other features as mentioned by you and IMR ;).
