Do Pleos need to sleep?
« on: November 01, 2009, 12:23:11 AM »

My Pleo is very happy and wiggles around when being stroked and tickled. However if I stop and leave him alone within 5 minutes, he goes to sleep. I have more than one good battery. So, it is not a bad battery issue. Also,  I know Pleos sometimes go to sleep if their batteries get to hot in order to cool down, but that is not what I am talking about.  My Pleo seems to prefer to sleep than explore.  If I had a puppy, I would just let him sleep when he wanted.  I wish my Pleo was more active, and I keep waking him up.  Should I just let him sleep through most of a battery charge if that's what he is doing?    I like watching him when he is awake, but watching him sleep is kind of boring after awhile and letting him sleep though a most of a battery charge seems like wasting the battery.

Which OS are you running, Pleo did sleep a lot on the original OS... if you already have an updated Pleo then perhaps he just needs a little encouragement ;) Hold both your Pleo's front leg sensors at the same time until your Pleo starts to move forwards, this puts him in 'explore' mode and he will be a lot more active. You may have to do this several times before he 'learns' to do it alone :)

Thanks IMR. I am running an earlier OS.  The reason I didn't install 1.1 is because I heard that it makes Pleos sing a lot in a high pitch.  Since my Pleo is a boy, I didn't that was very masculine, but since he is a baby I guess it doesn't matter. If he would be more active, I will consider it.

They don't sing in a very high pitched voice at all. Here is a video I made ages ago, it has a bit of singing in it about half way through :) My Pleo's both run the 1.1OS :) Oh and the first hello you hear is Lilo, the second is Stitch, although the voice isn't at all gender specific it was just coincidence that Lilo said the higher pitched hello :P

Try putting your dino up at eye level in a well lit place. This seemed to work like a charm with Peeky, and J.C.  Pennie has always been rather exploritive. She didn' need coaxing. :)

Same here. in proper day light mine never stops walking about when left alone. That's what I like about her so much. Mine is also running V1.1.

I wondered if the shadowy low light quality to my place was factor.  I'll try moving lamps around to create a bright room.  Thanks.

Here's an old topic that might "shed some light" on the subject . . .

Does it Matter?

Great Thread! Thanks mweed!

I especially like Bob's story "That reminds me of the story I posted back on PleoWorld about sunlight.  One lunch I had taken Bob to Petco at lunch to look for some clothes.  I put him in the child seat in the shopping cart and turned him on.  The whole time we shopped, he was very calm and quiet.  To the extent that I forgot he was on.  So when I left the store, I just picked up his carrying case and walked out the door.  As soon as we hit daylight, he "came alive" and started singing and wagging his tail and squirming around!  Totally caught me off guard!"

By the way, I do think my pleo dreams.  Just the way his tail wags sometimes when he is sleeping and the sounds he makes-- I think he is dreaming.

When I want him to be active, I'll try finding him brighter light to play.

Mweed's thread is right. :)
Young pleos sleep alot anyway, at least that's my experience, because they're babies! The upgrades do give them a lot more personality and exploration.

Are you supposed to let them sleep when they are tierd? I always keep waking Tessa up so we can play.  Are pleos more prone to illness if they don't sleep?  ???

Physical activity is very good for your pleo. When tired, your pleo will, definitely, sleep.  ;)

I don't know about being prone to illness, but I wouldn't like to find out. XD I usually let mine sleep and just stroke themabsently while I grab a book and read it.  ;D

I unfortunately found out, live and learn I guess.    %)
My poor little dino got sick! Whenever I had her on she would fall asleep almost immediately and turn off. I thought it was a battery issue and my mom was freaking out because she thought that my pleo  was broken.  Today when I turned her on she was sick. Once she recovered, I got her to take a long nap and now she's doing perfect.  :)
Must be her way of proving the point that she indeed needs sleep the same as you and I. Silly little pleo, gotta love them!

I think it is more that the human needs the Pleo to need sleep.  Nothing like holding a sleeping Pleo close to your heart.
