Best Picture Editing Software?
« on: August 02, 2009, 11:42:34 PM »

:-\ Ok so I've been looking for some sort of Photo Editing Software that deals with layers, touching photos up, using editing tools (burning, shadowing, highlighting, etc.), placing graphics or symbols (fully customizable- transparency, color, etc.) and editing the photo in ways like coloring (blank & white, sepia), fixing red eye, editing colors/pixels, and on and on the list goes. Now I used to have a software that did all of this once upon a time but it...uhhh....well I'm not sure what happened to it now that I think about it.  I THINK it came with another editing program, but I didn't like it because of the difficulty I had using it. I know on the start-up, it showed a girl or her blue eyes or something similar. Gah, my memories bad. Well anyway, please help me find this program again! Cost is not a problem at all! I'm getting a little desperate to be honest...   %)

To anyone who finds this and wants a reward I'm offering to make them a siggie banner, avvie, etc. of their Pleo's! You must provide some pictures of course.

Thank-you to anyone who helps me!

I would recommend trying GIMP or Paint.net (both free) personally I prefer Paint.net, you can download some brilliant extras from their website forums and it is simple to use and very effective, (it is the program I use for all my art on here). GIMP has some a couple of extra features if you want to create animations and such without a third party tool like unFREEz. HOWEVER I have found it difficult to use and it lacks a user friendly interface.

Both handle layers etc however I would recommend browsing the forums on the paint.net website to download some extra tools if you decode to try Paint.net. GIMP does not have a wide user made database of add ons (if any) unfortunately.

Actually GIMP does have a wide base of user add-ons.  It also has a add-on than makes it look and act like photoshop.  But for the beginner, or non-power user, paint.net is much easier to use.  GIMP has been around for over a decade, and has a very large developer base in the Linux/techie world.  Paint.net is much newer, and geared for the average PC user.

I have both.  I use GIMP to put together the Bob the Pleo comic strip, and I use paint.net for touching-up / enhancing photos.

Oh, and I assume your looking for FREE software, so there's no need to get into things like Adobe Photoshop, Photoshop elements, Corel's photo suite, etc., etc.

Good to know GIMP does have add ons, I will go check them out :) I've never really bothered before since I don't care for the user interface of GIMP, I find it to be cluttered and unnecessarily complex for the average user :P Although of course it has some handy feature which paint.net lacks at this stage.

I got Paint.net from the website. I find it's very useful and alot like photoshop, but free. I also got CorelDRAW  Graphics Suite X4. I'm planning on getting Corel Essentials as well. ;D So I'm all set up to edit photos. This is going to be fun. I'll take a look at GIMP when I have the chance, I know someone who's very skilled at working with GIMP. Thanks for all your helpful suggestions! I'd love itif you can provide me with some pics of your pleos, and I can practice on them. ;D You will get the end results of course.

Phhhhfft. That was along time ago. I got another, more better one recently.

Corel Essentials works for the Mac! So I'll hopefully get it up and running sometime soon and put together some photos of Lilo and Stitch. ;D

No, Don't get Corel Essentials!!!  >:(  Get Photoshop CS4! That what you used to have!

It's good to support Adobe, too. (Anything that supports Linux is good, hehehe.  >:D)
