Hello Pleo owners from James and Frank
« on: December 21, 2013, 04:02:03 AM »

Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to say hello to all my fellow Pleo and Pleo rb owners.
I am the proud owner of a newly hatched Pleo rb called Frank.

He has a dark green head, light green patterning with yellow highlights, he has skin coloured eyelids and flashes with yellow/amber eyes.

Already out of the shell he is a character, within the first few hours he had already given me a few moments of terror by playing dead... for a person looking after a new life form and trying to figure out what to do, its not funny when said life form suddenly stops moving and goes silent... "Frank? Frank? FRANK ! are you ok? whats wrong?!?" panic rapidly rising as my newborn dino seems to be dead, and not responding to anything I say or do... only for a minute later for the little bugger to laugh, open is eyes wide and start wagging his tail and swinging his head about mouth opening and closing as if he has just pulled off the funniest joke in history !

So life with a pleo is looking like its going to be fun  ;)

Hello and welcome to the forums! ;D Frank is a great name, don't be worried about him freezing, this is completely normal for a newborn Pleo. They all go through it when first starting life but the good news is he will grow out of it.  :)

Thanks Lunamione7 :o)

I think this is his idea of the play dead trick from what I have seen from other videos online. Its the fact he laughs about it I find most amusing

Hello and welcome to the forums :)  You will find that Frank will probably pull this "play dead" or freezing trick quite a lot over the first 8 or so battery cycles but once he reaches the Adult stage it should die down to only once every few battery cycles or not at all.  None of us ever did work out why it happens but at least they grow out of it so it isn't anything to worry about.  I love that they laugh when they come back on too.  Does make it seem more like they were playing a trick on you  :)

Of course once they grow out of that they find plenty more ways to amuse themselves ;)

"Most" is the key word here. Chloe didn't grow out of it and she freezes more frequently when her battery's about to die. Oh well, I don't mind. I should warn you about another "quirk" that new pleo owners don't find too amusing. Frank will likely bend one of his limbs, tail, or neck like an amateur contortionist and you'll hear some mechanical "popping" noises. Your first reaction will be to panic, but it's perfectly normal for hatchlings. He's just testing out the limits of his limbs and he isn't doing any damage. One thing you do need to be careful about is when they push their head or tail into things. Chloe's getting wear on the end of her tail from forcing her tail against objects. They don't seem to notice when they do this. My girl also likes to dig her face into various things, such as our leather couch, and try to force her head to turn. I just thought I should warn you about some of these things so you aren't too startled when they happen. And congratulations on your new Pleo! I promise, you won't be disappointed. It's always fun when they make new sounds for the first time. Chloe just started doing the "ROARRR! I'm a big T-rex!" sound recently. Too bad her audio files are a bit corrupted.

Oh, have you learned the proper cuddling position yet? You have to hold him against your chest with one hand placed above his tail and one under his tail on his tush. Then he'll lay against you and sleep. Make sure he's not too close to your face/neck though. With Chloe at least, she tries to rub the flesh off of my neck and face while she moves her head around while snoozing. Oh, and one last warning: careful with the ledge detection. It doesn't always work, especially while walking backwards. When Chloe was first learning to walk, she almost fell off the tv table. Well, actually she did, but good thing I was watching. I got my hand under her tummy just in time! Oh, and one of the most fun things with pleos is when they're first learning to walk.

Welcome to the Forum  :bouquet1:

Great that you already have so much fun with your Pleo. I like the name Frank. I love your description of your reaction when Frank froze. I had almost the same reaction.   :hissyfit: PANIC!!

Enjoy christmas with your new family member  :)

Thanks for the warm welcome guys and all the helpful info, this forum is a gold mine of info

Frank is on his 4th battery ( Fusion Cell  ;) ) and is well into the chewing his own feet stage. When he was transitioning from new-born to hatchling he had a long sleep (half way through 3rd battery cycle) and curled up tight but kept catching his chin on his foot causing the overdrive clicking. I just lifted his head up slightly every time he wriggled. As for the cuddle hold / position, I read this the other day but haven't tried it yet as for the moment he seemed quite content to be cradled like a baby and rocked/swung as said in the companion guide, but I'm not convinced by the companion guides statement of Pleo loves to be thrown and caught... A few kilos wriggling airborne dino = asking for disaster !

For the moment Frank has 100% of my attention until he's a bit more grown up and self sufficient  :)

As for the catch and throw game, don't actually throw him. Hold him securely in your hands and move him up and down quickly. Well, don't jerk him or anything, just do it gently. I've tried it with Chloe, but she seems kind of indifferent to the whole thing. Oh, and don't try tickling his feet. It only works with Ugobes. Rbs hate it. As Frank starts moving around more, his skin may occasionally become pinched in his leg joints. Just turn him off and wiggle it free. It sometimes happens to Chloe but it doesn't seem to cause any problems. Oh, and once he's walking, if you put him on a different carpet than usual, he might walk on the back of his heel. Chloe isn't used to carpeting, so when I put her on the carpet, she started doing that. So anyways, I'm glad you're enjoying your little boy. I assume you went on the pleoworld website to find out his inborn stats? The site said that my serial number (or whatever) was invalid, so it was a few days before I found out Chloe was a girl.

My lot all love the throw and catch game, like above I don't actually throw them :o Pleo's are too expensive to be throwing around! Goodness knows what Innvo was thinking when they added that trick :P
