Can Pleo rb go through X-ray scanners at the airport?
« on: August 12, 2013, 08:33:48 PM »

I am going to Canado tomorrow, and we are flying there. To get through customs, you have to put your bags / luggage through an x-ray scanning machine. Will this damage pleo? Is it safe to put him through the x-ray scanner?  ??? Please help! :o

Thanks,
Will Smart  :dino-chase:

I know IMR took a Pleo from Australia to the US on airplane and she carried it, if I am not mistaken, onboard with her, I think it is ok, just tell them what you have, but no it will not harm Pleo.   RWM  :cat-hug:

I forgot to tell you though, you may have to give your little one some air sickness pills, flying at such a high altitude may make the little one ill. ;D  RWM :cat-hug:

Looks like Pleo Rb got here just in time for a trip, lucky little Pleo! :sheep1: P:D

Thank you so much RWM! I was worried that the x-ray machine might somehow damage pleo, but it's sometimes nice to be wrong :) I'm also glad that Pleo came just in time for my trip to Canada! You are a life-saver :D

Best wishes,

It would be worth contacting the airport and asking what the best way would be to take your pleo.  I took mine as hand luggage when I travelled interstate but had to put the batteries in my checked luggage.  I know airports can be funny about travelling with batteries so you might want to check this first before you get to the airport.  Wouldn't want to come up against a last minute complication.    My guys went through the x-ray machine just fine.  I did tell the operators what they were thought before putting them through and opened up my bag and showed them.  This stopped any strange questions when I got to the other side.  :)  Hope that helps.

Ok, first of all your Pleo MUST go carry on if you want him to arrive in one piece. Secondly you must have a battery with you, but wrap securely and seperately from the Pleo. I had Pleo in his sling and the battery wrapped in a couple of socks in my bag. You need to turn Pleo on for security and he needs to be on while going through the X-ray machine. (Just pop him in a tub by himself) He may or may not scream at the darkness and you may or may not get looks of amusement or bemusement form security :P

I had a different experience but I think I travelled AFTER the new battery laws came into effect (March 2013 new battery laws, traveled in April) I contacted the airline before leaving to ask what I needed to do and they were very clear that any batteries must be kept inside the robots the whole flight, they must go in hand luggage and no spares were allowed. The total voltage (of all batteries in robots, mobile phone, ipod, camera) had to be calculated and could not go over a set limit. I had spare AAA batteries for my camera which were taken off me because they had to be inside the camera, loose spares were not allowed.

My robots had to go through the X-Ray whilst turned off, then I had to turn them on for a demonstration and finally they were swabbed up the bum for explosives  %)

Each airline will probably be different so I think it best to contact them in advance if you are having any doubts.
