Lost Turtle found this weekend.
« on: March 11, 2013, 03:54:10 PM »

We were driving along on this past Saturday, on our way to see a movie, (Jack The Giant Killer,3D) just for something to do, and I allways keep my eyes looking down and out for critters running in the street, kids or elderly esp getting ready to cross the street, ( and people riding bikes who can appear out of nowhere quickly)when I spotted what looked like a turtle on the sidewalk!
I told my husband what I sawe, and he immediatly backed up and took a look. Sure enough, a real live turtle! It was about 6-8 inches from the curb where it could easily fall off into the street, land on it's back and not be able to right itself, or get run over by cars, trucks etc. (close to a very VERY busy main road. ) :o
I suggested my husband knock on the door of the house right in front of us, as it could have been their pet. He knocked and soon someone answered the door, but it was not theirs. We did not have time to go back home, so off to the show went the turtle. Luckily we happened to have a box in our van, so I dumped the contents out, put a handy newspaper in it, set it in the shady part of the car with the window partly rolled down for air, and off to see "Jack the Giant Killer". Once home I put it in a large kennel, bottom of the cage covered with newspaper, and a small box to hide in.

Did an identification search on the internet, with species familiar to CA., and I am pretty sure what I found is called a "Red Eared Turtle". To be sure I will go to Petco, wher I took some photos a few years ago of Nova with turtles that look very similiar. If it is what i think it is, i will be finding some water for it to opccupy and also they need to be able to crawl out. They will only ear their food in the water from what I read. Fuzi our kitten got so excited when she saw it swimming in the bathtub yesterday, that she fell in and got her feet wet, but that did not stop her from still wanting to get right back in again! :cat:  This turtle is deceptivly fast too!

Tommorow I will post a found add to see if anyone claims it. There are no ponds nearby, so I highly doubt it could be wild. Someone may have dumped it, there are lots of transients that pass by this area I found it. Anyone have one of these before? If it is not claimed, my Pleos may get a "close realative' of sorts...LOL   RWM :cat-hug:

Awm so cute! Those are very common in California, people tend to keep them as pets and when they get too big, they let them go in the various park ponds in the area where they seem pretty happy to live.

RWM it is so cute! Lucky you found him :)

Speaking of keeping him in your bath tub, I have a friend who went to a supermarket a few years ago and was horrified that they had a live lobster for sale. It's legs and everything were all tied up and the tank was horrible so she bought it but didn't have anywhere for it to go so it has lived in her bath tub for the past two years  :XD:
It is hard work for her to keep him alive, she has to go to the beach each week to collect fresh water for it because they die if they don't have real sea water and she has to keep ice in there because they are cold water animals.  She called him Pinchy after the lobster The Simpsons had. She has shown me videos of him and he is such a creepy looking thing but so gentle with her, she holds the food out in her hand and he takes it so gently with his big scary claws and even loves having his back rubbed! :D
