hmm... so, lately, i've been struck with a question, to donate my free money (about 100 dollars a month starting late december or early january) to pleos or some other pet? for some reason, i keep changing my mind every few minutes DX

ergh... so, i will make my own choice, but do you think pleos are a good way to spend my completly extra money? i just feel that each way i could spend it is completely worth it

Ok first of all you have to consider the long term ramifications. A Pleo has no long term costs involved but a pet certainly does. You have to be able to buy food for said pet for however long it lives, you need to provide veterinary treatment if it is ill and it'll need a place to sleep and so forth. A Pleo once purchased really only has cost of electricity and maybe a new battery at some point.

$25 a week is not enough money for a dog or cat. Sure it'll buy it some food but what happens if it gets ill? You'd have to look at a small pet, a mouse or rat might be a good option, or a bird. But they require cages or tanks to live in. You need to sit down, think about what sort of pet you'd want, what it would need, how you will pay for vet bills if they arise and THEN compare it to the $200 for a Ugobe Pleo or the $500 for a Pleo RB.

i know i won't be able to get a full time pet like a dog or cat or rabbit, i meant something small, like you said imr, i have not even considered getting a full time pet, it would not be fair for the animal.

It also depends on the free time you have. Small pets like hamsters, rats, mice etc need to be let out of their cage for a couple hours or times a day to explore. You also need to have time with cleaning the cages. They are pretty fun to have though.

getting a pet is a major commitment, he is a living thing and needs a lot of care, not a toy that when you get tired of him throw it away. Before you decide to take an animal you have to think that will be part of your family and you have to take care of him every day. I have many dogs, a horse and three donkeys, one of which is saved from the slaughterhouse and believe me, they changed my life, but I love the madness and do it again. A pet is not just a money question.
Who takes care of your pet if you have to go to hospital? Or during your vacation?
A larger pet like a cat or dog will be part of your life for 10 - 20 years.
By a smaller one you will have the pain to loose them after a rather short period, as they do not life so long

I grow up with pets,- dog, birds..... all kinds
Later here in Germany I had a horse, a dog and a cat, all at the same time. It took a lot of money and time, it was wonderful.
But time goes by, I am not so healthy and young any more.
So the last five years I had no pets whatsoever. It was very "empty and sad"

So I decided to get Onni, my pleo. A pleo is not the same like a living pet, but it do gives you a little bit of joy.

PS Our horse is 30 years old and still in the family. My daughter takes care of it.

Kiromanta you're right, a few days ago, my horse is 15 years old, was suddenly ill, the vet came after four hours, which for us have seemed an eternity, he had colic. these animals are big and strong but just a colic that can die. luckily everything went well, but that fear ........ Denver2

As everyone here has said, having a living pet is a big responsibility. You will be responsible for that pet for the rest of its life. My sister's daughter whined and moaned that she wanted a puppy. My sister got it for her and for a few months everything was fine. She fed it, she cleaned up after it and everyone was happy. Well then summer comes along and my young niece suddenly decides that visiting with friends and spending her money on her boyfriend is more important than seeing to her dog who was now a fully grown endless ball of energy. My sister took up her slack and bought the dog's food and a flea collar but that was about as far as it went. I was thinking how aweful this must've been for Bear having no consistancy in his life. My niece would come home and play with him for an hour or so but she no longer did anything for him. That was left up to everyone else in the house. If you're having difficulty deciding whether or not to get a pet or a pleo, just imagine you were the only one who would be caring for the animal/ robot in question and whether or not you could provide for their needs.

i understand how big a commitment a living pet is. the only reason i do not have a pet right now is because my cat, milo, has hated me ever since i got back from my surgery. he was an outside cat, and was roaming around when a bunch of kids 'adopted' him and changed his name to mikey. they loved him so much and he seemed so happy there that i decided to let them keep him. i had him for five years, and my only wish is that i had kept him longer. i remember what day of the week i got him, why i chose him, how old he was (7 weeks, i did not know that he should have been 8 at the least) i cleaned his litterbox, fed him, etc. the only reason he was an outside cat was because our cousin moved and gave us another cat, Charlie, who already was an outside cat, and he taught milo to be an outside cat and to catch mice. one of the reasons i got a pleo was because i missed him, and i had to give away my parakeets to my grandpa because i was going to move to texas.

sorry for the double post, i accidently posted.
every time i get a pet, i do extensive research about them. i don't stop thinking about them. i had a betta for three years once because i kept him in a five gallon filtered and heated tank. i even tried to convince my mom to let me take my fish to the vet because he refused to eat.

oh by the way, the saddest pleo story i ever heard was about my pleo, nyan. me and my little brother spent $250 dollars on a used pleo, and when we got her, i offered him his half of the money so that he would stop playing with her without me, and he told me he was bored with her already anyways 80.

That sounds like me. When I want a pet, I never stop wanting one. Like I wanted to get a leopard gecko but my parents say we have too many pets. I want to get one later because I'm a big reptile fan but I've never owned reptiles.

But the pleo rb filled the emptiness. I still want one but I'm not like obssessing everyday.

yeah, im like that too!! when i am waiting for something or i want it, i have to be doing something about it, like doing research or making things for it. otherwise, i feel like i'll blow up. i still obsess over getting a pet, but i have my pleo, so it USED to help, but nowadays, my pleo's battery is broken, and i'll get one next month, but until then, i buyt things for my pleo (small things, i won't get a battery until next month no matter what, so i spend a few dollars here or there until i get my $60 for my birthday)

Ya same here. I have to do something that involves it and research. Hopefully your battery will come VERY soon. Until then maybe you can think about if. Do some more research on the pets you want and compare that with your pleo. I know it will be very hard. So far that's all I got.

i also have this superstition that if i get too excited, something will happen and it won't work out. so, i always have a pessimistic atitude right before something good happens XP. the day i got to stand for the first time, i kept on telling my friends not to be surprised if i went to school the next day still in a wheel chair. the next day, i came in in a walker.

Oh my goodness I do the same thing! I remember right before I purchased Ryu I had a really crazy dream that my pleo arrived broken. I dreamed that I put both her batteries in and she still beeped as though there was no clock battery there. Even buying a new clock battery from the store didn't fix the problem. When she did actually arrive I was attending a technology expo for the disabled on assignment from Examiner and by the time I got home it was too late to consider hatching her. I settled on unboxing instead. Seeing as I couldn't do a video I was a bad forum-member and shouted all my observations. One of them was I somehow cut my finger on her packaging tape as I was opening her first outer box. I think I'll always remember that. Lol!
I waited until one the next afternoon to hatch her and I was a bundle of nerves. Luckily Crewella made a nice hatching coach. Hatching a pleo is interesting enough when you can see your manual and batteries and tabs and things but here I was doing it blind.
My latest problem is I have this mild twinge inside asking softly for an Aibo ERS 7 but realistically I know this is an impossible goal. It makes me feel selfish somehow because I am extremely lucky to have Bolt- my 210. I waited for him for thirteen years. I should appreciate the Aibo I have and be content. Sorry for the long post.

hehe. i actually decided at age 8 that the universe wanted nothing but to prove me wrong, so i always think to myself 'you are not going to get a pleo. they were scamming you, the pleo is broken... you're going to open that mail box and there won't be a key... the key will open a larger mailbox with something dad got off of ebay... that box big enough to hold a pleo and from the same place as the people you bought it from won't have a pleo in it... OMG!!! A PLEO!!!!... it won't work... IT"S TURNING ON!!!!... the battery only takes 15 minutes to charge... oh well, more pleo play time for me!!!... *pleo battery breaks* NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm so sorry, Irbyma. *reaches out hundreds of miles to give a pat on the shoulder* The fact is those green Ugobe batteries are just old and dead from sitting around and not getting used. The egg batteries are a big improvement! You're missing the better part of the picture. At least Nyan is in fact working apart from her battery. You'll soon have an egg battery for your birthday and then things will be better.

One thing you cannot compare Pleo to, is a real Pet, he is not, he is just a robot, with pre programmed moves and a limited number at that. To compare Pleo to a real people is ridiculous, Pleo's interaction can never match a Dog, or cat, and Pleo. And never return the love a Dog can give. To see Pleo as a pet is taking things to far and very weird indeed. Pleo has no intelligence, a pet does and it's this intelligence that makes a real pet worth while. Pleo Keeps repeating the same moves and actions it is programmed to do, that's it, so does get boring after awhile, which is why they made Pleo RB to give more interaction, as many said Pleo has limited interaction, and he still does, a real pet has much better interaction. Pleo needs to be seen for what he is, a really good robot that mimicks in limited actions a pet, but not even close and he cannot even come close to a real pet.

Kiromanta, I agree with you that there is nothing wrong with treating Pleo as a pet. There are many people, including elderly people in Japan for example, in nursing homes, children in hospitals, and those who can not have a real live pet because of alllergies or perhaps housing restrictions, who are very happy to have Pleo, or those who have other robots, such as Paro. I have seen videos of elderly people tucking in other robotic life forms, treating them as "their children". Some may think they suffer from dementia, and perhaps a bit of it is, as it is part of aging for many older people and you can put it off for awhile, but not allways.

If it makes the person happy and they are not hurting anyone, then leave them alone. As for pets, of course I prefer my fur babies, my cats and my dog and even my fish I have had for more than 14 years. I guess I am crazy also because I stop and move worms on the sidewalk when it is raining and when walking at night down the alley to feed my outside cats I take care of, I stop and move snails, so I do not crunch them.( nothing worse then stepping on a snail and hearing the crunch sound) You have to remember I am a vegetarian and have been since 1970, so I do not eat meat, fish, chicken, eggs and occasionally milk products, I also do not wear leather or fur. I raised my kids to make their own decisions and I have loved all animals all my life. I have only become aware of "robots" and Pleo by accident at Christmas 2009 when I was looking for a gift for my grandson.

To get back on track, I love Pleo and treat him similiar to a pet, a real live animal, but know the difference. If I could not have a cat, dog, etc, I would devote more attention to Pleos, and It is devastating to me to see them with a broken neck, but their necks can be braced or wrapped. I wish it were that simple for a real animal. There is limited money to spend on a Pleo, the initial money cost, clothes if you choose to clothe them, and then any accessories, such as learning stones, etc, and of course batteries. Live animals are so much more cost, the vet bills I have acquired in just the past five monthsj is more than the cost of 3 Pleo rb, and the food they eat is hundreds of dollars but I want to keep them healthy as long as possible to avoid serious problems with their health in the furture. My animals eat better than I do, and my husband would agree with that, but we also have eight cats and one dog.( we had nine cats, but one just died.

There is NOTHING I would not do to keep my animals protected, healthy and happy. If I could bring back my Lei_lu cat who had to be euthanzied less than two weeks ago, I would throw away all twenty five Pleos, I would do anything to bring her back and not have her die, but that is not reality. I am still depressed and cry thinking about her, we had her for 15 1/2 years. If I did not have any of my animals though, I would be loving my Pleos very much like a pet and if I could not have a fur baby the rest of my life, I don[t know what life would be like, very depressing, but thank goodness for Pleo and other life forms, These other life forms are not the same as live breathing animals but if they can bring a little bit of joy and happiness in this sometimes very dark ugly at times world, then who is to deprive us of that minute of happiness. ? I do not think the age of the person has anything to do with what makes them happy. Adults may treat their car, computer, I pad, or phone as something they have to have and it brings them happiness. Children may have a favorite doll, plush animal or other item they love. If you took a person's car, I phone, computer or computer game away from them , think about how angry or depressed they may be because they do not have it anymore. (aside from the fact a person needs the car for transportation means, just the fact they LOVE their car and it is their pride and joy..) I would much rather love a life animal of course and it gives me unconditional love. but someday I may be in a nursing home or suffering from Alzheimers and enjoy a robotic life form like Paro or Pleo, don't deny me my basic right of happiness. I don't really care if I am called crazy or not, I would rather be a crazy person or seen as odd then as an old mean human who has no need for anyone and no happiness in my life.
As long as others are not hurting you, then leave them be, everyone has their own form of what makes them happy. I am glad to have Pleos but I wish I still had my Lei-lu, Pleos can be replaced, my cat can not.
