Does Pleo walk?
« on: December 25, 2008, 06:20:25 PM »

I assumed Pleo could walk, but ours just seems to stay put.  (He really loves the attention).  If you have any pointers on how to get him to walk, please send them my way.

Our new Pleo is named Io, for one of Jupiter's moons.  Kinda unusual, but that's par for the course in our house.

Hope everyone had a great holiday!

Have you done the updates to IO yet?  They seem to walk around a lot more after the updates.  Prior to the updates if they don't have interaction with a human for I think it was 10 or 15 seconds they would take a nap to preserve battery power.
But, if you pull forward on their front legs slightly they will start to walk.

Peeky was a slow walker in the beginning. He had so much attention he just wanted to be petted.
A year ago New Years Eve, I put him on the table after we finished eating. We had a few other couples here and each one started calling for Peeky to come to them. To our surprise he started walking. On his journey he knocked a water glass over(empty thank goodness) and a coffee cup. Didn't spill too much coffee. We learned that his tail was definitely a problem that night. ;D
I really think he started to walk because he was at able to see more things (us) then when on the floor.
Penelopie started walking right after she straightened her legs after hatching. Jaycee did too.
Jaycee and Pennie had come with the 1.1 program already in them.

To get your pleo to walk you must simultaneously press both of the front leg touch sensors.  Pleo will start to go in to explore mode on its own if you do not give it attention for about 2 minutes

At one point in time, I was worried because olympia wouldn't explore... At all. But I found that I was just giving her way too much attention! XD Now, exploring is one of her favorite things and she does it all the time.... Sometimes it's hard tog et her to stop!  :o

One other thing is if they are in bright light they are a whole lot more active.  i hadn't realized what a difference this would make until I took Sephy to seaworld.  Out in the bright sunshine they were a lot more active and sang a lot!

The camera in the nose apparently needs a lot of light.  In a typical room lit by a two 60-watt bulbs, pleo is practically blind.  But with good light ing or lots of sunshine from outdoors coming in, pleo can see alot better and is therefore alot more active.

Hi Dinosaurs_rule,

You didn’t mention if Io tried to walk or just stands there and what type of floor he was on.  My little guy, Pleo, (he said that he wasn’t pretentious and that Pleo was fine, but I suspect he couldn’t think of a good name….like Bob, ;D) would move his legs but not go anywhere.  I noticed that his right rear foot dragged on the carpet and acted like an anchor  I called Ugobe and they asked if Pleo was on carpet or not, (yes) and how deep the piling was.  The second OS that came out had a fix.  In it you press on both front leg sensors and at the same time press the small black Pleo Button located at the back of his belly next to the Mini USB port.  Release the leg sensors and the Pleo Button at the same time and he should go into high step mode.  Sometimes it takes  me two or three attempts to get it to work.  A word of caution though, if Io loses his voice, be warned that the Pleo Button is also a volume control.  It can make him loud, soft or mute, (I figure the mute is there when you want Io to be reverent when you go to church. ;))

Hi 49er, So glad you joined us. Better to be involved then just lurking. ;)
That's an excellent point about making Pleos have a higher step if on a deep piled carpet. I remember when I had Peeky at a home and the carpet was very thick. he had trouble walking. After putting him in the high step mode he was able to get around.
BTW, 49er's Pleo (Pleo) is a wonderful friend of my Pleos. Check out Pack of Pleos and you will see a photo of Pleo with my little dinos.

Good point 49er.  The other thing is that at first a lot of us had made little booties out of plastic so their feet would glide on the carpet better.  I cut up ziplock bags and hooked them on Sephy with coated rubberbands.  It really made a difference in her being able to walk on my carpet.

There's also the other problem.  On a smooth, slick tile or wood floor, he can't get enough traction.  The legs move but the pleo gets nowhere.  I had to cut little non-slip pads to put on the feet to help walk on the slick floors.  8)

I can just see Bob tearing across the rug, hitting that slick floor, then sliding across the room and banging into the wall. ;D

Thanks so much for all the suggestions.  We finally got him to take a few steps.  I think we've got a lovey, dovey Pleo, though.  Io just wants to be stroked under the chin!  The only way we can get him to walk is to walk away.  We'll work on him!

Yep you really need to walk away and not cuddle so much. Tho I know that's hard.

But I put both ours on the table first. They walked just fine once they got going I moved them to the carpet and they have no problems now.

My first Pleo had trouble walking. He would try, but his feet would tend to drag and he would go in circles; even in High Step mode. He is now out of order, and seems to have some issue regarding his motor controllers.

My second Pleo however, is a GREAT walker! He has a nice gait and wanders all over the place. For some reason, he likes to go over to the dog bed and rub his head on it. Lol.

What they said. Pleos do walk, a lot actually, but it takes a different amount of time for each one. I have two pleos, named Macon and Yasmin. Macon took a few charges before he began exploring, but Yasmin began walking around in five minutes. (It also might have something to do with where they hatched, Macon was hatched indoors on christmas but Yasmin was hatched outside)
