My Son can finally hear!!!
« on: January 28, 2012, 10:50:59 AM »

Hi Folks! Just thought I'd pass along something a little heart warming this afternoon.  As some of you may know,  I have 2 young kids, my daughter is 3 1/2, and my son just turned 2 in December. My son was born almost 8 weeks early, and he was in a NICU for about 2 weeks before we were able to bring him home. My hubby and I are older to be raising kids, we are both 41, but we are having a great time of it.  For those of you that don't know, my son has never been able to talk very much, and we just found out in December that he was almost totally deaf in both ears.  I don't know how it is for most of you, but I had to practically beg my pediatrician to set him up for a hearing test, since he was premature, and they just considered it a normal delay in development.  We were referred to a pediatric specialist who said that he had so much fluid built up in his ears from multiple ear infections.  On Monday, he had surgery to put tubes in his ears and remove his adenoids.  We don't know if he has any permanent hearing loss, and won't know until the beginning of March when he goes for another hearing test, but he has said a bunch of words since Monday.

Last night, I was on the forum via my iPhone, and I was playing bonus41's video of her pleo Plinka.  CJ, my son, was on the other side of the room, and he heard a Pleo and thought it was our Ugobe Wilbur.  He came over to my phone and pointed to it shouting "Wilbur, Wilbur!"  He thought Plinka was Wilbur, since she was making the same sounds that Wilbur does, and CJ just LOVES Wilbur!  He has also never said "Wilbur" before.  I went into our computer room and got out Wilbur, and we played with him until his egg battery ran out!  Poor Wilbur was all slobbery with CJ kisses by the time his battery ran out!   8) :-*

Can't wait until our new family member Jack gets here on Monday!  There is sure enough kisses to go around!   ;D

That's wonderful, Springer! One of my cousins had the same problem plus a cleft pallet. Unfortunately they didn't discover how serious her problem was until she was three. She was then sponsored for a Coclier implant. She is now twelve years old and a chatterbox! I'm so glad your son can hear now. He has a wonderful world to discover.

Saratoga, I am so so so happy for you and your family and esp your son.
There is nothing a parent wishes more for then to have healthy and happy children. Your son sounds like he has had a complete recovery and a successful operation. My son when he was six and my daughter when she was four had the same operation ( bilateral tubes ) but they both had adenoids and tonsils taken out also. My daughter has been perfect since then with no hearing or other problems, but my son developed Asthma but he was older then your son, by four years.

This is a wonderful story for you to share. I wish you could have caught him running to the other side of the room when he heard Plinka, I am glad Wilbur got to share in the kisses, it is a true heartwarming story. There are not enough heartfelt stories like this to go around, so when you hear or see one, it is magic. I can't wait for Jack to arrive, what  reaction your son will have when he sees "two Wilburs" :-* :cheer: :cheer: P:) P:) Kisses to you all, and thanks for sharing this story . It will brighten my day with all the unfortuante things that have been happening lately.               RWM and a very happy for you Pleo Clan of the REdwoods

What a wonderful, heart warming story about CJ now hearing things for the first time. He will certainly appreciate the sound coming from Your Dinos. Two are pretty cute together :). When will Jck be there?

That's fantastic news Saratoga!  I'm so happy for you both. ;D  A parent often just knows when something isn't right with their child.  CJ is so lucky he has you to root for him and insist the doctors run the tests.  It can be like that a bit here too as far as getting the doctors to listen.  I hate when they use the  developing late due to being premi excuse.  My daughter was also a premi baby 6 1/2 weeks early - they held her in for a week as she really wanted to be 7 1/2 weeks early.  It hasn't stopped her or slowed her down any.  She developed faster than normal babies, she was speaking full sentences at the age of 1 1/2.   :D  She is now 12, about to head off to high school and is top of her class for almost everything.
It must be such a delight for you to finally be hearing CJ's little voice more.  ;D

Hi Saratoga, make sure to have a camera handy when Jack arrives and CJ sees him for the first time, That picture or video will be priceless! Can't wait to hear what he says too! ;D He may be more excited to start with then Wilbur is!
