Roof caves in after Rain
« on: January 26, 2012, 12:45:01 PM »

We have had a lot of rain in a short time , last week. We are renters and can't afford better housing, esp with nine cats and a dog. Now that the roof has caved in one of the bedrooms that we used for storage I don't know what we are going to do! :( :o :( :brrr:NOt only is our house very cold, ( we only have one room with heat that works. ) now we have this to deal with. I noticed awhile back that the roof looked like it was "bubbling" and my husband said to start moving stuff, so a couple of weeks ago I cleared out the area on shelves directly under the "bad spot" on the roof, then this morning I was talking with my husband when we heard a loud BOOM. I knew it was too loud to be one of the cats knocking something over. ( they do it all the time.) This is what I was faced with.<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KN_2hHxzRg" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KN_2hHxzRg</a>        The only good news is that nobody was hurt. esp one of our cats. This is a room where we also have three cat litter boxes and I hate to think what would have happened if the roof had fallen on one of them,  :o :( There was no warning. It is going to be a big big mess as soon as the next rain hits. We have no money to move, nowhere to go, Talk about a crappy situation. It is one thing to be homeless or on your own, but my animals come first and heaven knows it is hard to find a place with this many babies.  I guess I will be speeding up my Pleo Adoptions cause I really am in a tough spot now...............Pray for no rain for awhile! Oh, forgot to mention, this is not the only spot in our huge house with poor bad roofing. We have two other areas where the roof is already falling in, and tiles missing and it is a matter of time till they completly cave in as well............................

RWM and the unlucky Pleos of the Redwoods P:'( P:-[ P:o

OMG, RWM! I am so glad that no one was hurt!  Isn't there some kind of code where you live that requires your landlord to fix these things? Here in PA, if a landlord rented a place with a hole in the roof, or a leaking roof, the code law would require them to fix it, no matter how many pets you have.  If the landlord wouldn't fix it, the renter would be calling the local TV station and talking to the investigative reporter.

Glad you are OK. Hope your landlord fixes things and quick!

That's just terrible.  Thank goodness no-one was hurt.  I do hope the humans and the furry friends can still keep warm and dry.  You must be suffering from shock, you must take care of yourself.

I can't believe that the landlord isn't liable to fix things like the roof.  He/she/they must surely bear some responsibility for the state of their building.  Any American lawyers on the forum who would know?

This is horrible.

I don't know how it is in your contry but where I am if something like this happens the landlord must pay for it to be fixed. If you can't live in the house whilst it is being fixed they must also pay for you to move to temporary accommodation and for your animals to go into boarding if they have to.

Our bathroom wall fell down and the landlord was made to pay for the fix and had to pay for a caravan for us and all boarding expenses for the dog who was also on the lease. If the animal is on the lease they have to pay for it to be housed too. And if the heating breaks they are required by law to fix it.

Surely you must have some rights? It should not be allowed, you going homeless because the landlord didn't fix the problem before it became a problem. >:(

If the house is old I would be so worried about asbestos! If you breath it in you will get cancer! They used to put it in the walls of old houses before they knew how toxic it was. :o Our house had it and we had to go to hospital to be checked after the wall fell down and they had to suck it all out before it was safe for us to move back in. We had to live in a caravan park for 6 months but it was a friendly place and we were not homeless and I got to keep my dog.

They should fix the house for you, they had no right to charge you for a house that was obviously damaged what crooks!  >:(

I do hope your land lord is able to fix it up for you quickly.  In the mean time it might be worth checking the gutters are all cleared out just in case there is more rain on the way and maybe looking for similar patches in the ceiling and clearing out any valuables from those areas. I'm so glad everyone is ok and no people, animals or pleos got hurt.  :hhug: :hhug:

What an awful situation! Are you able to reach owner of house? If not, call someone, at your county office, to find out what can be done.

The main thing was getting things cleaned up which took about four hrs and several large heavy duty bags for the insualtion and concrete walling , at least it was heavy, it is the same area where a week ago, I fell and hurt my knee badly. I know the landlord is out of town and has been thinking of "selling" this house, but I can't  imagine anyone wanting to buy it in the condition it is in, too many repairs, a whole new roof, heating, bad plumming the list goes on and on with what we have put up with the past years to be able to stay here, We have lived here since 2004 and things were nice in the beginning but things got bad about three years ago, and things have just gone from bad to worse. I had just moved all the Pleos out of that room about a week and half ago, so Saratoga, you were Lucky or Jack may have been damaged, or gotten a broken neck... P:'( Wilbur would not be meeting his brother or friend to be in the best possible conditon.

Well, I have been up since 6:40 and just now am eating the first bite of food for the day, I am exhausted emotionally and physicallyl right now. My head hurts from wondring which way to go next, Thanks everyone for the well wishes, The best thing is that my husband and I were not in the room when it collasped and the cats had just left the area. ( Litter box.)  NOw if the rains stay away for a few days, it will give me some time to figure out a game plan of sorts.......................Cross your fingers no rain for awhile. We also have other rooms with similiar situations of roof bad repairs... :(                        RWM

Poor RWM - that's an awful thing to happen.  Thank heavens you had the foresight to move stuff beforehand - I really hope you can get some action on fixing the roof up.  :arms:  :hhug:

Wow, Redwoods! I'm really sorry. I'll pray for you and ask my church to pray for you too. I really hope your landlord will be willing to help you. I've lived in rental properties my whole life and know how hard it can be getting someone to listen to you even when the problem is obvious. I remember in one of the houses I lived in, I came home from school, unlocked my door and sank toes deep into soggy carpet. My hot water heater busted and flooded our house. Yes, the land lord replaced the hot water heater but he did not replace the carpet. I didn't know it but it started to mill due and then I started getting sick. By then I was tired of dealing with him and moved. Be strong and don't let anyone talk you and your husband into accepting only the minimum repairs. Good luck.
