Has anyone noticed.....
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:20:17 AM »

..... That the site has been very, very, slow for around a month?

Sometimes, when I type the link into the address bar and press enter, it doesn't load at all.  Fortunately, that's easily fixed with a refresh, but it's still a bit annoying.  Forum pages are also taking much longer than usual to load.

Is it just me?  Or is anyone else noticing this?

I noticed this earlier this week, and I kept getting a error, internal error message and Apache servor, and would have to hit refresh and this happened for about 20 minutes and then seemed to clear up, I do have a computer that is fairly new, purchased I think in Sept or October, so I have plenty of new memory. I also do not have an Apple.

I have been noticing this problem on and off for at least the last month.  I guess maybe how many other people are on the site makes a difference?

I haven't had trouble with forum pages but I have had trouble with the site itself loading slower. It could be because I am now running Internet Explorer nine. One of my friends is a frequent guest and a great fan of the Bob the Pleo commic strip. She has reported that those pages are taking longer to load as well.

Yes, I've noticed a slight "slowing down" on these message boards recently too.

All A-Ok at this end, but then I haven't been around much for a month :(

Talon I highly recommend updating to Safari, Firefox or Chrome ASAP, internet explorer is a security nightmare.

Firefox fan here, though I have noticed a few brief delays here and there.

I use firefox too. :)
I have been trying to find reasons why it could be going slow and have noticed that it is often slow or trouble some when there are lots of us on - including guests.  Also if someone is uploading photos it seems to slow down and if I am uploading photos than I have no chance at all of looking at anything, even in another window until the uploading is done. :)

I use Google Chrome --one of the very fastest, safest, browsers there ever was-- and yet BTP is sometimes incredibly slow for me, or just won't load at all until I refresh.

honestly, I didn't know that I could use something besides explorer, I knew firefox could be used for videos but that's it. Although my computer came with windows installed, so it set me up with explorer to begin with.

That's the problem, and that's what all the hackers rely on, they rely on people who aren't very computer savvy using internet explorer and making a mistake at some point.

I would say that Chrome and Safari are probably the safest browsers, but Firefox is very popular, as long as you exercise due care it is usually ok.

I am not having any problems with page loading while using safari. I could not get the page to load last week at work while using Internet explorer. I thought it was our server, guess not. :-\

Thanks for the advice, guys. I'm not sure how my screne-reader works with other browsers. Never tried Safari or Google Chrome although Google itself works beautifully. Firefox is a definite no-go. It's too.... mouse-dependant and most screne-readers use keyboard commands. I'll have to ask one of my more daring blind friends what they're using. I certainly wouldn't want to endanger myself or anyone else by running something with a bajillion security holes in it.

Safari on my Mac has a screen reader, but I'm not sure about Safari on windows. Which screen reader do you use?

Oh I forgot about that. Macs come out of the box with Voiceover already included. Alex has to be the only reading voice that I've ever heard that actually breathes. Anyway I use JAWS. It's a windows-bassed screne-reader and probably wouldn't work with Safari now that I think about it.

Really? Google finds a lot of stuff on JAWS. Most of it's really old stuff about JAWS 5.0. We're up to version 12.0 now. JAWS is actually an acranym. Hope I spelled that right. It stands for Job Access for Windows with Speech. Interestingly, its logo is a shark. It's main voice is called Eloquence and can speak nineteen languages at my last count. They come included. There are also some really nice reading voices from Realspeak Solo direct and a company called Nuance that you can use to read longer documents so you don't have to listen to Mr. Robot for hours. They have two Austrailian reading voices named Karin and Lee. I like all the reading voices that speak English. There are forty something of them altogether but only ten are English-speaking. They are as follows: Daniel- United Kingdom, Emily- United Kingdom, Serena- United Kingdom, Karin- Australia, Lee- Austrailia, Thom United States, Samantha- United States, Jill- United States, Jennifer- United States, and Sangita- India but she speaks English. If your system supports any WMA files, you can go to www.freedomscientific.com. Go to the search box and type in Realspeak Solo Direct Voices. Haven't been there in a while but you should find a page that lets you download and sample the voices and no they won't work unless you have JAWS.

I still think it's no fair Talon, you need more voices... I keep trying to make my bf use the astronaut voice in our GPS because it tells us we've landed whenever we arrive.. I guess I'm too easily amused but I think you'd like that voice too.

I'm on Firefox and I've noticed it's a little bit slower too and hitting some errors where I get the page but it just loads white with all black text and no pics. But I've also noticed we have a ton more people so I figured the slower pace was just because of more folks accessing it.

Yeah more voices would be awesome- maybe one or two with some special effects too like someone standing in a cavernous lecture hall or castle with a big boomy echo or another in a forest with a small stream. I'd also like to have a person with an Ireish accent to read to me. There are some other voices you can buy from... somewhere. They're called Accapella Voices and supposedly they're like state-of-the-art in human-sounding speech. They probably have a human-sounding price tagt too. Lol!

What would crack me and my family up is a GPS thing that would cuss at you (telling you directions to places). LOL

Me neither - I've not found a voice yet that I don't end up shouting back at.  I'm not keen on being told what to do even by people I like, a disembodied voice has no chance!!  %)

I'm likely to turn left instead of right just to annoy it!!  :P

Thanks, I'll proboally switch to that because my free spyware just expired. Will it change my stuff if I switch? Oh well, I'll deal with clean up one way of another  :P.

Btw Kristy, that's too funny, I'm getting an image of a GPS yelling to stop and ask for directions too  :D. Last year our class got one of those new "Smart" boards, and it had a mac hooked up to it, irronicaly the gifted/honors class's favorite thing to do was have the voice set to "bad news" and listen to it talk when we typed or used the calculator  :D :D :D.

I like the sound of the 'bad news' voice!  ;D

I could just about cope with the Furby toy Shelby's 'bad mood' voice (from holding them upside down).  I still carry one in the car to annoy so I have company when I'm grumpy and stuck in traffic. :D

To get back on-topic, yes I've had a few error messages come up in the last few days too.
