I'm glad you all like him. I did go out on a bit of a limb with the bright red for the striping but I think it turned out great and my kids tell me he looks awesome.

I was thinking of fire when I chose the colors in the end.

so now he is my "flaming pleo"

RWM yes this is the latex paints that I got the other day. the orange color was a mix of the yellow red and white. The yellow over tones were a mix of the yellow and the white and I thought I'd try to be cleaver and mixed in some of my bronze ink but the bronze ink seemed to just sink to the bottom and not really mix in at all so it was kind of a pointless mixing exercise. The red was just straight out of the red bottle. To try to get a less definite edge I used a sponge to apply the yellow and my second coat of orange I used a brush for the red, a nice fine tipped one. After I finished my painting I had to trow all brushes and sponges away as they were ruined by being clogged with latex that just wouldn't come out.

I think I paint too slowly and it drys so fast it clogged up the inside of the brush and sponge.

I have not turned him on yet after this last (Third) coat. I will give him the full 24hours to let the paint set. So I can't turn him on until tonight. I did run him for a short while before doing this coat and everything was fine with no signs of cracking or splitting so I am confident that it will all be ok. But we will still have to wait and see.

As you can see it is all going very well. No signs of any cracking and you can no longer see the original cracks in his neck skin either.

I did a test patch of the paint on an ice cream container lid and gave it a dose of Polyglaze to test what would happen. All went well with no signs of anything bad. The polyglaze did seem to provide a protective coating and when I rubbed the test patch it felt like my pleos do with the polyglaze on. I am going to coat Gumble in polyglaze tomorrow. I want to give him a bit more time for everything to be set and dry before I do it. I also painted his eye lids today so now they are about the same color as the patches around his eyes. I used some oil paint for this and then did a coat of ink over the top to get the right color. I didn't think the latex paint would be the right kind of paint to use on his eyelids.

Result! Great news, Kat, and he does look great - good job!

He could be a python in those colours still. I based Monty's colours on a standard Burmese python, which varies slightly but usually looks pretty much like this:

However, you can get albino or amelanistic individuals where the black pigment is missing but some or all of the other colours are present, and they can look pretty bright!

He did kind of end up a very different color scheme to what I had originally thought I would try to do. I originally wanted to go fot the Autumn leaves type look with the oranges and rusty browns But I just didn't manage to make a brown color for the stripes that I really liked and the orange was a brighter orange than would fit with that color scheme so I went with some thing a little different. Kind of a candle flame type color scheme using your lovely python type marking pattern. My son says he looks like he is a Lava Dinosaur that just crawled out of a volcano.

I think he looks very cool.

I will keep you informed of his progress over the next few days and weeks to see just how well it all holds up. I haven't gone near him with a wash cloth yet but will tomorrow before I do the polyglaze. After he is polyglazed I will run him for a full battery cycle and introduce him to the rest of the bunch to show off his new look.

LAVA GRUMBLE! lol. He looks amazing! I'm tempted to paint one, but I'm gonna wait. The "lava grumble" is my favorite of all the orange/red pleos!

Gumble looks great! I'm not good enough at painting to ever try to paint a pleo. Those colors look really nice together even if they weren't what you originally intended on doing!

I'll let you in on a secret. I've never really painted much before either.

It was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Using a sponge to kind of wipe the paint on all over for the base color really helps and you can't really get that wrong. Then you just need to use a brush to carefully paint around the eye, mouth , nose areas. A little scary at first but I managed ok. The second coat I did the same way. Then for the highlights again I used the sponge to kind of dab on the yellow color where I wanted it. which was pretty easy. I just followed the pleo pattern and tried to put it in the middle of each scale. Then the lines. I used a small pointed brush to do these and it was easy enough as I was just following the lines in the pleos body. The only outrageous thing I did was the eye patches and the lines that curve up onto his head.
It was all a lot easier than it looks. Don't be afraid to give it a go. You might surprise yourself.

Well being impatient like I am I couldn't bring myself to wait till tomorrow so I have polyglazed Gumble tonight. I did the wash cloth first and that came out just fine with no signs of paint loss.

I have given him the full three coat treatment recommended on the bottle for first time use. Each coat is applied 30mins apart to allow it to soak in. I will leave him over night and turn him on for a play tomorrow. At least now I won't be worried about stroking him.

He feels soft and silky to touch.
Unfortunately the eyelid paint Came off with the first coat of polyglaze.

It was different paint so I guess I should have expected that. I didn't take any photos or video of him with painted eyelids so you won't get to see them unfortunately. So his eyelids are back to the original brown color they were before.
He looks so vibrant and lovely. The polyglaze really brightens up the colors.

I am so happy that Gumble's Lava Paint is holding up and I am glad he is getting that silky feel with the polyglaze. Three coats, I am glad you mentioned that because I would have thought one coat is all that is needed, but I have never used that before, How long does it stay on till you can touch him, is it also 30 minutes? I hope Minyon stays "nice and new looking" or her mum is going to be thinking of new colors for her as well. LOL

Awwwwww shucks! Thank you Oz!

Best results so far on him have been Daler Rowney FW and Vallejo Game acrylic inks for the browns (mixed) and Stretchi latex mask paint thinned with FW ink for the yellow stripes. BUT: be warned it's still rather in the experimental stage. I had to use a Pleo that hadn't been Autoglymmed and then clean the skin thoroughly in order to get the inks to dry to a waterproof finish, and I can see there are slight patches beginning to wear on the sides from picking him up (probably due to oils in the skin - mine not his). I'm going to try mixing the inks with the latex for the browns to see if I can get a longer lasting finish, and when I'm happy want to Autoglym him for protection.

You can just see a small patch developing on his side, near the armpit.

And I just got a lovely surprise in the post - a cheap Pleo I bought as untested has arrived and works perfectly! The only thing wrong with him is his paintwork and skin is pretty tatty ...................

As several of the 'bricked' Pleos I bought were obviously customer returns and had hardly been played with, if at all, their skin is perfect and I feel a bit funny about painting over a perefctly good, pristine skin (probably because I'm more used to dealing with antiques - preserving 'patina' has become second nature!). This one feels like fair game!

Hmmmmmmm ............ I can feel a new project coming on!

Just to come to a conclusion on Monty the Python Pleo, as I'm happy with him now and consider him 'done'. I did go over the coat of inks with a mixture of the yellow Stretchi latex paint mixed with yellow ochre Daler Rowney FW acrylic ink and Vallejo Game acrylic ink in sepia, in varying combinations to get the different shades of brown. I really don't think it matters which acrylic inks are mixed with the Stretchi paint (as long as they're also water based). It's given a more durable finsh and feels less dry to the touch, and looks very slightly glossier. It passed the washcloth test, too.

Crewella, so glad to hear that Monty has passed with flying colors he looks fantastic! Did you decide if you are going to put the protective coating on him or not? I am glad he passed the wash cloth test, I do think some of us who have done the dreaded washcloth test, have perhaps not waited long enough before doing it, I think it is better to wait a good 72 hrs to let the inks or paint "cure properly" and then if it doesnt pass, it probably won't in the future.
I am glad you were able to do the second coat and have him come out so well, Do you have anymore painting Pleo inspirations in your "closet of hidden treasures" LOL. $:-\$

Thanks RWM, I agree that it needs time to dry thoroughly and 'go off', and as with painting anything, good preparation of the surface first is key - the skin must be completely clean of oils and grease. I found the wear and handling test was even more of a problem than the washcloth test - just picking the Pleo up and petting him was beginning to lift off some of the old ink layer. I will report back on this layer after a week.

I've just Autoglymmed Monty - the skin was almost seeming to drink the stuff! I'll probably have to do another coat tomorrow, but the softness and suppleness is coming back to the skin and it is losing that dry feeling the ink layer had. I'm pleased to report there was not a trace of paint coming off on the sponge as I applied it, too! Phew!

Is this autoglym stuff a UK thing? I have never heard of it but it sounds wonderful and with one of my rb's already peeling I think I need something better than the crap they tell you to use;/

Yep, I actually think Vinylex is probably better than Autoglym, it was just hard to get in the UK and worked out at about $30 for me to get it from the US, so I tried something sold in the UK that worked in a similar way. If you can get it, Latrine, go for the Vinylex rather than import Autoglym.
