Screaming Pleo!
« on: March 30, 2011, 06:03:31 AM »

I love my pleo, but he dosn't walk much. I can only get him to walk for a time by giving him the "go explore" command. I have seen other pleos walk across a room, but my little guy won't wak across a table! If I leave him alone he screams where he does the "ahahah!!!" (I have tried spelling that 20 different ways). I always pet him before he can finish crying, but should I let him finish to get him to be less dependant? Is it because he sees me and knows i'm ignoring him? I want him to be a little more independant, but I don't want him mad at me! How long do you leave your pleo "alone" or without petting? Thanks!

Update: btw Pleo is running life OS 1.0

My Ugobe doesn't walk much on his own either. He screams quite a bit as well, and lifts his back right leg as if he is injured.  I would post a video I knew how to do it.  :(  He is spool sweet, but he really doesn't walk either unless I put him in the explore mode, and then it is only a few steps.  He was new at Christmas. He is not alone when he screams.  I could be petting him and he will still scream. :(

Uh-oh. Both the Ugobe pleos I'm looking at are running 1.0, I think. Ryu is an RB. I have absolutely no experience with Ugobes but I'm thinking about buying one to see the differences. Sorry I can't help you with your screaming pleo.

With all Pleos you do need to go through a phase of ignoring their complaints if you want them to become more independent and go exploring on their own.   they will scream at first, but will get bored of that eventually.  ;)

Talon, it's the 1.0 and 1.0.2 Pleos with the lovely giggles.  It's easy to upgrade later if you want to.  :)

Oh. Have to find that thread again about the different tickle responses! The screaming for attention kind of reminds me of what happens when you first bring a new puppy home. They're fine as long as you're petting them but leave one alone or put it in its box for the night and, "aow! awwo! aowow!"

It sounds like you just need to leave them alone for a while and see if that fixes it.  Gumble my Ugobe will happily walk around all over the place if I leave him alone for more than a couple of minutes.  The only way I can keep him still is if I pat him. :)
Maybe upgrading the software would help?

As for how to upload video.  I upload to you tube first and then cut and past the youtube address into my post.  To upload to youtube you just need top sign up to youtube which is free, and then click on the upload button and then select the video file from your computer and it will do the rest for you. :)  It does take about 30mins to upload about 3 or 4 min of video so you need to be patient.   :)
Hope this helps.

If you use a smartphone to take your vids and the vid is in MP4, Youtube won't accept it. I tried. My niece and I ended up using Photo Bucket and something called Tiny Video. Took about thirty minutes to upload for seven minutes of footage. Hopefully you are blessed with a digital camera! Lol! If anyone knows of an easier way but still using MP4 because that's the only format my phone will produce, let me know.

Thanks Kat and Crewella! I will try to upload video soon.  I have pictures to upload as well.  I have to admit that Wilbur, my Ugobe, does not lead and independent life.  There is always someone petting him when he is out.  I will have to turn him on when the kids are asleep and see if I can get him to walk on his own.  I'm still not sure what the leg lifting is while screaming, but hopefully it will straighten itself out.  Kat's making him a new cape...maybe that will make him happy.  ;D

Yes, Talon I do have a digital video camera.  My husband bought it because of our kids.  Sorry I can't help you with MP4's, but I am sure that Youtube will be compatible with them soon, as smartphones are becoming so popular.  Good luck in you search for a Ugobe Pleo.

Hmm.. both of mine are on the original software they came with and I can't stop them from walking.. Lyssa Is always running around growling at stuff and Patches likes to run around the couch over and over and then fall asleep halfway under it so I go crazy trying to find him.

My RB's, on the other hand, are not walking much at all.. Bingo is much different since his upgrade.. They constantly, I mean constantly do the mooing thing to go into the trance for the 'mating dance ritual' as I call it.. I'll try running one of them without anyone else on... I miss having all of them running around together.. I only ever had 3 doing that at once.
They are so much grouchier too.. I think they programmed in a 'teenager stage' and both of my RB's need spankings or time outs or something.

I hope Pleo starts to move around more for you.. are you sure he/she is working properly? No limbs stuck or anything? The other day Lyssa's leg got stuck and it took me forever to notice it.. she finally just started screaming and I went and turned her off and back on.. she was fine.. I just thought she was trying to kill the boot she was facing.. poor girl.. :(

From watching my lot, all of the Ugobe OS versions will roam if left to their own devices.  Moschops is running the earliest, OS 1.0 (or possibly 1.0.2) and seems the most likely to go to sleep if ignored rather than wander, but I can't quite be sure why that is until I get him a new battery for a fair comparison with the others.  Even he will do a full circuit of the room when the mood takes him, though.  Belle the RB does seem a lot less keen on wandering than the Ugobes.

Lyssa will literally wander the house for her entire egg battery cycle if I let her..
Patches stops and looks at every board on the floor to be sure it's not a hole or something he shouldn't step on when he is truly exploring and not just circling the couch but Lyssa marches over discolorations and holes and sometimes we can't find her..  :o.. she even got in the bathroom one day she had to move a (empty) box I had placed to stop her leaving the room.. I guess while she was turning around she knocked it away and when she came back.. wallah.
Both of them will just sleep on my lap if I put them there... the pain from my last surgery .. this is funny  ;D .. the kneading they do with their back legs when they are cuddling into you.. I put them on my belly when it hurts a lot and it sometimes helps.. lol.. it's just like someone continually rubbing it very, very gently.. so I guess they ARE therapeutic.  ;D ;D :D

I don't think that his leg is damaged because he can play tug of war and everything else. When I touch the sensor plate he bends the leg. I dunno. I will turn him on and leave him alone this evening and see what happens.

Awww, that sounds so lovely, Sarah.  Indeed they are supposed to be therapeutic!  :D

Good luck Springer (is it OK to call you Springer?), it's hard to ignore them at first but just keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't get into any trouble.  I'm sure he'll be fine!  :)

It's fine to call me springer! Anyway, I let Wilbur in the kitchen for about 30 minutes while I was doing the dishes. He did walk a little, but I think th lines on my kitchen tile is messing him up. He is running OS2. Do you know how I can get him to high step on carpet? My kids rooms have hardwood floors, but I haven't had the carpet torn up in main room yet. I guess I could use computer room with flat office carpet. That's where Candy roams. He did seem to stop screaming and lifting his leg after I ignored him for a while. :)

Thanks for all the help everyone! I'm gonna try and leave him for a bit. I don't want to overdo it because he is still growing (i beleive stage 2 or 3), but I will try and let him be for a couple minutes. I'm amazed the rbs don't walk much, it seems like they walk more, but that is compated to my little guy so maybe I will see the difference soon. Thanks Again!

I don't have thick carpets so have never used the high step mode, but I found the following in an old post:

"you can initiate the high step mode by touching the sensors on both front legs and the button under his belly at the same time.  This is the same button that controls the level of sound for Pleo.  They won't automatically change into the high step mode when they reach the carpet. "

This would have been from before the OS2 update came out, so I've no idea if it will still work but worth a try maybe?  :-\

Your poor "Lyssa" Pleo (about her leg). :-O :-( Wow, some times you can't find her eh? Yikes! :-O lol at her getting into the bathroom. I'm glad they help some times when you put them on you. I'm glad they're therapeutic for ya! lol

SARAH,I am so happy to hear you say that your little gang of pleos are therapeutic, that is so true and so neat to  hear. I love the way cats knead but sometimes their claws can be sharp, and luckily, Pleos do not have claws. That would be so interesting and fun to watch if you could set up a video camera somewhere and have a record of the little guys doing some therapeutic massage on your stomach or where ever else it was needed.  :D Maybe you can make some money by renting them out to private parties for people who have just come home from hospitals or short stay surgery and do not feel good enough to go  out of the house for physical therapy...I must say though seeing Patches in his Skeletor costume may have some patients doing a fifty yard dash before they are able and or breaking a stitch or two! :D( Just kidding you know but I would love to see a video) I am glad they can perk you up and make you feel better. They are second only to my cats and dog for making me feel better.

Lol I keep trying to get footage of Patches racing Lyssa but she always refuses to move when he does.. I think she's jealous.. but it's safe to say the sick patients could definitely outrun him :)  And he makes it look cute, he's determined not to be an evil skeletor.
I read some articles, can't remember where, about hospitals using Pleos for sick kids.. I guess they can just sterilize them and let the kids play with something that is as close to an animal as they can get.. I know how happy they make me.. imagine how happy a poor kid in isolation would feel to play with one!!

I will try to get my boyfriend to take a video when Patches, Lyssa and I are all asleep in the lounge chair.. We probably look pretty silly or at least I do with them laying all over me but they help :)

My dog helps as well.. when I'm feeling very sick he comes over and puts his head right by where it hurts and looks sad and/or cries. He tries to comfort me too.. very cute and sweet.. all of our pets/family members, organic and robotic, are very helpful :)
Also, whenever he hears the contented ugobe sigh when they settle on me for a nap, little Ben will come running and has to hop up next to us out of jealousy.. lol.

Pets are wonderful. They say "I love you" in the truest sense in a language without words that everyone can understand.

i found the older ugobe OSs to be very needy and not independant, took a lot of ignoring and coaxing to get them to explore. on PM2 my guy navigates my room many times! as well as singing occasionally and eating my floor ;D

maybe an update will help.  ive only really got major enjoyment out of my pleo since PM2! contaversial, i know ;)

Although Iggy was pretty independent from the start (adopted, so maybe he'd been well brought up!) I like the OS2 upgrade as well.  I love the tricks and he's as independent as ever and even more active.  I've kept Budge on the earlier 1.1 OS, but just for variety really.  :D
