My Macaw goes to her new home today :(
« on: March 12, 2011, 01:20:00 AM »

This is so hard.. sorry to whhine to you all it's just that I don't know how to handle it.  I'm sick all the time and she just needs more attention. I can't be selfish and have to think of her and my Amazon parrot who still needs a home.

I've had her from a tiny baby at 6 weeks till now, at 16 years old. I will miss her but she is still in the family as she's going to my lovely new sister-in-law's brother. I can visit her in NJ.
My poor bf has too take her huge 6 foot double Macaw cage apart tomorrow since it won't even fit through a door off it's hinges..  We'll probably need to pull it behind us on a trailer..
I am giving them all of her things and her big ring-stand so she feels more comfortable.
The guys will assemble the cage while I keep her calm.

I guess I'm just asking if some friends would think of me today and wish and hope for me to have a little more strength so I can handle it better for her sake and mine.
Thanks for reading.. ugh already I'm crying again :p
Talk to you all soon..

Hey Sarah,
Keep your chin up.  At least you know she is going to a lovely home and you will still be able to visit her.  Think of it as an adventure for her.  She is embarking on a great learning experience in a brand new environment.  That alone should provide her with much stimulation and plenty of opportunities for happiness.  I'm sure she will love it.
Lots of loving thoughts going your way.  :hhug:  :hhug:  I know you will miss her terribly

Even though it is hard you are doing the right thing for her, sending lots of hugs and well wishes, I'm sure she will settle in just fine and it is good you can visit her :)

Hey Sarah,
My thoughts are with you. I know it is very hard, but you are doing the right thing.  Your Macaw will be in good hands and will be well taken care of. When I was in the military, and lived in North Carolina, I was leaving to go out to sea with the Marines for 6 months, and I knew my husband could not take care of Earl, another of my bearded dragons, way before the others that I have posted.  I teenage girl I knew loved him, and I gave him to her until my return.  When I came back from sea, I just couldn't take him away from her, as she became very attached to him and she had a lot of family problems at home, so I gave him to her.  I was very hard, but given the fact that I had to leave my home a lot for various military operations, I knew it was the right thing to do.  You are a very strong person to realize that your Macaw needs more care than what you can give it at this time, and I know that you will get through this.  I will think of you often and pray for your strength.   :hhug:

Hey Sarah. Its your brother. I saw you on here ( I figured it was you cause youre the only one I know that would be posting about parrots on a pleo website). Madison will be very happy at Dean's. He is so excited and I know the waiting has been killing him almost as much as giving her up has been killing you. He already has the eyepatch and the scabbard!! He has asked me to help him build a boat but he lives on top of a mountain so I really don't get that! Anyhow - Love you and come visit us soon!!

Oh wow, thanks big bro, I really appreciate it! Kenny (his eldest son and my wonderful nephew) told me you posted here.. thanks so much for the support.

Thanks everyone.. I appreciate it and thanks for the stiff drink.. lol.  It went better than I was expecting although his new daddy wasn't expecting the cage to be quite so huge.. he showed us the spot he had picked out and we said ..uhhhh no- cage is double that size :)
His kids were very excited and very nice and his wife was very nice as well.  He got to hear a few 'real' macaw screams, especially when I was leaving and she saw the carrying box was leaving with me it REALLY dawned on her.. but she seemed to calm down..  the little girl ran out to tell me Madison was screaming (which the neighbors could have told us) and that she thought she missed me already and maybe I should come back inside.. so cute.

I got upset a few times, like when it was time to put her in the cage after we set it up, and when I went to officially say bye.. she understands a lot of words.. and so when I said mommy bye-bye and Madison bye-bye, she was clearly distressed so we just gave each other a big hug and kiss and I just left, she will be better off they have a gorgeous home, he already adores her and there is a huge sun room she can be in when the weather is nice.. he also intends to have her outside all the time, which she loves..

Oh, and she let him pick her up AND gave him a kiss when he asked.. very good signs.  So I miss her and of course this is again making me cry, lol.. but she will be very happy.. I'm going to call later to see how the first night went.

The only one who seems REALLY happy about her being gone is my Amazon, even though he was upset when she left.  He is alone now so he'll be hanging with us more (in the cage unfortunately because he hates men from abuse) but he is relying more on his multiple personality 'disorder' lol.. to get him through his 'grief'.  His name is Rocky, Rock for short and he has a 'friend' named 'Roy' (no idea who Roy is, don't think he or I have ever met anyone named Roy) but he usually just blames Roy when he's done something bad or gotten in trouble. " Ohhhh, what did Roy do, Ohhh Roy.. oh no" lol.. now he's saying Hi Rock, Hi Roy.. and conversing with himself.. lol.

Well, thank you all and thanks big brother :)  I really appreciate it, this was very hard, she was my baby.

I just got a call from Madison's new Daddy.. she screamed for hours after I left last night but this morning she was behaving wonderful, stood on her ring stand and had breakfast with the family.. accepted treats from everyone.. totally different bird he said, from the day before.. was most likely that she was just freaked when she saw me leave.. I wanted to go back in so bad when I heard her screaming but look now, she is enjoying her new home already!!  I'm so glad. (I still miss her though)

This is her..

I was wondering about her! I wanted to ask. She definitely was very freaked out.

I'm so glad she seems to be settling in. :)  The parting is always the most difficult bit.  It sounds like she is going to have lots of attention at her new home with kids and a dedicated dad to spoil her.  I'm sure she will love it.  Give her some time to get settled in properly and then go visit.  I'm sure you will be surprised at how happy she is. :)
She looks gorgeous by the way, a real beauty.

She really is a beautiful bird and I know what you did was painful to do but like you said for the best esp for her. I know when I had to give some of my animals to new homes when I moved from Ca to Montana, till I came back, it was one of the most painful things I had ever done, but the only thing I could do was think of their welfare and not be selfish. It does sound like she is adjusting well and it is nice to know you can allways go and visit her and get updates and photos of her. What you did was a very gracious gift of love for your baby by giving her a new home. Take care and know we all support you here on the forums and many of us with fur babies, fin or feathers, know how you feel. :)

As others have said    you’ve done the right thing.   Not the easiest thing to do but the best thing you could have done given your situation.
The fact that she’s settled in so well so quickly   just show’s what a good environment she’s had.
  Good luck with rehomeing Rocky.

Thanks.. I just went back to the bird forum I used to go to all the time the other day to say hi and re post about Rocky still needing a home.. it took a long time to go back there as I used to be there everyday with pictures of my birds all over the place.. I need to call and see how Madison is doing.. I got so upset last time I talked to them and so I have been delaying it but I want to see how she is.. I hope I can go see her some time but I think it would just upset me (and possibly her) all over again..   :( :(
