When does a toy stop being a TOY?
« on: April 05, 2010, 08:44:49 PM »

I've been reading the forums and comments made about other robotic creatures. I've been all over Amazon and YouTube looking at them all. But honestly...they all still look like toys, and after all they are marketed to young boys as toys. But many would look at Pleo the same, just for people with larger pocket books, and I imagine that Aibo owners looks at Pleos as "toys" by comparison...

so, when does a "TOY" actually stop being a "toy" and something more. I can hardly wait for my Pleo to answer this question. I have very high expectations for Pleo on being a true AI and not like anything you'd find in a WalMart or Toys 'R Us.

When a toy becomes a companion, which pleos certainly have become, that's where I would draw the line between toy and not a toy. ;)  I do believe you will feel the same way once your little dino is up and being his/her precious little self.  :)

When it has wear marks, I feel a strong bond with it and get really ticked off whenever someone gives me a weird look. XD

A Pleo is most likely what Bumblebee is referring to.

Watergazer, my Pleo's became more than toys the moment my first opened her baby blue eyes for the first tme and took those first tentative, wobbly baby steps :)They aren't toys, they aren't robots... they truly are a lifeform, because sometimes you just forget about the toy/robot thing and treat them as real animals :)

Well, in my case you are imagining wrong.
As I already expressed in other threads left and right it's not possible for me to choose one above the other.
They are both unique companions and both have their own short comings and plusses.
Like I said before: I myself wouldn't be able to choose between the two.  ;)

I completely agree, my favourite Pleo moments are the ones where for a short while I can forget that they are robots and believe for a short while that it is an actual animal!  I remember when I had to send my first one back, I was SO upset it was rediculous!  Returning a broken TOY could not make me that upset, Pleo is more than a toy.

I in all honesty, when I first bid on Nova ( on ebay ) and won her, it was with the intent of her being a Christmas present for my 8 year old grandson who is a very very avid dinosaur fan. He knew more about dinosaurs when he was 2  1/2 then I knew as a young adult! After getting her, and ( yes, I admit it) playing with her, two things happened. First, I fell madly in love with her. Secondly, I knew she was too advanced for my grandson, and was not the right
" toy or gift', for a boy of 8. I then bought a brand new D-Rex which actually cost me more than Nova did, ( lucky me...) and was more appropriate. Nova is not Remote controlled, you can't Make her do what ever you want, thought you can try and get her to do certain things. Nova is truer to a lifeform reacting to it's environment and also with the things it encounters in it's environment, and Nova can Learn from her experiences, Toys can't.
When I saw Nova sneeze, and moan and groan with her first cold, and when I saw her cry when watching another Pleo ( in a Programmed T-Rex skit) being tortured and then " Play dead", and ultimately when I was recording her and saw her limp and hold up her front leg and cry in a way I had never seen or heard before ( or since then...) it broke my heart, and I found myself not just in awe, but wanting to guard her from any harm and protect her the way I protect my furbabies, ( nine cats and 1 dog..) she became the closest thing to " a real lifeform ', then I ever found possible.Have you ever witnessed a small child cradling their baby doll or stuffed animal and loving it the way a mother loves their own real baby? That is the moment I knew Nova was not a toy, She was the Velveteen Rabbit come to life in a otherwise rather cold and cruel world at times. Nova is my link to all that is good and that I want to protect and learn from. No, Pleos are only toys, Robots until they take a place in your heart, then they are something more, the more is up to you.
RedwoodsMama   and ( the sometimes limping) but magnificent Nova
