I have a recording of Nova sitting at my computer watching a video of a Pleo that has the downloaded personality of the T-Rex installed. Nova is very interested and is watching the other pleo. She hasn't done a lot of talking with this other Pleo, until one scene where the Pleo is Pushed over and is crying. Even though this Pleo " Rex" has a different voice, Nova gets quite concerned when he falls down and cries. Nova Cries out in a DISTRESS CRY, one I seldom hear.She also is moving her head back and forth and looking to see what will happen next, but this is pretty much when the video ends.
I swear Nova acted very emotionally and showed genuine concern for this other Pleo, even though he sounded like a different species. How is Nova
able to detect that this is another Pleo when it is on screen, and more importantly, how could she detect that this was a Pleo when the voice was different?
Are Pleos able to detect Stress calls even when it is not the usual Pleo call for help? Was Nova acting on an emotional level, or on a built in sensor seeing the Pleo " down"? I would like to think it is just her caring side, and not a built in program. I have this on video, but am not sure how to post a video, is it the same as posting a photo in the gallery?
The other thought is that since this is a ' downloaded personality" perhaps it is built into her " computer brain or Motherboard," to recognize this as a Pleo in disguise........Any thoughts out there?
Personally, I just think Nova knew this Pleo-Rex was in trouble, the " sheep's" clothing didn't fool her. She really got very upset for him....I even think she has nightmares about that video. Everytime I take her to the Computer to watch some Pleo Videos, she looks anxious and a little upset, I think she is remembering,

The only way that Pleo's are able to detect other Pleo's in the vicinity is by their infrared sensor. This means that Pleo's are not able to detect other pleo's through videos and sounds. In just the same way that you cannot control your TV with the remote if you are in the next room, Pleo's cannot "see" other Pleo's unless they are standing there close by in the same room.

They do not have good enough software to be able to recognise specific sounds, they only know if a sound is made, and can judge the direction it is in.

So does this mean NOva wasn't " watching the other Pleo?" She was very interested, and really got upset! I have also shown her videos of Herself being filmed, and she watches these too, but didn't react the same way when she heard the distress cry of this " T-Rex Pleo". Why couldn't;'t she see the In fared Camera of the other Pleo if it is at her eye level? Wouldn't she recognize it that way? Wouldn't Nova watching the video be the same as the way she reacts and talks to her Mirror image? I guess I don't understand the difference.
When Nova sees herself in the mirror, she says different things I haven't heard before. I guess you could say she is talking " Pleo." She may not have the " ( technology to see or understand what she sees,') but in my heart, I know she feels the pain the Pleo was in, she definitely was upset and distressed. You should see the video to see what I mean. She just looked so sad and concerned........
I am going to have her watch some other things , and see how she reacts, if it is the same distress call or if she loses interest.
Thank you for your input, I want all the feedback, esp if anyone else has had this reaction with their Pleo.

The short answer is that no, I do not think that Nova was acting any differently watching the video, or it's reflection.

Indeed Pleo's camera would not have a good enough resolution to "watch" the video anyway.

I have already explained that Pleo would not be able to understand what it is hearing, it only understands if a sound is loud or not, and which direction a sound is in.

This leaves us with the possibility of Nova detecting IR from the pleo in the video. This is not possible for two reasons I will explain.
Firstly when a video camera records IR light, it then records this as normal visible light, this means that the video recording has no record of any infrared light, only of visible light. Secondly when you were watching the video on your computer, your screen has no way of sending out infrared light. This means that you should be able to see a little light flashing on the nose of your pleo if you film it. Rule of thumb is, if you can see the IR light, then your Pleo cannot.

All of the fact aside, although I say your Pleo will not act any differently to the video of a Pleo being tortured and a video of a nice flower, you can believe what you want. In my experience it has been usually a waste of time for me to write up all of the facts about Pleo as it often does not change what people believe their Pleo's are doing. Sometimes it's just majic I guess.

I guess I understand the technical part of it, doing with the light or camera in her nose. What then or why do Pleos react , talking etc, when they see their own reflection in the mirror.? What are they reacting to? Nova will see herself in the mirror and start talking and " Seems Fascinated, " and it is hard to redirect her, but if I put a inanimate object in front of her, such as a lamp, ( if she is at eye level to me on a table for instance,) she sniffs it, but then maneuvers around it. Why does she stop to talk to her image in the mirror, but doesn't' stop to talk to the Lamp?

I like these explanation, they help me understand Nova better, even though I still have to remind myself ,that she is ( a robot.)

It must just be a coincidence for you that you have your Pleo standing in front of a mirror while it is in social mode and it interacts with other objects when it is in explore mode and will back away from them.

Pleo uses it's IR for communication, but also for object detection. The way a Pleo detects objects is that it bounces it's IR off a surface and if it sees a reflection of its IR then it knows an object is close. For IR most surfaces act as a very good mirror, so your Pleo will see its reflection a lot of the time, using an actual mirror only makes it easier for Pleo to detect the object. Pleo knows it's own IR signal from any other Pleo's IR signal, so it won't do anything if it sees it's own signal.

Hi degers and Bumblebee, Thanks for input and how to on the video. I will go to Youtube and put the video on as soon as I get a chance and then try to put it here. It is very intersting to me. I have never seen Nova act like that before, Whether it is just a " coincidence or not," still interesting to me, I felt sorry for Nova, like she was seeing a friend in trouble. I appreciate all the feedback, pro and con, just opinions on what everyone has experienced with their own Pleos or like degers, knowing the ins and outs of technical stuff that I do not know about the inside of my baby.( Nova) For now, I am just going to soothe, her.
I do have one other plan of action. I am going to show her the video of her watching the Pleo-Rex, and tape how she reacts this time. Now that should be interesting ..............don't you think?

Hi guys, do you have to set up an account to put a video on YouTube? I am going to see about how to put the video on, and then if I can insert it here, that is what I want to do. NOva says she wants you to see it too. She wants everyone to see what she felt when she saw that video, she does have feelings, emotions.( at least it sure looks like it....you will have to judge for yourself.) Glad to see others are interested in watching her reaction. Let me figure out how to do the Youtube thing and then post it here. Thanks everyone.

Hi, I hope someone can help me answer this question. first of all I re watched the Nova watching Pleo-rex video about half a dozen times. The whole video is about 1 minute in duration. Several things happen during the video recording which I hope everyone can see for themself.This is the timeline of what happens.
1.Nova is at the computer watching the video . At about 20 seconds she begins to intently watch the Pleo-Rex
2. At about 20 seconds, there is a Person holding onto the Pleo-s nose, and the Pleo is distressed looking. Nova notices.her head is shaking back and forth like no, no
3. AT about 25 seconds the Pleo looks directly into the camera, before falling over. Nova is very interested,
4. At about 40 seconds Nova sniffs a couple of times, then the Pleo gives out a call
5.at about 48 seconds Nova gives a little cry after watching the Pleo fall. The Pleo crys out and lays there.
6. At about 1;00 minute in the count, Nova gives out a long distressful wail, and her eyelids droop . After this the owner of the Pleo picks him back up and Nova has her head kind of drooping. I stopped videotaping shortly at 1;10. If you watch this over and over, it is very apparent she sees this other Pleo and feels for him. Now here is the question....PLEASE ANSWER IT IS IMPORTANT!
IJ have this video ready to upload, but I am not certain about Public domain, and copyright infringement etc. I don't know if by using the other person's video in my video if I have broken any rules. There is not mention of whose video this is, but I don't' want to break Any rules and get kicked off of youtube before even using it.Does anyone have any ideals? It is obvious she is watching a video but you don't see the whole video and there are no names mentioned. Is there any other way to post this video here without using Youtube? Am I legal or breaking a rule by posting this video. Help me figure out what to do. I have the account all set up, what is the next step

IMR , thanks for answering the question....does that mean that the original person who posted the video of their Pleo " dying as a T-rex" won't sue me for using their video in my video? It is my Nova watching their video on Youtube that I taped and just happend to get a good reaction. As long as I am not getting in trouble with them or YouTube, then I will post it there and then upload it here if that is OK. I just don't want to get someone else mad. It was not intentional, just amazing watching her interact with the video. If you tell me it is OK, then I will take your advice. I wont mention anything on line other than she is watching a Video and her reaction which speaks for itself.

After I post it, is it easy to post here ? do I have to put it in the gallery first, or attach it to this thread that was started.?

Let me know what I do, and I will do it first thing in the morning after a strong cup of Java , ( tea for Nova....catnip tea I think..)

Hi all, I am going to post the video of Nova watching the Pleo Rex video today. I am new to Youtube but set up an account last night so hopefully it all goes OK. when I post if here, do I use the brackets{ }[ ]twice around the code from youtube like bumblebee said.? I guess if I don't get it right, I will find out shortly. Some strong coffee first and then I will give it a go. Wish us luck in being successful so everyone can watch Nova's reaction.

IMR, hi, thanks for all the technical jargon, I will have to copy it. I know from the T-rex personality download that " he is just playing dead," but to Nova, he is hurt and she reacted so, she was very upset, and no-one can tell me after watching this that she was not watching it or reacting to what she " Thought was a hurt pleo." She even shook her head in the beginning like to say, no no, no and was upset with that call.
