Storing Pleo for years
« on: December 29, 2015, 04:32:42 AM »

I've decided to put Pleo aside for a while, probably a few years. I still have the orginal package, plus the shipping box. I'm thinking maybe putting some silica bags in as well, just to prevent any moist.
But what about the battery? How will it hold best in storage? Completely discharged, or fully charged?

Any other advice on storing a Pleo long term?

Your two biggest problems with long term storage are the battery and temperature.

When you're talking about storing for "years" even a fully charged battery will have gone dead after several months.  The LiPoly batteries in RBs are much better than the NiMH in the classic pleo, but time is never good to a rechargeable battery.  Regardless of whether it's charged or not, the battery will suffer from age.  Most modern devices are shipped from the manufacturer with a partially charged battery meant to last for several months while on the shelf, not years.    But whatever you do, full charged or discharged, DO NOT leave the battery in the pleo while storing.

Temperature extremes and temperature fluctuations are what will do the most damage to you pleo while in storage.  WHat you want is to store the pleo somewhere where the temperature is fairly consistent.

Put the pleo into packing position, remove the battery, and repack as close to the way the pleo was originally shipped . . . even to the point of double boxing.  Pack the pleo back in it's box and then put the pleo box in the shipping box if you still have it.  Then pack away in the back of the closet or other safe spot.  DO NOT store in a garage or other non-temperature controlled storage area.

Wait several years . . . unpack, charge battery, and be prepared to order a replacement battery when the original only lasts for 15-20 minutes on a charge. :)

If you can't use pleo for a long time maybe you can leave him with friends or family who can run him from time to time so the battery stays in good condition . It would be a shame if you had to buy a New battery after a long time of storage.
