Is there any possibility to actually program the PLEO using YAWN?
UGOBE never released a PDK so how can I inject my own scripts into my PLEO?

Hi,

I really would like to create my own programs for Yoshi.

All the tools I able to find are:
  • MySkit - which allows to edit/create animations and sounds
  • Yapt - which allows to edit personalities
  • Dino-MITE - which allows you to remote control pleo

Is there a tool out there which enables me to compile PAWN-scripts and create a working pleo.urf as described in "PAWN Scripting in Life OS v1.0"? Is there any other possibilty to program pleo in any way?

Kind regards,
Frank

Unless we can coax someone who either worked for Ugobe or with Ugobe, ther eis little chance to successfully compile the PAWN scripts as we don't have all the components needed for the compiler.  Ugobe was going to provide some of the files for the build that were platform (pleo) specific.  It would take some major reverse engineering to figure everything out.

Can't we just write an email to "someone who either worked for Ugobe or with Ugobe" and beg for the code/tools? They wanted to make it open source anyway.

You don't need custom Pleo SDK tools to compile PAWNScript. You can download the IDE (Quincy) for PAWN from http://www.compuphase.com/pawn/pawn.htm#DOWNLOAD_WIN. The problem is that the means to access Pleo's various hardware through PAWN doesn't appear to be documented.

Maybe with some effort a homebrew dev kit for Pleo could be possible.

Sounds like a challenge ^^ But I think we still need the original scripts if we don't want to create the hole operating system from scratch. As you mentioned at least documentation of the hardware interfaces would be necessary.

But isn't that for running your PAWN script to run under Windows?  The PDK was supposed to include a PYTHON based build module and include files for defining the pleo hardware, and the target build should be for the ARM processors in pleo.  I admit I've never seem the PDK, but unless the pleo firmware has a built-in PAWN interpreter, there's a lot of other info we need before we can just start writing scripts.  Somehow we have to add the scripts into an pleo.urf file.  Obviously some non-Ugobe people had/have that info, as MySkit, and YAPT create .urf files . . .

PAWN interpreters are available for the ARM processor (and other popular microprocessors). This is likely why Ugobe chose PAWN as the scripting language. The .urf files are likely just compiled PAWN scripts, perhaps with a custom extension.

I have an early version of the PDK from last summer.  I also wrote a serial port console similar to Dino-MITE (mine uses Java instead), but it's part of a much larger application I wrote for Pleo.  I would like to share the entire application, I doubt my then-employer would agree to it.  As far as the PDK, I didn't have to sign an NDA but it does say its confidential and not for public distribution.  I'll send an e-mail to my old supervisor and see what I can do for you guys.

I heard back and, unfortunately, I'm not able to release anything.  :(

Hopefully Ugobe is able to release something after the cloud of bankruptcy and buyouts clears a bit.

I guess whoever buys the rights to making pleo will have the information. We just have to cross our fingers that someone will carry on where ugobe left off.
It's so nice to have you here Justin. I'm sure you will be of great help to us. Do you have a pleo?

Sadly, I don't actually don't own a Pleo!  I worked on a couple as part of an internship prototyping social robots for health care (was an undergrad CS student, now starting my grad studies). During my time I  became quite familiar with the green dinos, but I had to give the little guy up when I was finished.  I'll try to check once in a while and see if anyone has questions I might be able to answer, though.

We really do appreciate you checking in here to help answer questions!

And be sure to hang onto any code!  Once everything is settled out, you may well be able to share it . . .

Hmm, not ringing any bells... is that in San Francisco?  I talked with a few people around Miami (I go to UMiami) and Louisville, but I've never been to the west coast!

Mweed - absolutely.  I'm an open source person and I would love to share what I've done, but I have to respect my agreements.  Hopefully this changes soon.

While having lunch at our pleo meet a gentleman came over to our table and talked to us about our pleos. He worked with them too in a similar program. I believe he said at UC Berkely.

The story of "Pleo Development Kit" not yet ended !
« Reply #23 on: June 05, 2009, 12:03:01 AM »

My friend gave me some further news about Pleo and its new owner.

Most likely the production of Pleo will be continue with the same original factory and knowhow.

Also the Pleo development software kit will be released by the new owner in coming months after its completion.

This is the greatest news I heard since April after knowing Ugobe is dying.
