Has anyone seen this on U -tube?
« on: February 28, 2012, 12:06:56 AM »

Hello, I just spotted this on U - tube but cannot believe it it's genuine! Is it possible to control your Pleo rb with an app or is this too good to be true? Have no idea how to put a photo here but it's titled PLEO rb apps. Posted 28 February by kvc9279. Took a piccie on my iPad but don't know how to put it here. Lottibell. :o  ^-^ ???

Whoa!!!!!  I'd not seen that either, though I'd heard rumours!!  (I loaded it onto your post for you)  ;D

Clever people did do stuff for the original Pleo, like this, so I guess it was just a matter of time!  :D

I don't like it though, I mean the whole point and main draw of Pleo is that he's autonomous, and can't be controlled-- to suddenly give him like a remote control... :-\ ehh, I can definitely appreciate the genius tech-ing that went into the application, though!

:sheep1: Crewella, thanks so much for that! Had a giggle to myself when I saw the video, thought I had somehow caused it to appear with my feeble cut and paste attempts. Was momentarily most impressed with myself!! Tee hee!
Yes Wicked Lady, quite understand your misgivings. Perhaps it might appeal to some Pleo owners who seem to have decidedly petulant Pleos with oppositional defiance disorder! Could be just what they need to finally enjoy a jolly ditty from their disobedient Dino? ;) :D

*Snigger*  I thought I'd better own up, Lotti! :P

For me the joy is in finding out how it's done and set up ........ but overall I agree, I prefer my Pleos to be autonomous, and awkward! :P

It could be a skit done to coincide with the app... If it is a remote, I want! It would be so useful for posing and videoing mini movies...

I watched the iPhone video and the first thing that came to my mind was if they are using bluetooth to connect the app to Pleo... exactly how are they doing that? I don't think RB has bluetooth? The robot must have been modified?

I think this is a great idea. Apps were what got people to buy these types of phones, you can customise your phone to do what ever you want it to do, as they say 'there is a app for that'. If this sort of customisation by the end user was available for robots I really think it would revolutionise the whole robotics industry and more consumers would want a robot. If robots could run apps they could play games with you, read to you, you could choose the personality and features yourself. If you want a useful robot you download and run apps that make the robot helpful such as reading the weather, time, news reports out to you. If you want a companion you run games, personalities, you could have an app where the robot reads out a story and has animations to match.

When you buy a smart phone it is just a shell only capable of sending texts and making calls until you go to the app store and buy the additional features YOU choose. I think this would be fantastic in robotics. You choose the robots body, humanoid, dog, dinosaur, whatever. It is a blank slate right out of the box but when you connect it to your phone or computer you can choose a series of apps for it to run. Your own customised robot doing what ever you want it to do. I think it is where robotics will go in the future.

This was some work done on running the original Pleo, including Bluetooth:

For a minute, I thought that first video was done by using that free RB ap that's in the Ap Store. Unfortunately it does not work with Voice Over, the Ipod's screnereader- and I couldn't get much use out of it. In some cases it might be nice to be able to control your dino's movements. I know I could never ferret it out alone but I would be curious to see whether or not my male RB's leg problem is truly mechanical or some sort of curruption in his software.

Could this be a sneak peek of this app? :sheep1:
The Pleo robot dinosaur makes a return from extinction.
(Credit: Aloysius Low/CNET Asia)

LAS VEGAS, US--Remember Pleo, the friendly robotic dinosaur you could train that had a personality which depended on how you took care of it?

Do you recall how the company that made it, Ugobe, went bankrupt?

Or how it got resurrected by its original manufacturer, Jetta? If you don't, feel free to check out the Wikipedia entry on this ill-fated dinosaur's history.

Well, while touring the booths of CES, we chanced upon Innvo Labs, a division of Jetta, which had three Pleos on display. The dinosaur robots have gotten improvements to battery life, sport other features such as voice recognition and have been renamed as Pleo RB (reborn).

Innvo also showed off a bunch of new food toys you can feed to your dinos. Lastly, we were informed that an app would be released soon that would let you take care of your Pleo while you're out, and also lets you sync its data to the robot when you return home.
  :sheep1:
No release date was mentioned for the app, as it's still in development, but the robot dino is currently available in China, Hong Kong and Macau for US$469.
Also found website called the Robot app. Store.its not open to " public as yet, but if you click on the Pleo you can have a peek at several apps. Supposed to be available soon. One is for face recognition! Now THAT would be cool!

It is very interesting.  I checked it out and had a bit of a read.  Anyone who wants a look here is the link to the robot app site
http://www.robotappstore.com/Pages/Robot.aspx?Model=PLEO
If you scroll to the bottom of the page all the apps are listed there to look at. :)

Wait... why is my video on there???

That site is just a scam, most of those so called 'apps' are just video's posted by others on youtube. I am familiar with four of those besides my own. (In fact the only one I haven't seen before is the Pleo with the balloon (or egg or whatever that is), although I have heard of it.) I have sent them an email requesting they remove my video.

The headstand thing is a skit (and proved to be very dangerous for the Pleo), as is the 'Plunchkins', the face recognition was a video demoing a better camera install by a user and the wii remote demo is also well known here. (Crewella posted it earlier in this thread).

That site's been around for a while and still says it's not really operating yet:

Where are all the apps?
RobotsAppStore.com is currently open for beta-testers only. Our community download and test the apps before commercial distribution. Soon, we will open the marketplace to everyone, with many apps available for each robot, in each category.

...... I think those videos might be just 'placeholders' at the moment, until their actually up and running properly?  :moose:

Most of the entries under 'Aibo' are things that come with the ERS-7 software anyway .........

They are removing my video. But they also mentioned that the Pleo section will be discontinued due to 'problematic user license agreement'.

:)  Quick heads up, guys. I followed the link to the robot app store I had mentioned in a previous post and saw that they now have skits developed by IMR, Grumpy and pleopet up on their site, available for download now and released 19/3/ . The apps are free and they give the developer credit, but I just wanted to mention this development I case you weren't aware.

I agree it is a bit rude of them, especially if they are a member here.  It would have been very easy for them to just ask.  Seems they are a bit sneaky over on that site.  well worth keeping an eye on I think.
