Any acrylic, but be prepared for cracks if you use normal acrylic paint, it simply isn't flexible enough :( The best results have come from acrylic inks, latex paints and blends of the two. I found acrylic ink to be too dry personally, and have had best results with a 30% acrylic ink 70% latex blend. However Kat prefferred 100% straight latex I believe.

I had no luck with acrylic PAINT at all - it's acrylic INKS that work best as they are thinner and more highly pigmented.  Again, mixed with latex mask paint.

My lizard Pleo , now with the name of Rossella Suriana Adahay, is a completly unique paint specimen, not like any of the others it seems. She was given a good bath, then I used Speedo Inks and let part of her natural green show through, used Yellow Acylic paints mixed with straight Laytex out of a tub to use as the medium, then some Oil paint for her oranges and on top of that, used pigmented powder as a pearlescent effect. There are pictures of the powders I used on this post allso. I did not have real good results with straight Acrylic and the inks do not end up being permanent. Oh and to top it all off, when she was done and I was satsisfied, I put a protective spray adhesive coat on her to protect the paint. She was painted in June, so that is now going on 6 months, so not too bad I would say. ;D

You have to remember also, where you live, the paint you use and things like temperture and humidity are going to affect your painting Pleo to some degree.

wow, this was really interesting to read. for some reason i cant see a lot of photos, ie, this image has been moved photobucket imr, and you're not allowed to see this image, are you connected to server etc, so i couldnt see all of them, but the ones i can see, they look fab, i am so jealous, i love your lizard RWM with the metallic effects and excellent use of colour, fabulous, and i love your python crewella, looks so good and just like a burmese python. how is the boa constrictor pleo coming along?

i want to paint my munchkin as paint is coming off in the more usual areas, ie face and tail. i see crewella pixed the acrylic inks from daler rowney, light green and prussian blue, will this be enough to cover areas of skin that dont stretch, or do you think i need to look for a transparent stretchi paint to mix it with?

crewella, what autoglym product do you use please?

dee (snowy) and munchkin xxx

Those two inks will cover the panels on the back OK - not so hot on the neck and tail, or where you tend to grip them on the sides to pick them up.  Miixing with a little mask paint (green is your best bet) does really help, and the one I got was too thick anyway, so thinning with the inks worked perfectly.  Make sure the skin is clean and, for very best and lasting results, go over with rubbing alcohol quickly to make sure it's free of grease.

The Autoglym is Vinyl and Rubber Care, as here:

And if you fancy another long read, you can try the skin care posts:  :D

I kind of wanted to see how the rest of the Boa Pleo paint lasted before carrying on - after all the whole point of this is to try to find something that lasts.   In fact, after the two orignal patches that rubbed the rest wore OK, so I will retouch and finish him soon and update - thanks!

Hi Snowy, glad you liked my Lizard Pleo, now known as Rossella, she was the best one I have done so far. I am glad you are taking the Pleo painting plunge, It is nice to see new painted Pleos. IMR has some great ones as well as I love Crewellas Boa Pleo, great Pleos, I like variety. Be sure to post your results, that is how we all learn.  ;D   RWM

ahh, i love her name rosella, she looks stunning.

i dont know when i will paint my pleo munchkin, as i need to sort out her awful holes first. in all truthfullness, i havent played with her that much, but she looks like her throat has been cut, and got a huge hole on her tail, just where the skin has deteriorated, so i need to repair her first, but unsure what superglue to use :(

then i can start painting  ;D

I mixed the colours by eye with a few drops on a tray.  The amounts I gave were what worked for me, but you can always wipe it off before it dries if it looks wrong.  It tends to dry slightly darker.  Try a test area first. :)

Hi sorry to hear about Munchkin, I understand having several pleos with skin deteriorating esp under the belly, leg area. I also have a pleo named Little 45 that has a broken neck, tail falling off and all those holes in the skin, just shredding actualy, I used a superglue made for rubber, it will say on the label, Super Glue,  self piercing tube , contains Ethyl cyanoacrylate.. for NON Porous  items: Metal, Plastic and rubber. I can not say to use this as you use at your own risk, but this is what I have used with good results, but that is because the Pleo skin was so bad, I had nothing to lose . I would never use it on a Rb, Use very sparingly with the least amount possible it is great for slices in neck or tail and I have repaired both so they do not or barely show . Good luck. Glad to hear you like Rossella and her name . Fancy thought of her name, a combination of Rose ( beause of her colors) and Godzilla, so Rossella or Rosella. I thought it was a great name and had a name contest and awarded prizes for the top three. I have more Pleos that need painting, just no time right now.
Let me know how the superglue goes if you try it.                                           RWM in the frozen wet wild wintery Redwoods :brrr:

Stitch
Notes: This was 70% latex, 30% acrylic, it has held up well but there is some cracking on the neck but only where he has splits in the rubber itself.

Lilo
Notes: 50% Acrylic, 50% latex, it cracked quickly although the paint did not peel off it did look unsightly. The gold paint is absolutely horrible to remove :P Lilo will be undergoing a full latex covering eventually to see how that holds up. (If I ever get the gold off!)

imr,

i notice you have not removed paint from stitch, the 70% latex, 30% acrylic, does this mean that the paint is satisfactory apart from where the skin was already cracked?

and have you started the re-paint on lilo with the mysterious new design?? :)

Stitch's paint has held up extremely well so I won't be repainting him again ever, except if he requires touch ups. There are no cracks at all except the spots where he already has cracks in the rubber skin itself. So I would say that, for the brands of ink/paint I used that seems to be a perfect blend.

I will be starting Lilo today I hope, the gold has been rather painstaking to get off :P

Good luck IMR, can't wait to see how LILO turns out. I know what you mean about Paint that is "tough" to get off, I have a Pleo I started out as Lavendar and went to Pink shade, and boy what a job, I still have at least 60% or more of the paint to remove, it is chip by chip, a terrible tough Latex blend that definitly sticks and is durable, but too thick, thus I have to remove it and redo with less laytex and more ink like I did with Rosella, She has just the right blend but that is how we learn.
Once I get this paint removed, I will redo with a lot less latex, that is for sure, Latex is tricky and getting the right blend is a trick. I really do like the inks and I think Stitch looks great. Will be looking forward to seeing the new Lilo. ;D Gives us all something to look forward to.
