Can I change Pleo's voice?
« on: August 21, 2010, 11:43:19 AM »

I've had a play with changing the sound files on various skits, but I wondered if there was a simple way of slightly altering the standard OS Pleo vocabulary?  For instance if I slowed the sound down slightly (or speeded it up) to change the tone - then I could tell if it was Iggy or Budge calling from another room.  That would be great, but I have a feeling it's not as simple as that - any advice would be much appreciated! I see that I can slow individual sounds from an SD card down in DinoMite, but would I have to do them all individually( :o)?

Awwwww, bless you!  I really appreciate the offer, but untrained and ignorant as I am I sort of got into these so I could learn about them, so I'd get much more of a kick out of trying to do it for myself.  However badly ...... or painfully slowly! :D

In that case the best approach would be to do this:
Extract files from the firmware update
Treating them as RAW files, import into your favourite sound editor and shift the pitch however you like
Convert back into USF files
Dump into sounds/ folder on an SD card, or put into a URF

Thank you for taking the time to explain.  Can I just confirm that you are telling me that, as suspected, I do need to do each sound individually and can't just change the overall tone for the whole sound library?

You could do it for the whole library using a script, but that'd require writing such a script.

It just so happens that I started a project like that a long time ago... Let me see if I can dig it up and finish it off :)

I'm uploading the converted files now, they are in .wav format so all you need to do is find a batch .wav file editor to adjust the pitch slightly. You could use MySkit but that would require doing every single one of the 400 sounds separately :o

Edit: And here they are, I'll see if I can find a nice efficient way to edit them :)

Thank you so much for going to all that trouble - it might take a while for me to work it out, but I'll have a play and let you know how I get on.  Thanks again, I owe you one (at least!). :D :-*

Lol Bighead, it doesn't need to be a mystery for what I look like at least, I believe there is a photo of me lurking around this forum ;)

Have you had any luck altering the files yet Crewella? I haven't been able to find any free batch converting software as yet.

Bear with me, IMR!  I'm afraid that, because I'm also using this little project as a way of learning about Pleo, it's taking me a bit of time to work through it all.  I'm about to have a look at Pleopatra.

Can you remember which version the sound files are from?  And thanks again for digging them out for me!

Those files should work in 1.0 and 1.1, I don't know about 2.0 but I can't imagine they'd be that different in terms of name.

Edit they work just fine but I have noticed a couple of sounds missing, presumably this sound list is from the 1.0, shouldn't be too hard to grab the missing sounds though. I tried a batch editor on them tonight hehe some of the results were pretty funny :) I'll have to post a blooper reel :P

Hmmm......when I tried to unzip the file onto an SD card it asked me for a password for each file?  Is it something I'm doing wrong?  Sorry to be a pain! ???

Erm, that is a new problem to me... I've never heard of that happening before. Perhaps try unzipping to your hard drive first?

Blimey - typical for me to find a complication! ???

Actually, I did download it to my hard drive first, then try to open it onto an SD card.  OK, don't panic, I'll try several different ways of doing it - I just wanted to check with you first in case you knew of a simple answer!

I'll be back ...........but I may be some time! ;)

Actually, only a handful asked for a password - most files opened onto the card fine.  Thanks! :)
