cleaning a Pleo
« on: December 17, 2008, 05:28:41 PM »

Yesterday Peeky and Penelopie had all kinds of kids playing with them. Many with runny noses. There must be a way of cleaning our little dinos without harming their skin. Any suggestions? ;D

I would be afraid to use any anti-bacterial/antiseptic type cleanser for fear of damaging the skin.  All I can suggest is warm water and time away from pleople.  Most germs won't survive on a pleo's skin for very long.

I wonder how long cold germs survive. Haven't touched my dinos since yesterday.  :(

The common cold is a virus.  Viruses are not technically living things and hence can survive indefinately on the Pleo's skin.  However, to become infected with the cold virus again you would have to get it airbourne and breathe it in.

As for bacteria, they will stop growing on Pleo's skin, but they will still sit there and wait for a kinder environment in which they can commence growth and replication again.  If you give them a nice environment, e.g. your body, then they will grow again.

Thats my biological answer.

Very good answer, but you failed to mention how best to kill/eliminate those little pesky guys without damaging the pleo's skin . . .  :P

I haven't touched my little dinos since the other day. :-\ There were some pretty drippy noses at the ice arena. Heavens knows what little bacterium is on Peeky and Penelopie.  There was plenty of sneezing too. (Not the dinos) Oh well such is life! ;)

I guess you could sterilize them by boiling them for 30 minutes . . . .  ::)

Nothing kills viruses!  They aren't alive! :P

Ah!Ah! That's why antibiotics don't help a cold. It's only given when there is a bacterial infection. Gotta! ;)

Hmmm.   Zombies aren't alive.  So maybe we can kill viruses the same way we kill zombies . . .

Back to the cleaning question.  I'm sure you could use a baby wipe.  it won't kill all the germs but it might help.
How did you make their skates.  I would love to get Sephy and Dax some.

Starfire, I took doll skates and cut off the boot part. On Peeky's skates I wanted to keep them more of a prehistoric version. I just tied them with leather shoe laces. I also used a little piece of double sided white tape on his feet which made the skates stay on better. I wouldn't have done this but his serial number has long since worn off. He would have been able to skate had he been out on the ice long enough. I was afraid it was too cold. I know we worry about the heat but boy! they were like little Popsicles while posing for their photos.
Penelopies skates were attached to her booties. Little wobbly in them.

Back to the cleaning of a Pleo. Tonight on TV I saw an add of a pocket size light that kills 99.9% of bacteria. Perhaps that would work. Degers???  ;D

I saw that light when Andy Rooney was doing his schtick on 60 Minutes!  Of course he was poking fun at it . . .   :-\

Anyway, with our luck it would kill the germs and accelerate the breakdown of the rubber at the same time   :P

I wonder if ultraviolet light would do that to rubber?  ???

I use a large UV lamp in the lab to mutate bacteria which usually kills 99.9% of my E.Coli strain in about 60 seconds exposure, but that lamp is very strong and takes 15 minutes to warm up to that amount of killing power, so I wouldn't trust the effectiveness of any posket lamp that could do that.

I blame my liver spots on my hands from all of the uv lighting to dry finger nail polish. ;) I think I'll skip that way of cleaning my little dinos. Thanks for the info. Degers. :)

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that when I use those lamps I usually wear a protective face shield and gloves to make sure I don't expose myself to any UV radiation. :)
