While I was sitting here reading the forums this morning I heard a noise over at the window. A western gull landed and balanced on the two inch ledge outside the window. This particular gull does this a lot and try’s to grab what small items he can and fly off. Well, there’s not much to grab at that window and the window was only open about three inches, so I wasn’t concerned about him, (or her. It’s much harder to tell the sex of a bird than that of a Pleo.;)) I started to hear scratching sounds and looked. The Little Blighter, (sorry for the strong language,) was trying to make off with my mahogany obsidian! The piece probably weighs about a pound and a half and he was having trouble getting his beak around it. I yelled at him but it didn’t faze him at all. I had to go over to the window and scare him off. I don’t know how many of you are familiar with obsidian, but it is volcanic glass and was used by the aboriginal peoples here to make cutting tools and arrow heads. I figure that my feathered friend probably got tired of using his beak to eat breakfast with and was trying to acquire a more refined dining implement. ???
-
Haha cheeky little devil lol, I don't think he would have flown too far but it could have been painful if he dropped it on someones head :o
-
You're right! When my better 3/4 would put bread out there the gulls would drop them. And when this gull would grab knickknacks he would let them go too. >:( >:( >:(
-
I can see a few concussions in the future :o
Just out of curiosity though isn't mahogany obsidian an oxymoron? Wooden glass stone hmmm.... i'd love to see it :)
-
Birds eat stones. This just wasn't the size the gull should be eating. Don't think his gizzard would go for this. ;D

Especially as we live on the seventh floor!

Collecting obsidian is a minor hobby of mine. The “normal” color, (colour for you, InmemoryofRomeo,;)) is black. But sometimes, there are impurities in the stone that give it different characteristics. I have Rainbow Obsidian, with different colored/coloured parallel lines running through it, Snow Flake Obsidian which is black with white blotches in it, a beautiful blue Japanese Obsidian and of course, the afore mentioned Mahogany Obsidian. The Mahogany Obsidian has reddish-brown impurities that give it its color/colour. I collected the Mahogany on the East side of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. At the time I lived on the West side of the mountains at the 2,000 foot elevation. So, all I had to do drive for six hours, cross over Tioga Pass at 9,000 feet and down to the high plains at 4,000 feet near by Lone Pine and Mono Lake. I loved that area, never got there enough, though for some it might have appeared too stark. And that area had a lot of volcanism which produced Obsidian. BTW, I also have a piece of dino coprolite, (fossilized dino do-do.) Who knows, maybe it came from Pleo's Great, great, great, great, ....great, great.....great, great, great, great Grandfather! ;D

And if the gull was successful he would need a very tall snorkel in the Bay. :D
-
Our western gulls do get people in trouble too. There's an article in the newspaper today. it reads "Grabby gull blamed for cliff-rescue chaos"."As improbable as it seems, a sea gull is the reason a Mill Valley couple became stranded on a Marin County cliff and had to be lifted off by helicopter. It started with the sea gull snatching a wallet that was being kept dry in a plastic-bag and ended an hour later with the U.S.Coast Guard rescue."
Once up the cliff the girl froze. She couldn't go up or down. I know how that feels. I have the same problem with heights.
Hope they wouldn't go after a pleo. ;D

Wow you make a six hour drive sound so casual :o, thanks for explaining about the different colors (yep I use color, too many years of American influenced spell checkers :P) I have heard of the blue and rainbow obsidian but not the others they all sound beautiful :) I have a few fossils lying around too, I have a small Trilobite, some Mososaur teeth and a Megalodon tooth, fossilized dino dung is an interesting one to tell people though (especially if you wait til they pick it up lol)
-
Hi,
Using fancyfont for my technical support, I was able to post pictures of Mahogany and Snowflake Obsidian. Thank you fancy! ;D
,
-
Glad to, finally, be ale to help someone else. You are so welcome 49er. :)
-

A friend of mine has an Allosaurus Coprolite. :o :P
-
The snowflake obsidian is very pretty :)
Lol Allosaurus dung :) But how can they tell for sure???
-
Using fancyfont for my technical support,
I'm really glad she could help, but there was a time when that statement would have been a non sequitur. ;)
Back when I made jewelry, I used to use snowflake obsidian a lot. Makes a great bead., and a pretty necklace. I think a snowflake obsidian pleo necklace might make a nice prize in our contest . . . ;)
-
I'm a slow learner, but once I have it , I have it. Now, if I can only remember that I have it. ::)
Thank you Mweed and everyone who's helped me on the computer. I had no idea that the computer could be so much fun. Before I bought Peeky and got on to Pleoworld's forum, I was about to give up the computer for good. I'm hooked now.
So everyone who reads this, let's make this forum thrive and keep pleo alive. (I love rhymes) ;D
-
Lol Allosaurus dung :) But how can they tell for sure???
Something to do with the trace fossil footprints, and they could tell that it had remains of bones in it. 0_0
I'm pretty sure that's it. And some people in my school call me Allo\Allosaurus, so we all laughed when he showed us that. XD
edit: Pretty hard to understand. In other words, they followed the fossilized footprints around where they found it and came to a bonebed with an Allosaurus. What's more, it was carnivorous dinosaur dung.
-
Neat :) I love how they can tell so much from what appears to be so little :) I wonder what, after our civilization is destroyed, a future species will be able to tell about us :)
-

Looks like you're not alone! I have wondered that for a long, long, time!

One group that I know of that's trying to leave information for future civilisations is called The Long Now Foundation. They are working on making a clock that will run unattended for 10,000 years. I've seen some of the models that they have here in San Francisco. They are also working on a library that will last for the same time frame. And they are looking for a deep underground vault, (at this point probably in Nevada.) Long Now has monthly lectures that they call Seminars About Long Term Thinking and can be listened to from their website. If you are interested in any of this, here is a link. http://www.longnow.org/ BTW the present year by their reckoning is the year 02009.
-
That's a fascinating website :) Pity they charge people to join though.
-
. . . What's more, it was carnivorous dinosaur dung.
Dinosaur dung that eats meat? Don't that beat all.
-
Hi, InmemoryofRomeo
One day my better 3/4 and I were walking around Fort Mason and I saw some interesting machinery in the window and went in to investigate. It was Long Now. I signed up for its newsletter and I get a monthly email talking about coming events. They also post summaries of lectures by email. I would love to be a paid member, but unfortunately, the 96 bucks always finds a need somewhere else. Members get priority to attend the SALT talks and if there is room after the membership arrives, they let the nonmembers in. (Just had a fire alarm go off. Building evacuated. Went down 7 flight and walked back up 7 flights when declared a false alarm.) If you would like to receive the email let me know and I will get the link if its still available and post it here.
. . . What's more, it was carnivorous dinosaur dung.
Dinosaur dung that eats meat? Don't that beat all.
I guess I'll have to tie down that dino do-do just to be sure ;)
-
I would think there's lots of fossilized dinosaur dung everywhere there were dinosaurs. Just think of what one camarasoraus left behind. ;D A sixty foot dinosaur ??? Oh my!!
-
If you would like to receive the email let me know and I will get the link if its still available and post it here.
That would be wonderful thank you :D

You'd need a pretty big pooper scooper lol ::)
-
Maybe that's what killed off all of the dinosaurs. Too much dung and methane gas on and around this planet. ;)

Don't just think of the number of flies, but the size of Jurassic flies! :o

Which means you gootta think about the size and reach of those Jurassic frogs! ;)

-
Aw thanks heaps :) I will certainly sign up :) Thank you for going to all that trouble for me :)
I think you are also forgetting about the enormous dung beetles that evolved at that time too :o Wouldn't want to step on one of those lol it'd walk off with you :P
-

Dung beetles push around little round balls of dung. Considering the possable size of a Jurassic bug, and my general round shape, My worry would be that it would roll off with me! ;)

I believe the dung beetles were about one foot long? Dunno. Just seem to recall that from somewhere.
-
Yes, but they could have been strong for their size and in their desire. And remember the lyrics of that old song
"Anyone knows an ant, cant
Move a rubber tree plant
But hes got high hopes, hes got high hopes
Hes got high apple pie, in the sky hopes
So any time your gettin low
stead of lettin go
Just remember that ant
Oops there goes another rubber tree plant." ;)
-
I'll be singing this song all day. ;)
Gosh! The high boots we would have needed back in the dinosaur age. Up to our heads. ;D
-
Shouldn't that last line be:
Ooops! There goes a dung beetle with 49er . . . ;)
-
Good grief! And who was it that said we don't have a fantasy section? This whole post is fantasy! LOL One jumps to another, and then another, and then another, and then another. Can somebody say role play Pleo?
-
Can somebody say role play Pleo?
Gee, that's easy!
role play Pleo
-
We never were any good at staying on topic. :P
-

XD! Loved it. 8)
-
Yup how we got from hungry gulls to giant dung beetle and ant ditties is a perfect example of how our minds work ROFL.
-
Hehe you all knew I had to mention it. Only because I couldn't find a way to make myself interested in dino-feces. LOL
-
Now, What on earth could be more interesting? ;)

Who could forget this moment from JP3???
-
I haven't seen JP3, but will have to see it. The plants sure had plenty of fertilizer back in the dinosaur age. ;D
-

Ah, haha, one of my fave parts in the movie! But it should've been digested. A robust dinosaur that eats fish and other dinosaurs should have *very strong* digestive juices.
LOL, I bet I just grossed some people out. :D

Maybe the phone was made by Energizer. Keeps on ringing, and ringing, and ringing, and ringing, and ringing, and ringing, and ringing, etc. :)
-
*wants to see an energizer ad where the darn bunny gets eaten by a Spinosaurus*
You should definitely see it Fancy, it is much better than the JP2 (Actually I like it more than JP1 as well)
-
Haha funny pic inmemoryofromeo!!
-
Now I'm dying to see it. I'll see if I can find it over the weekend. I loved the first one, but vaguely remember the second. Maybe I should find both. Would make a fun movie day.
-
I was able to find all three videos in one pack. It was used before but the price was right. I've watched the first movie, again. Hope to watch two and three over the weekend.
-
Nice :) I haven't seen the first one in ages... must get it out this weekend :) JP3 is still my fav though, I looove the Spino :)
-
I've seen the first movie and the third but not the second, OR the lost world. XD
-
The lost world is the second one :)
-
I'm going to try to watch Lost World today. Still not sure if I've seen it. I know I haven't seen JP3.
-
I thought the lost world kinda didn't live up to the hype of the first movie. Although there was definitely some improvements in the animatronics and the cgi.
-
Doesn't JP3 pick up where Lost World (JP2) left off?
-
Well not really, its a different island, different dinosaurs, and some different people.
This big fella's in it...
(http://images.google.com.au/url?source=imgres&ct=img&q=http://www.achetudoeregiao.com.br/ANIMAIS/gif_animal/SPINOSAURUS.jpg&usg=AFQjCNEYPxFJLQnoykqkLLiRkUkP9nh1iA)
-
I don't think this is going to be one friendly dino!!
-
Well I won't give too much away but for Mr T-Rex he's a real pain in the neck ;)
-
I watched JP3 this morning. Lesson to be learned. Never steel eggs from a raptor's nest. ;) EEKK!! Fantastic movie! Now I understand about the the portable phone ending up in the dung. good old indestructible phones. ;D
-
Yeah right, nothing like they used to make them. Nowadays, you have to get a new phone every six months!! Arggh, I hate that!
-
I don't know, I've had my phone for two years now (its a motorazr maxx V6) its still going strong. My sister had one of those old phones though lol she had it for six years :) Then she flushed it in the toilet :-\ (Accidentally) Lol.
-
Well, I suppose that's something. I've had my phone for a little over a year now, and I'm shocked! Motorola something or another. It looks like an updated krazr.
-
I won't even ask how she ended up flushing the phone down the toilet! :-X
-
Lol, she had it sitting up on the cistern while she was cleaning, it was on ring and vibrate, someone rang and it vibrated right off the cistern and into the bowl... I thought it was hilarious pity she didn't agree with me :P
With the newer phones though you get what you pay for I think, my dad always buys the cheap phones and they never last long, my phone cost $300. Although to tell the truth I only bought it because it has an MP3/4 player, plays vids, has fast internet, video calling and a good camera lol I never ring anyone on it but portable multimedia is handy. It saves me from having to carry an MP3, MP4 and MP5 player and my camera all the time :P
-

Is it still ringing? :D
-
Maybe it is still ringing out in the ocean somewhere. ;D
-
Hmm so thats what that bubbly sound was, the fish must have answered...
-
If so, the fish need to be careful. The bubbles might give them away and they might be eaten buy a Gull! :D
-

Wow!!! We might just get back on topic! ;) Alas, gucci_boi's plumbing leads to the Atlantic. So it wouldn't be eaten by a "western" gull. Unless the gull was on vacation, visiting Orlando's Sea World . . . ;)
Which makes me wonder where Siren has been these lase few months . . .
Ooop! Getting off -topic again! :P

Of course the bubbles in the above example would have been off of Australia, and I wouldn't hazzard a guess where gucci_boi's plumbing goes, but I wouldn't put it past our "Western Gulls" to go to Sea World if they could figure out how to catch a ride on a truck or some RV to Florida just so they could sample some of the fine "buffet tables" they might encounter at that amusement park. :D
-
Hey hey hey hey hey!!!!! What's all this about me??? Hehe, and how many times do I have to tell you- we are not a big amusement park!! Sure we have more amusement parks than I can count, sure every Floridian is within 60 mi. of the beach. But no matter what, we are just as southern as any other southern states. Hehe, Siren probably knows more about the tourists than I do, with her living in Orlando. I saw her on Youtube doing a lot of talking with her webcam. I used to live in St.Petersburg/Clearwater (Close to Tampa, and if you still don't know, West-Central Florida) Our water out here is The Gulf Of Mexico.
And BTW, anytime you go out to an amusement park, it's guaranteed you'll end up with either a stinkin SEAgull or a stinkin squirrel walkin right up to you and having you hand feed it your lunch!
-
Were any of them Western Gulls?
-
Hehe IDK!! We have TONS of seagulls here, but that's all I've ever heard them as....
http://dunedindailyphoto.blogspot.com/2008/10/dunedin-florida-seagulls-dont-need-jet.html
(Ironiacally The city of Dunedin was just north of where I was living about a year ago...)

I checked my books to see what gull was in the picture. At first I thought it was a Bonaparte's Gull, but it didn't look quite right. I finally decided that it was a Laughing Gull. I should have known immediately that it wasn't Bonaparte's. The Bonaparte's Gull always tucks its right wing into its chest feathers. ;)
-
Wester, Laughing, Bonaparte's . . . I don't know the difference. But all I can think of is that line from Nemo . . .
"Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine! . . . "
-
I looove Finding Nemo :)
(My fav TV host is in it, Rove Mc Manus, he's a poo eating crab at the end of it lol.)
Those are our gulls lol, here they are just called common gulls (for obvious reasons) in fact they are so common that our Cricketers each year manage to knock an estimated 86 of them out of the skies :o
-

Your Cricketers must have good strong arms and keen eyes. BTW, how many players and spectators do they manage to hit? ;)
-
I wasn't sure what the game of cricket was. According to my research the ball can go fast as 90 miles an hour. Ouch!!!
-
Your Cricketers must have good strong arms and keen eyes. BTW, how many players and spectators do they manage to hit?
The spectators are well away from the fast balls lol and the players are trained to duck. But the Seagulls wander everywhere picking up scraps and whatnot so they get clobbered on a regular basis :P
I wasn't sure what the game of cricket was.
You don't have cricket ??? :o
-
I've never seen a game. :-[ When You first mentioned cricket I was thinking of croquet. I wondered how that would clobber a seagull. Big differance of games. ;D
-
LOL!!! Well maybe if the seagull was on the ground... with its ears plugged... and its back to the ball... and the sun was in its eyes... LOL.
-
You don't have cricket ??? :o
Another example of how uncivilized we Americans are. But a lot of us have heard of the saying, "That's just not Cricket!" Even if we don't know what cricket is. :D
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9STtcwo0xE
-
So what part of Australia is Kansas in? ???
-
49er, I was wondering the same thing. ??? :-[ I know what a bat and a ball and I certainly know what bowling is, but put them together and I have never seen a cricket game in my life.
Come to this forum and learn. ;)
-
In trying to keep to the topic, (hehehe :D) around the time that gold was found in California, California Gulls flew to Utah and ate all the crickets there. Maybe that's why we don't play Cricket in the US.;)
-
I'm not sure about Kansas, but there is a Texas in Queensland :)
In trying to keep to the topic, (hehehe Cheesy) around the time that gold was found in California, California Gulls flew to Utah and ate all the crickets there. Maybe that's why we don't play Cricket in the US.Wink
If that's on topic lol I'd hate to see off-topic :P Would it matter if the gulls ate all the crickets? I'm not sure about there but here they don't play any significant environmental function, just food for other animals.
Edit: Oh there is a Kansas in Sydney :)
-
I'm not sure about Kansas, but there is a Texas in Queensland :)
Edit: Oh there is a Kansas in Sydney :)
I was just curious, we have a state named Kansas. But it's famous for flat, wheat, tornadoes and the wizard of Oz, not cricket. ???
-
49er couldn'ta said it better 'bout ole kansas. haha
As far as this cricket game, it's rather peculiar. I don't quite get it, though. Silly me, I'm just an American. No vegemite, no cricket!! :P :P :P
-
Whats to get lol, the batter tries to hit the ball as far away as possible without having their wickets/stumps knocked down in the meantime. After each hit the batter has to run to the other end of the pitch (and possibly back again) before the other team fetches the ball and tries to knock over their wickets/stumps before they get there.
The bowler tries his hardest to bowl a ball the batter can't hit.
Fielders try to retrieve the ball as fast as possible to stop the batter getting too many runs. If they catch the ball on the full it is an instant out for the batter.
Then the teams swap over and it all starts again...
Then of course you have the trickier things like ducks, no balls, wides, sixes, fours, run outs, umpires, ashes, tests, one dayers...
-
Why is cricket called cricket? it should be called Grasshopper. ;)
-
DOn't forget "overs" IMR :)
-
Lols it is probably confusing enough without the overs... but an over is six balls bowled excluding wides and no balls :)
-
Bloody #$&%!! I still don't get it! Why couldn't you just use good old fashioned American Baseball or American Football. Those, hehe I comprehend! This sport that's named after an annoying insect, I don't get it. But as long as you have fun!
-
Actually I can't stand the game :-[ I think its so boring :P Give me AFL (Australian Football League, absolutely nothing like American football or soccer) any day ;D
-
Aye dios mio. I'm not much of a sports fan. :-[ (I did do cheerleading in high school though, if that counts for anything...)
-
Lol that would be fun :) We didn't have cheerleaders at my high school... but then we didn't have any sports teams either... But then it was only a small school, 300 students max :)
I'm not that keen on sports either, but I do like the horse racing, not that I bet, I just love admiring those gorgeous horses :)
-
Cheerleading has sure evolved over the years. There's competitions on TV. I'd hate to be at the top of the pyramid. Too high up for me. Great to watch, though. ;)
-
Maybe there is cricket in the Kansas of the US after all.??? It appears there are 750 teams here according to this article. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/9352242/Ramirez-takes-a-swing-at-cricket. InmemoryofRomeo, if you came here you could become equally bored. Tho' I'm sure we have many other boring sports. (I know I'm about to make enemies here, but,) for me the most boring sport is a toss up between watching paint dry and golf! :D
-
I'd rather watch the paint dry. At least there's enthusiasm there.
-
Yup paint drying is waaaay more exciting than golf. :) Unless its mini golf ;)
