wondering why this bird is doing..?

Walking the dunes of the beach can show you some strange and sometimes sad things. This time it is a bird, Seagull it appears, that is buried in the sand with part of it's wings and head sticking up. Rossella can't figure out what this guy is doing, and it is too hard to try and explain...actually I have no good explanation that would help her. Who knows what happened to this guy, did he get sick, did he drown, or get caught in a wave.....seems brids are on the beach like this a lot. In one day I saw a total of five or six dead gulls, with no explanation. Worse was the day there was a huge sick and dying Sea lion, which we came within five feet of. The next day he was there and had indeed died, so sad to see something like that...
