I had a science teacher that had a pet tarantula. He said that it didn't bite. I was comfortable enough to have it walk up my arm. I was sure a lot braver a long time ago. Now, if an itty bitty spider is on me, I freak out. I guess I'll have to think of the next spider on me as a pet. ;D

Yuck-y! I hate all bugs, they are rather frightening aren't they? Here in Florida, we get all sorts of bugs! The worse part is, even if you keep your house sprayed, it is inevitable to have spiders and -shudders- roaches always in your house.

My dad came over to our house tonight and was very sad. He told me Spike his pet spider that has been in his bathroom for over two weeks got whacked by the lady cleaning his apartment. The other lady knew about it but forgot to tell her partner. RIP Spike :(
Guess I'll try to find him a new spider tomorrow. Rain is coming. Should be easy.

I would pick up and play with tarantulas all the time back home.  It was hard to describe the feeling of the eight soft little feet and that they weighed almost nothing at all.  I remember one time on I had a tarantula on my bare arm and something startled and it ran to the underside of my arm without falling off!  Amazing!  I was always laissez-faire with the critters that found their way into my house.  I especially let the Alligator Lizard he was OK to slink about, but it was his responsibility to keep from under my feet.  Now that I live in San Francisco, all I have to deal with are mice and cockroaches. :P  But I won't talk about icky things like politics in this forum. ;)

A tarantula costume for a pleo would be cute for Halloween. Pleo would be soft, but I don't think too cuddly. ;D

Poor Spike :(

Henry got eaten :o I found his shell of a body yesterday. Apparently his date with Henrietta didn't go too well, so now I have a female huntsman on my wall but she's going to have to go, don't want a whole bunch of baby spiders in the house :o

My brother would throw bugs into the webs of Black Widow spiders that were on the side of the house.  Once he put one in a jar and it spun a little orbed nursery and when the time came lots of teeny-weeny light brown spiders came out.  BTW, have any of you walked into a Black Widow's web?  They are loose single strands for the most part, and I remember walking into one and bouncing off. :o

Spiders webs have a tensile strength greater than any other substance known including (if it were the same size of course) steel.

Yah, females often eat males. Happens with humans, too.  ;)

No.  If he got eaten, the date went well.  The female eats the male as part of or after mating.   In some species, it is the female biting the head off of the male that causes him to release the sperm.

That mating practice is what gave the Black Widow the name of "Widow."  The Preying Mantis is famous for its post mating snacks also. ::)

Lolz yes praying mantises have a dark side that not many people know about lol.

I did a little research today, Huntsman are not one of those that NEED to kill their partners nevertheless it is very common. Male Huntsman also spin a little chastity belt for their females while they are mating so no other male can mate with her :o

So I guess they must have evolved in the European middle ages and then migrated with the European explorers just like the English Sparrow did.;)

I know praying mantis babies when they hatch will eat each other if they do not get dispersed quickly enough.

The animal kingdom is full of strange things  :o

Look at sharks for example, they are the only known animals that practice inter-uterine cannibalism. Baby sharks of some species will actually eat each other BEFORE they are born :o

LOL! Yesterday when I came downstairs to prepare for the recital, I asked my mom how I looked, and the posed for her. And then Patrick made a sound that sounded like, "Ooooh!"

It was so funny! ;)
