Since I am not an technically-minded person and more of a collector of robots, there are several things about my little robotic pets that I am completely ignorant about. One of them is temperature and its effect on batteries. With the colder weather months closing in fast, some of my robots suffer from unusually fast battery depletion. This has been observed over a number of years so it’s not something new. While this doesn’t seem to be a problem for my pleos, it happens to all four of my aibos.
I can charge them all, leave them on their unplugged stations for about fourteen hours and then play with them the following day only to find their batteries are completely flat. At first I thought maybe it was because their batteries were of the older nickel-hydride variety but that isn’t true. They are lithium ion like the pleo batteries. Hmmmm.
The pleos- thankfully- don’t seem to have this problem. They go on humming even when my room gets down to forty degrees. While I am grateful they aren’t affected, I am a little confused. Oh well. Perhaps someone might be able to shed some light on this for me.
The only thing I can think of is that perhaps it’s a slight difference in temperature. The pleos reside on a dresser about three feet off the ground while the aibos live on the floor on their stations. Sorry for the non-pleo topic but it is an honest query that I have not yet found an answer for. I promise to hand the keyboard back over to our stars, or else talk about something relevant in my next blog entry.
