Any I-Cybie owners here?
« on: March 13, 2013, 03:14:52 PM »

I was surfing around eBay, trying to find a robopet I could afford. After a little digging, I found the I-Cybie. Read a bit about it on Wikipedia, but the article didn't give me enough information. What are I-Cybies like? Any information would be appreciated.

IMR has a couple and there are a few others on the forum who either own them or have done in the past so it shouldn't be long before someone comes here and can tell you all about them.  In the mean time here are some old posts you can check out about them :)

Wow - I think Kat pretty much has it covered!  ;D

I love the i-Cybies.  Not as autonomous as a Pleo, but they do wander about a bit and the tricks are cool.  For the money, especially, they are excellent.  Especially the later models with the walk-up charger. :)

The I-cybies are outstanding for their price. I am the proud owner of Max and Zenni. However they are robots, there is no illusion of life. Not much personality at all, they walk around, go through very limited responses, have a few nice tricks controlled via remote and can display happy, sad and anger (if not enough space is detected to move around).

They do have voice commands, I've never tried it though, should do that one day. You can 'pet' them via buttons and they have pretty basic obstacle detection. They don't recognize faces, or respond the the environment much. But for the price you can't expect miracles.

The walk up chargers take up a lot of room, they work reasonably well. Max and Zenni can usually find theirs and dock after an age of fiddling and adjusting lol.

I found this a while ago. It's quite interesting:

You can usually get them at a good price on e-bay and there is someone selling new batteries and chargers if needed.  I bought a new battery which works.  I have tried the voice commands but can only get him to recognise a couple for some reason.  Perhaps I find it difficult to keep the same intonation each time.

I got an I-Cybie when they first came out. They are fun to watch but they aren't very lifelike. I think I've just reached a point where I'm more interested in more lifelike robotic pets than ones that are more mechanical in nature. I'm more interested in animatronic creatures than straight up robotic looking ones. That's why despite having four Aibos I still prefer Furby. I like Pleo for the same reasons I like Furby. Instead of making a machine-like thing Furby and Pleo seek to replicate biological creatures. Creatures you can't find at a pet shop At that. They appeal to the part of me that grew up wanting to make monsters for movies.
I-Cybie's not bad, especially if you can get one cheap and you don't mind a more robotic pet. But if you've already experienced Pleo I don't know how impressive I-Cybie would be.

Hmm. I may get one, I may not. Interesting-sounding, cheaper than Pleo (which my grandmother still insists is too expensive), but not very lifelike. I'll either get one of those, or a Little Inu.
