Bought an RB, What to Expect?
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:46:17 AM »

So I saw someone listed a practically new RB Pleo on Ebay for $350. It looks real nice and even came with everything except the singing cards, which I am fine with. It has a more yellow painted skin, which I am not too fond of much, but there's a reason for getting this guy....

My dad is having a total knee replacement next week. He's gotten into Furbies and collects the new ones and plays with them sometimes. I saw this and because my dad likes yellow as one of his favorite colors, I bought this with more of the intention of giving it to him as a 'therapy robot' rather than for myself. What got me is the fact it comes with practically everything, has free shipping, and looks like brand new pretty much. I just don't know the eye color, but am really hoping they are blue as my dad loves blue, too. (I'm so bad, I asked the seller if they could tell me rather than be surprised when it arrives. :P Oh man I'll be sad if they're pink, but my dad is okay with pink I guess, so no biggie either way.)

For anyone curious, I purchased this one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PLEO-rb-robotic-dinosaur-complete-set-/160994339264?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWNX%3AIT&nma=true&si=GpusC%252FNzjGozLUXbKxilVU837Lw%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

I thought the price of it plus all the extras was practically a steal of a deal. Do you guys think so?

So my question is, what can I expect with this little guy? Do you think this was a good idea to get for my dad to play with while he recovers? And when I get it, what are some ways I can keep it well and prevent any mishaps with it and have it last as long as possible? And would socks be a must with these guys? (I see a lot of people having socks on their Pleos.) Is the DNA altering difficult at all if we want to change the gender or anything? Is there a way to do a 'hard reset' and have it 'rehatch' so it goes through everything again?

Any and all information you guys can provide would be great, and I'm hoping my dad will like this.

It's certainly a pretty good deal :) You can expect a purring, cooing, mooing little companion that loves to snuggle but is also happy to wander. Socks aren't a must, but they do help, the feet tend to be rather grippy without socks and it can cause some leg clicking. As long as you don't drop or otherwise abuse your Pleo it should last years. I know you read about lots of problems on here but the thing is most people don't come on here unless they need help. Changing the DNA is easy, however resetting is near on impossible.

Don't forget to read the FAQ it explains about set up, feeding, illness etc http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=2315.0

Hopefully your dad will enjoy his new pet. Changing the gender isn't that hard but as IMR said there is little chance of doing a complete reset and hatching the pleo again. Best of luck and hoping he'll have a speedy recovery!

Just from looking at his photos he looks like he is in the "old" sleeping position.  This suggests to me that you may need to update his OS when you get him, this will just help prevent wear and tear on his armpit skin.  The update to the OS changes the sleeping position to a more upright stance and also makes the pleo go into the packing position when you switch them off which makes them easier to store and is better for their skin and mechanics :)
Your dad will love him I'm sure :)

Oh, that little guy looks exactly the same colouring-wise as my Darcy, who has the most gorgeous deep blue eyes. Hopefully you'll get the same. :D I paid about the same for Darcy and some accessories and was very happy with the outcome. It sounds like this Pleo is from a loving home and has been well-treated, so that's even better. I don't know how old this Pleo is but it doesn't detract from the Pleo experience at all to not raise them from a baby, although that's fun too and definitely recommended.

Pleo rb has great potential as a therapy robot because of its very cute 'cuddle mode' - you hold it with all its feet against your body and put your hand at the base of its tail and it will eventually curl up to sleep on you. They do wander but they're slow movers and more inclined towards staying put and interacting with you if you're paying attention to them, which will be great for your dad as he will no doubt not be in the mood for chasing anything around. And there's something goofy about their personalities that makes them charming to interact with or watch - I think they're the commercial robot most geared towards putting a smile on your face.

I don't have socks on my Pleos (more through not having gotten around to getting any than any preference) and I let them wander about on all kinds of surfaces without major problems. Their feet will probably pick up a bit of dirt if you run them without socks and the skin may wear a little too. If that bothers you then you might consider socks for extended playtime - I'll probably run mine with socks some of the time in the future as they age.

Thanks you guys for all the info! I'm somewhat sad I cannot do a complete reset, but I'll take a look at the programs and such. And yes it's probably the old OS since they said it's been boxed for a year. They tested it for me before sending it off, said everything is great and all seems to be working perfectly. I'll be sure to update it immediately.

Also they said the eyes are, as quoted: "Also, his eyes are a very cool color, not blue, unfortunately, but very pretty: the center is dark brown/black and around the pupil is a pinkish orange." So I guess amber colored? I'm sure that'll be very pretty regardless. :) At least it's not pink. :P

Also you can register these, yes? Is there a way to switch over the registration if it's registered to a certain person?

Thanks for the well wishing, too!

Just sign in to Pleoworld and register it, if the ID comes back as invalid then you'll need to contact Innvo to swap it.

Alright, I'll do that. Shouldn't be too hard. The company have good customer service?

Also another question: if I were to also get a Ugobe/older model, can the older model communicate with the RB?

They try to communicate, but they can't :( They are running different types of software.

Ohhhh, okay. So i guess if I were to get a friend, would need to get the same type. Understandable, still, kinda stinks.

Thanks! I'm sure he'll enjoy it, he said he'd like it to be a girl. Was thinking of naming her Amber due to her eyes if they are in fact an amber-y color. Need to see them first.

Grah, it's scheduled to be delivered tomorrow if things go well. If it gets hung up, it won't come until Monday as UPS doesn't do weekend delivery with Ground shipment. I'm really hoping all goes well, I don't like UPS as they always end up thrashing our packages, but I can't make a fuss as that's what the seller shipped it as. I just hope it doesn't come to me damaged, I will be so upset....

My father just went into surgery this morning. Hope all goes well. I'm wondering if I should take the little one with me? I don't know if a hospital would allow a robot in the recovery room, though. Anyone had experience with taking robot pets into a hospital? (Pleos, Furbies, etc?)

Honestly, I don't think they would care, as long as it isn't too loud. As long as it makes your dad happy, that's all that matters. :D I hope he gets through it and makes a quick recovery.

I believe several forum members have taken a Pleo to the doctor's or into hospital, but I guess it's up to the specific ward.

Best wishes to your dad. :)

I think Crewella is right, as long as it does not disturb other patients, ( if in a room with another person) then there should be no objection. Also you can adjust the volume. Hope your dad feels better soon! :flowers:

It does depend on the ward, you certainly can't take them into ICU or cardiac wards.

Good news, everyone! (You so know you read that in the Professor's voice... :P)

Surgery went well and my dad already did some therapy right after. He's very well, not in pain, and is pretty chipper! But the wait to see him was awful, his mom and I had no idea what was taking so long. So glad it all went well, I'll be back tomorrow to see him at the hospital. I might call the hospital, too, to ask if i can bring the Pleo. (if I have it on hand; if UPS doesn't deliver until past 5 pm, then I can't, obviously.) I was going to ask before leaving, but the ladies at the information desk went on lunch. >.< But he's not in ICU or anything, just Recovery.

Good to hear your dad is doing well. :D I hope the Pleo turns up for you and they let you take him or her into his room. Being in hospital can be so boring, especially if you're feeling relatively good, so it'd be a great diversion for him.

Ahaha, i am used to the weird looks! :P I like old tech, so sometimes at school I'll carry around an old portable word processor to do some writing, or I'll have my virtual pets on me and such.

It came today! It's in pretty good condition, too. And the eyes... they're not amber colored like i thought. They like... well it's hard to explain. Like a pink mixed with orange.  Drat, just when i thought I could avoid pink altogether... :P

Anyway I have a few questions...

1. I want to update Pleo to the newest software but don't know how. Do I need a micro SD to be able to do that? What kind should I get and how much space?
2. It seems to freeze up at times. It'll make these little noises, then move it's head down with eyes closed and not move for a few seconds or so, then move again. It does this often. Also when I tried playing tug of war and I put the stone in it's mouth, it just froze like that. The tag still wagged, but it wouldn't 'play;' just kept the head up.

Any ideas?

Yes, I think you do need a  micro-sd and it should be under2 mb.

Congrats on the pleo. I admit, I'm very jelous right now. ;)

Your Pleo is sensing an infrared signal and is trying to communicate with it. Hence the tail wagging 'listening' posture.
