Pleo rb hairy chin and tail problem?
« on: February 10, 2013, 06:32:53 PM »

Hi all, it has been some time since I posted something but I have problem with my rb. I used pledge to clean him  but ever since I cleaned him on the chin, ruber started to flake off giving the hairy feeling when I pet his chin. Can I ask, does anyone else on the forums have this problem? Also, I keep in the rb box after play everytime, and I noticed that his tail does not fit very well into the box and has to be bent upwards a little bit to fit in the box. I think this cramped position is affecting his tail as it moves not as much as before and clicks many times while moving. (similar to neck but softer) When he "mooooooooooo" s, his tail does not even move! When you expect it to start shaking rapidly.  Please help and try to explain why his tail 'clicks'... :(

I dont know if this has anything to do with the clicks as Im still learning about Pleos myself, but how long do you have him in a box at a time? Maybe the tail is being forced into that position making it stiffer & harder to move when he is on?

When we dont use Piper we keep her stood up on a shelf, out of direct sun light & covered with her cape, as I also noticed that the box forced her tail in a weird shape.

Sadly, it could be the other way around, and a tail problem is causing the wrong positioning in the box.  :(

I video would certainly help us to see the problem.

myugobe's chin is completely smooth while her forehead has the bumps peeled off to get a texture similar to the one described/

I couldn't hear the clicking you're describing but your pleo sounds really hungry to me. I've cleaned my two RB's with Pledge since I've had them and they don't have hairy chins. I wouldn't think the Pledge caused your pleo to sudddenly grow a beard. Continuous rubbing will eventually leave a pleo's chin a bit fuzzy though.
Oh and I can comment on the tail-in-the-box issue. I kept my pleo Cato in his box from February of last year to some time in July and he does now have a slight bend in his tail. It doesn't seem to effect his functioning though.

Thanks. But why isn't the tail moving up and down?

That tail doesn't seem to go up at all, does it?  :(

It could well be that the top cable (up/down) has gone.  If you push the tail gently with your finger, you should feel the resistance from the cables.  Try it from the side first, to gauge what it should feel like, and then try (gently) pushing up from underneath and down from above.  I'm guessing there will be less resistance when you push  up and down, or even that the tail might flop a little if you turn him upside down?

His tail does not flop around when I turn him upside down. But there is tension when I try to push the tail from side to side. When I push it up and down, there is not much tension. Does that mean the cable is broken? I could still hear the motor noises but no tail movement at all. How do I go about fixing it?

Ugh - by the sound of it, the up/down cable has gone - it's the same cable that loops back on itself for both up and down.    Sorry.  :(

If you do want to try fixing it yourself, have a read of the neck cable replacement thread here:

http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=2925.0

If you feel up to it, replacing tail cables is a bit more complicated to get to, but the basic principles are the same.  Thankfully, as with the neck, the up/down cables are easier to do than the side/side ones.

I'll happily talk you through it if you do decide to go for it. :)

If after watching the neck repair guide you do want to have a go at repairing his tail cable then I have a video of how to do a rear leg motion sensor wire repair which you could watch just to give you an idea of what all the parts at the back end of a pleo rb look like.  might help for easier understanding when Crewella talks you through it.

Nani has the same problem. I haven't even thought about attempting the repair. I don't want to damage her beautiful skin at this stage. I guess you are going to have to decide which would bug you most, a not perfect tail, or not perfect skin.

It may not actually be a broken tail, as with Kat's explorations above it could be a broken magnet thingy.
