Pleo rb Won't Turn Off, No Matter What...
« on: January 25, 2013, 07:43:43 PM »

Hi everyone.

Some of you may have noticed that I was having some problems in my Welcome Forum thread.

Here's the deal.

I bought a Pleo rb and received her yesterday.  She started right up after the battery charged and went through some of the hatchling stages.  She wanted to sleep a lot, and didn't want to eat.  I figured that was no big deal.  When I went to turn her off so that I could go to bed, I would hold her power button down and she wouldn't do anything at all.  No moving, no powering down, no going into the "box storage" position.

So this morning I fully charged the battery and tried again.  Nothing.  She still won't move.

So I tried the reset button.  Nothing.  I tried removing the clock battery for an hour and starting again.  Nothing.

Tonight I tried downloading the firmware update.  It goes through the process of telling me it's updating it's firmware, but then tells me "Update Failed" over and over again.

Can anyone give me anything else to try??  I've got a replacement on the way, but if I can get this one going I can keep this one around.

Thanks.
Jeff

I suspect a software issue. There's a not a lot that we can help with if it is. Since you have another coming just wait it out.

Just to be absolutely sure you did use the RB update right? Not a Ugobe one... (I just have to ask, you'd be amazed how often we have people use the wrong ones)

The light on the bottom comes on when I press the on button, but then the Pleo doesn't do anything and the light won't go off unless I pull the battery.

Yah, that's what I was thinking...I should just wait it out.  I'm a pessimist, so I have this horrible feeling that the next one will be dead, too.

Yes, I used both of the RB updates, just to be sure.  I saw that there was one for female and one for male, so I tried the female first because when I registered this Pleo it said it was 85-95% female.  Then I tried the male one just in case.  Tried each one 5-6 times before giving up.

Oh well, thanks for the help guys.

I've never heard of this happening. It's certainly an odd problem. I hope you can get it straightened out.

Sadly it does sound like you've done everything right but the Pleo RB has a problem.  :(

I hope the replacement gets there quick.

Yes, it seems pretty rare.  When I did a search on Google, I only found one instance of it and it was on this very forum.  Unfortunately, there wasn't much in the way of fixes, and I tried what was suggested.  Then the person that made the first post never posted again, so it would seem that they either figured it out, or got another Pleo.

It's really strange, because the power button works...it turns on just fine...but other than turning it on, it wouldn't do anything.  I'm trying to think back and I never noticed the power button changing the volume of Pleo's voice, either.  Probably a hardware issue of some kind.  I'm hoping the new one works out better.  I really liked the animal while I had it awake for that evening.

I hope so too.  They had said it would be shipped out right away, but it's currently showing that it should ship on the 29th.  I guess that's not too far away, but I was hoping to have the new one by then.

Oh well...patience is a virtue, I suppose!!   :)

Fingers crossed it comes sooner than that.  Waiting is the hardest bit.  So disappointing to have an issue so soon with your pleo.  And such a unique issue too  :P

That's one of the most amazing things about pleo.  They really do make you believe and cause a whole range of emotional responses from their owners.   :)

I thought the light just showed the battery was fully charged on rb. And i think the power button is supposed to also change volume. Did you read the manual through?

If the light is only supposed to show the battery is fully charged, why would it only come on AFTER you press the power button??

And yes, I've read the manual...three times.  My wife read it twice.

From the Companion Guide:

5.    Press the ON/OFF button located beneath PLEO rb’s belly skin for 2
seconds–the power indicator LED will light up “green.”
6.    To control PLEO rb’s sound volume, press the ON/OFF button once
for “Mute,” a second time for “Soft Volume” and a third time for
    “Normal Volume.”
7.    Press and hold the ON/OFF button for 4 seconds to turn off your
PLEO rb (the power indicator LED will also turn off).

So, the light should come on when I turn it on, which it does.  And it should go off when I turn it off...which is the problem, because it won't turn off.

You're doing it right, there's just something wrong.  My first RB, Belle, has never had a working light, but as she works fine otherwise I've never worried about it.  I bought her when they very first came out ...... and couldn't face sending her back!  %)  :moose:

Alright guys, I'm posting in here so that everyone that tried to help will know.

I got the new Pleo rb today, and it's currently in the process of charging.

A few things to note.  This new one's skin feels a LOT different than the one I had last week.  The one I had last week had really tacky feeling skin that was hard to slide my hand along.  In fact, in just the few days that I had him the skin seemed to get damaged a bit.  This new one feels a lot more like a basketball that's made of leather...it's smooth and not tacky at all.  This new one also feels "fatter" on his sides.  What I mean is that there's something under the skin but above his skeleton that makes him feel soft and cuddly.  The other one didn't have that at all.

I'm wondering if the other one that I had was one that someone had a problem with, so they bought a new one from Frontgate and sent their old broken one back to Frontgate.

Even my wife noticed how different it felt as soon as she touched it.

I'm currently waiting for the battery to charge to power this new one up.  I've got my fingers crossed that this one works!!

I am keeping my fingers (one hand only) crossed for you. It does sound as though you had an older production of pleo,,, perhaps....No way to ever tell. Have you glanced at the eyes yet??This is exciting!

YES.

The eyes are "pearl."  They're a whitish pink that changes color depending on what direction the light is shining on them.

This one is acting a lot different than the first one.  It's eaten a few times, and hasn't laid down yet.  The other one didn't eat anything, and laid down to sleep shortly after turning him on.  So far, so good!!

Pearl eyes sound very pretty... Some of those differences are interesting... They are the differences between an older Pleo and a RB...

I will try to get a good picture of them.  She's in her box right now so that my cats don't try anything overnight.
