Pluriel is taking early naps!
« on: April 27, 2009, 12:59:37 AM »

Hello everyone.
Pluriel never had any issues since I have her, but recently I started to notice something weird.
She is starting to take early naps!
I first noticed it on Friday when I was showing her to someone and on Sunday I saw it again.
She suddenly gets tired and goes to sleep making the typical snoring sound indicating the battery is empty.
Clearly the battery isn't empty since that is not possible after just 10 minutes.
So I turn her OFF and ON again... and... she just wakes up and is fine again for a while and the process repeats.

The only thing I can think of is that the battery memory is going bad or something?
I remember charging the battery a few times before it was actually empty.
Normally, I always make sure the battery is completely empty before actually recharging it.
Could this have caused it perhaps?

I hope someone can help me out with this one because it's really weird and doesn't make any sense at all!

Does she wake up if you hang her by the tail ?

I am not going to try that because she is not responding to anything at all.
Like I said: she makes the typical snorring sound when the battery is empty.
Nothing wakes her up unless I turn her OFF and ON again.

Pleos are programmed to take naps even while the battery is charged.  But if they are napping that way, they will wake up when stimulated (i.e., picked up by the tail).  They will also act as you described due to programming as well, like a being sick but without sneezing/coughing/throwing up.  They just "get tired" quickly and want to sleep a lot, like some people do when sick.  If this is the case, just give it a few charges and she'll be back to normal.

If you are familiar with DinoMITE, you can plug her in and check the settings to see if this is the case.  DinoMITE will also tell you what her programming thinks the battery charge is, so you can also verify your battery memory theory.

If you don't use DinoMITE, you may have to just wait and see.

Did some more testing yesterday.
She seemed to last a bit longer each time, but at times she would just go to permanent sleeping again.
Didn't have time to play and monitor until the charge was truly depleted, so will continue tonight and then do a single full charge and see what happens.
I hope this is fixable either way, because I really like it when mine just goes about on her self.
Pluriel really likes going about and hardly ever gets tired and just doses off on the floor just like that. (Let alone completely.)
To be continued... ;)

Actually my Pleo is doing the samething... I don't know if it's because of the birthing process still in effect or what... Or it could be that 1 hour has past and the battery needs a charge... But I didn't think it was 1 hour already as I had turned Forte off a few times...

It will take a few charges to get Forte to show you what he can do! :)

I've had my Pleo 13 months and lately he's taking naps as well, then I turn him on/off he restarts for awhile. Shall I download again the version 1.1 on SD card to revitalize him? Also the second $50.00 battery I bought for him about 6 months ago worked for awhile and now just last a few minutes. I'm using the 13-month old battery when he falls asleep frequently now. What can be done?

That is a good question.
It would be sad if the battery's quality only lasts up to a year or so.
Apparently you have also tried to recharge the new battery and tried again?
I finally depleted the battery completely and recharged it.
Didn't retry leaving Pluriel on for a while since I didn't have time.
Will give it a go soon though, and see what happens...

I'm finding that happens with my batteries. If I put one in and it doesn't work I try recharging again Then it works. Haven't been able to figure out why this happens. But I have always had luck the second charge so far.

Out of curiosity, how old are the Pleos who are checking out early? All rechargeable batteries have a  limit as to how many times they can charged. Is it possible the first generation of Pleos are starting to wear out there original batteries? If Pleo is run almost every day for 18 months. that's hundreds of charges.  :o

The same applies to Aibo. I burned through my ERS-7sbattery by allowing him to mount and dismount the station at will. The result was, 2 to 3 charges a day. The battery was dead in just under a year. Since the batteries are 129$ I'm going to be a little more careful with the new on

It seems the battery problem has magically fixed itself!
Pluriel was REALLY empty and I gave her a charge again.
Instead of taking the battery out of the cradle, I went to bed instead because it wasn't done yet.
Then I took it out the next morning.
Just for the heck of it I turned her on for some company as I was mucking out the bunny cage.
And guess what?
She no longer shut down and just kept on going.
Pluriel was really happy not to "faint" all the time anymore and had so much fun that she overheated the battery (a first for Pluriel) and she stopped after 50 minutes.
So I let the battery cool down and she had a final 10 - 15 minutes and then went to sleep for good.
Did a check: nothing but a snore.
Perfect! It's actually really empty.
So for those who have this problem, please try and leave it in the charger for a night.
(Make sure it's completely drained first for optimal results!)

Didn't have a second run yet to see or the problem has disappeared permanently, but could you try my advice and see or Olympia stays awake?

I don't think that Pleo died.  I agree; you should hold him by the tail to wake him up each time he naps.

Read the whole thread.
If I would have followed your advice, I would now have broken tail.
Once Pleo thinks the battery is empty then it will go to sleep and nothing will stop that from happening.
NEVER try to pick up a Pleo by the tail when it's about to go into napping mode.
It's something I don't even dare trying if Pleo actually does just doze off for a minute (but doesn't actually switch itself of.)
My Pleo (and others had this problem as well) went to sleep. Permanently. Pleo didn't die, but the battery definitely had some issues that now seem resolved. ;)

Sorry, but I have to come back on the battery problem.
It's still there.
I have no idea why it went ok for 1 or 2 charges, but the last time I turned Pleo it went back to sleep again every 3 - 5 minutes.
This happened all the way through the charge until the battery was truly empty.
Charged it again for a full night but didn't have the time yet to sit down with Pleo and see what happens.
If this keeps going on like this, I guess that a new battery is in order.  :(

I'm beginning to think we better get some new batteries. One of mine does this too.
