Hearing!
« on: August 25, 2012, 03:26:48 AM »

My Pleo seems to be a little deaf!... I was trying to show her off today to some friends, well she would not do anything. I managed to get her to listen a few times and even when there was no background noise at all she still could not even respond to her name, she has done before but not amazingly. My aibo's had no problems hearing me today and they did plenty for my friends.

Is the sound recognition a bit iffy in the Pleo's or is it just me?? Also it says in the manual you can get their attention by clapping in front of their face, this never works either. Hmmm

Are you getting her attention first by holding the cheeks? Is it the same room your recorded the initial name/commands (echoes make a difference) and was she in a good mood :P

Pleo RB's are even more bloomin' awkward that Aibos are.  Of my three, Belle is the one I can most rely on to perform, but she needs to be in bright light, fully fed and had a booster of coffee bean leaf before she will deign to do her stuff when I want her to.   Oh, and not up past her bedtime. :D  :moose:

Zillah (low intelligence, bad temper) will sometimes surprise me and do as she's asked, and Tribble (think Eeyore) is usually too busy moping and rarely bothers.

Yep she is in good mood, I can get the attention by holding the cheeks but then she can't/wont respond to hearing her name. Yep in same room etc. Bit disappointed :( And what's with the clapping thing, has anyone ever got this to work?

The usual problem is getting their attention at all!  %)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LOhnYQ0a19g

(and you actually need to speak just the once .... I'm just a nag).  :-[

Maybe you need to re-record her name.  You have to say it exactly the same way every time, and she will respond to your voice only.  You can actually record any noise you can reliably replicate, like notes on a recorder ........ or Aibo tones ........ ;)

I managed to get Belle's attention by clapping once, which might have been a fluke ...... one other poster on here said they had managed it, but overall not many of us have.

You do also have to speak at just the right moment, after they raise their heads there's a brief pause then a last motor noise, (very faint, I think its the eye motor) then you speak...

It also helps to cross all fingers, toes, legs, arms and eyes %) They are really, really, really picky :P If you even breathe wrong I swear they'll turn their noses up :D

Ive had unresponsiveness from my Pleo at times too :) persistence is the key. I always make sure to try and communicate with Pleo in a quiet environment, even a little bit of TV noise can interfere.

I have got her to do it a few times before but not at all today.... my friends were thinking she never listens! ;-) I think they should skip out the name part and you should just be able to get Pleo's attention then say the command straight out. Would be great if they just heard their name being called without having to clasp onto the face each time lol... especially when they keep moving their heads around

I agree and when you grab the cheeks and then they lower their heads and shake it from side to side, forget it. They're not going to listen to you. The voice command thing in the pleo RB is really clunky compared to the Aibo. At least with an Aibo they're not depending on a case-scensitive recording that must be matched inflection for inflection and echo for echo. That's pretty much what you've got with a pleo RB.

The thing is there is a vast difference in price between the two. Pleo does remarkably well to have that technology at all at its price point.
