Forum goes AWOL
« on: May 31, 2012, 08:46:55 AM »

It's been rather quiet around here lately.  In fact, May is shaping up to be the 2nd slowest month in the history of pleo....

But as slow as it's been, some of you may have noticed that earlier this week the forums seemed to be missing  :o

I can assure you it was unintentional.  There was a bit of confusion with the web hosting company.  With the introduction of the ads and the kind support of the members here, the forums is just about reaching the point of being self-supporting.  So at this point, everything is pre-paid well into next year so you don't have to worry about things just disappearing and going away . . . but that's not to say people don't screw up.

Sometime during the 3am hour on May 29th (that is, 3am where the server is located), our domain name was flagged as NOT being paid, and so shortly after 4m the site went AWOL.  This was quickly spotted by observant members and the admins were notified.  A call was made and after approximately 3 hours of dead time and the forums were back . . .  kind of.  The helpful person who "corrected" the problem didn't really correct it.  The forums were back up for about an hour, then for the next few hours the site was there, but wasn't working properly.  Another phone call to fix the previous fix and this time the forums finally just went away all together again.   ???  Third times a charm, right?  Well, after a third call and a bit of a wait, after a second downtime of 5 hours, the forums were finally back up for real.  :)

I did notice this has been a slow month, particulary the last two weeks of the month, I figured Memorial Day weekend, people go away, here in the U.S. anyway, and then school lets out in lots of places, kids graduate and people go on vacation.

As for the site being down, it freaked me out. At first I kept trying to sign in, and couldn't, Must have spent ten minutes or more and no luck, so I got desparate and trie signing in as a new member, anything so I could get on the forums, No luck no matter what I did. Even using the password from a email sent to me in 2010, ( yes I save old emails if I think they may be important.) %) Then I got that stupid Go Daddy domain saying this site was no longer running and up "for sale", and a bunch of other stuff about it and offering it for sale! You can imagine what that made my brain think...I knew it did not make any sense and during one small five minute period the site worked and I was trying to respond to a Sparky the Rb post that had been responded to around 1:00 a.m but then it just disappeared like you said.
At first I thought it was a computer glitch and you should have heard the unkind words I said to my computer.. :o :-X Then not being able to sign in was the most frustrating. Luckily I gave up out of frustration and came back a couple of hours later to it up and working. I even went onto another site to try an locate a couple of members here who live out of the U.S. to see if they knew what was going on...( I had no way to contact anyone in charge of course or no emails but knew there were others who must..)
I was starting to go through "Bob the Pleo Forums" meltdow and withdrawls.......... P:) P:'( I hate to think what I would be like even by day one of no Pleo Forums...Computers and the Internet and all that is involved can be such a technological nightmare sometimes....Thank Goodness it was solved. I hope Bob does not get blamed for this . By the way, why has Bob gone on vacation and not updated the comic strip? It still talks about the tomato festival.......?

Big THank-YOu from the REdwoods Clan and myself for getting this mess straightened out and explaining it...( if it happens again, I will take it more in stride and not have a minor meltdown...( crosses fingers.... P%)) ;) RWM                            P.S. as for slow....I can't help what others are doing, but I have lots of posting to do as the Redwoods Clan have been busy, we have a Kinetic Sculpulpture Race to post, a few videos, and Major Tom has a birthday celebration to post . ( tommorow is his 2'nd birthday) so that will help...and we are doing lots of beach excursions and going out in the public and spreading the word of Pleo!

RWM in future if a favorite site isn't working try visiting some other sites, if other sites are working its not a computer issue. If they aren't working either, then worry.

What does AWOL mean?

RWM I use this site to check if it is a problem with me or the site I'm trying to access, it is called "Is it down for everyone or just me" and all you do is copy the address of the site you think is not working and click the blue words and it will then tell you if the site is down or the problem is with you http://www.downforeveryoneorjustme.com/
 ;)

I slept through most of the downtime but it was still down for about an hour when I woke up, since I had already done my daily trolling of Aibo-Life I had nothing else to do but vaccum the house :o :o :o

I noticed this, I thought it was just my computer glitching up though! I'm glad the forum is up and running again  ;D
