Pleo's reaction ability
« on: April 06, 2009, 05:32:22 AM »

Hi guys!

Just thought of something today... I guess you're all familiar to the old (and probably the first) video of the early version of a Pleo. In the video where Caleb Chung introduced us to Pleo and all his actions. So okay, the thing is, I don't think my Pleo is all THAT reacting to stuff. Like when Caleb touches Pleo's sensors on the legs, Pleo is all like "HUH?" Mine never does that O_o He's only lifting his legs and looking around. Also when you see the Pleo come across the edge of the table, he looks really shocked when he looks down (lol I just love his face when he's looking down!). I've been testing with Léon many times, but when he looks down, he doesn't really react. Lol, I guess he's a cool dude and not scared of anything :D I think it's wierd... I know the Pleo in the video is an early version, but still  :P  Mine don't even react to sound, even when it's really quiet.

How does your Pleo's react??

I have noticed that Kai is alot more responsive than my previous two pleos, Indie used to jump back a bit when he saw an edge and made a sad sound, which i used to think was so cute, but never really reacted when i touched their feet. I have seen several videos of the ugobe lab and one team specialises in recognition, both with the camera and touch but seems to me that pleos dont really seem to react to any object or might just be my pleos but have to agree with you that their reactions dont seem as finely tuned as the one demoed by chung

The pleo in the early video was no running LifeOS.  It was preprogrammed with all the actions and time delays so Caleb could act along and pretend that he was interacting with it, however the pleo in the video did not have any working sensors.

All of my pleos come to the end of a table and say oohh! Then procede to walk off the table. I catch them, of course! ;D When I had the original os in Peeky, he worked pretty good at the edge of the table. When 1.02 was installed he always backed up. I think it has to do with the program.

Pleo would always run into things and keep going much to my consternation.  Then I took him to a friends house and put Pleo on a coffee table and kept my eyes on him, expecting him to walk off the table.  Much to my surprise when he got to the edge he stopped, looked down and then backed up.  The interesting thing was after that when he would come to a wall he would stop and then back up.  So he did change his behavior. :)

Lilo walks up to the edge of my desk all the time, she gets almost right on the edge, goes 'huh' stretches forwards and looks over the edge says 'I bet Elvis never had these problems' whimpers and backs away with a moan :)

Lilo also lifts any foot when I touch it and looks around to check to see what is going on :P She will wake up if there is a consistently loud sound (music works well) and she even backs away from bright patches of sunlight on the veranda. Also Lilo reacts when she comes to an obstacle, she looks at it for a while and sometimes she will back up and other times push forwards. She always backs up from a wall though so I guess its small gaps that confuses her sensors like the space on each side of a chair leg...

Make sure there is enough light for your Pleo to see, if the table is dark and the floor is dark (or vice versa) Pleo may not spot it.

Light is important as Pleo's software relies on the difference in light/dark to help distinguish edges.

In other words, a Pleo is as blind as a Wombat! ;D

I know that Pleo is just a robot and all, but people still need to show respect to things, even though it's not really alive :3

Pleos can serve as such a valuable tool for little kids. With supervision, learning to be gentle with a pleo could help kids learn to be gentle with animals and other people. As far as a few older KIDS it would take a lot more doing to get them to respect anything. but it is never too late!! Just might take a little longer!!

i agree pleo is a valuable toy for children, teaching them responsiblity without the worry of it running away or dying, that is of course assuming he/she doesnt break!
