The great dividing range...

Sadly all the trees on this slope have been wiped out by the 07 bushfires.

It divides the coastal areas from the inland areas :) It runs right along the East coast from Victoria to Queensland :)

Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia have most of the population with only isolated pockets in Western Australia, Northern Territory and Tasmania :)

The Great Dividing Range (after the fire,) looks a bit like the hills above the Merced River canyon in the county I came from.

You can find just about any geologic formation or mineral in California.  From vestigial glaciers to geysers, from 282 feet (85.5 meters) below sea level to 14,505 ft (4,421 m) high.  And for all you hurricane folk in Florida, I remember evacuation plans where I used to live in the foot hills of the Sierra Nevada that were readied when it looked like the magma under Mammoth Lakes was threatening to blow.  By car it was about a six or seven hour drive.  But as the pterodactyl flies it's only about 40 miles (64 Km) away.  That plus the fires and earthquakes is why we Californians love the state so much! ;)

*hugs geologically stable Australia* No active volcanoes, no glaciers, minor earthquakes, mini tornadoes... only fires and hurricanes/cyclones :) Home sweet home :)

We have geysers a little north/east of here.(about an hour away). I can see the steam rising from there everyday. This is an amazing planet. Just wish it were a little less active! ;D

Haha, our ever-so-lovely Florida weather is enough for me! The hurricanes are a hoot! Anyone ever been to a hurricane party?? (Believe me, we DO have those!!) The flooding, half the time it will rain on one end of the road and not the other. And if anyone remembers reading my chain e-mail about FL-you have to switch from heat to a/c all in the same day!

My one and only time in Florida was in the Navy. Basic training in Orlando. While walking to the office one day, I saw signs warning to take cover in a flash flood. Being from California, I had no idea what that meant until that day. As I was a few blocks away from the offices, it happened. :o  I thought it was just raining a little extra hard, but in two minutes I could have swam quicker then walk to the office. Water was up to my knees. There wasn't any cover to be found!! ??? I can only imagine what a hurricane is like there! ;D

The closest I came to Florida was in South East Texas in the early 70s.  In California it rains (or is supposed to) for about three months of the year and the sky is clear of clouds for about six months, not counting San Francisco of course.  So it was supprising to me to see clouds in the summer and to experience a rain that dumped 13 inches (33.2 cm) in twelve hours.  And when a hurricane was going through Georgia to have 60 mph (97Kph) as a head wind while riding a bicycle. :o

There's a sign up at one of the caravan parks my Nan and Pa visit on their winter holiday, it reads:

In case of flooding, jump in your car and GO, leave EVERYTHING!!!

The earthquake was a 6.3.  It followed a 4.6 a few hours earlier. :(  More or less central Italy, on the East side about 70 miles (110 Km) from Rome.

Yep!! That's Florida for you! We're WAY more than theme parks and vacation destination! The hurricane/cyclone season is in the summer, and 9 out of 10 times, FL is hit! As far as the flash flooding goes, that's the story of my life. Although more recently, we've been stuck in a horrible dry spell. However with the weather warming up, Mother Nature has a tendency to go a little berserk! I'm still looking forward to our hurricane season, they are honestly a real hoot.

As far as the quake in Italy, OMG!! I saw it on the news, something like over 100 people are dead. It's very very sad. I am happy to hear Junkroxy is doing well, my condolences go out to all of those whose lives have been changed because of this!
