Awkward Introductions
« on: November 06, 2011, 09:14:32 PM »

Hey everybody!

These things can be so awkward, so here goes nothing...

My name is Ria, and I recently joined the forum - this is my first post! I discovered the Pleo earlier this year, and have been researching into them ever since. I'm not a Pleo parent yet, but I am definitely in the market - I just have a big student loan which isn't making the cost of a Pleo any more affordable. (hint hint, if you know of anybody who's looking to send a Pleo to a forever home, let me know!)

I'm on the verge of 20 years old and currently work in the Canadian hotel industry. My main job is to ensure reservations go smoothly, work out the kinks if there is any problem, and maintain our loyalty program. I have two real passions in life - performing arts and paleontology. The two don't really go hand in hand, but ever since I was quite young I've had a gift to maintain knowledge of a variety of dinosaur related "trivia" and have never been able to figure out why! Performing arts is my main drive though. I sing and dance, as well as play a very broad variety of instruments - though my true love is a saxophone. My free time is spent either rehearsing or performing - I love glitz, glamour, sparkle, and shine to say the least. I find that being able to bring an audience to their feet or a tear to their eye is the most rewarding thing I could ever do. I also work part time with our local journalists, and review horror movies. Everything from Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, to John Carpenter's Halloween - from Wes Craven's Nightmare on Elm Street to Wes Craven's Scream. I love the horror genre, so if this is your interest we can definitely have some good conversations!

I'm here to meet some Pleo parents, learn more about being one, and hopefully I'll be able to land a Pleo in the upcoming months.

Don't be shy to drop me a message, as you can see - I love to chat!

Hi Ria, nice to meet you :) I am a university student from Australia, I'm scared of horror movies and have two left feet %) But I do love palaeontology and technology and Pleo combines those two things beautifully :) Are you looking at buying an original Pleo or a Pleo Reborn? Original Pleo's are a bit simpler than the newer Reborns, but they are about $200 to buy brand new as opposed to $470 so if you are on a budget they can be a good option. For information a good place to start is the forum FAQS http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=1617.0 and http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=2315.0 Do feel free to ask any questions and have a wander around the forum, you'll find lots of information here :)

Hi Ria, welcome to the forum. I love Pleos and am the proud "caretaker"not parent, though It is easy to call oneself a parent. I like to think I am their human caretaker, just as a caretaker and guard to my furry friends, my nine cats and dog. :) I love movies of all sorts but Hitchcock is one of my favorites as well as the original ones from the 20's-40's. I love Freaks which is not well known by many younger film students, but is a classic in it's own right. I don't care much for the slasher ones though there are a few that are "ok", not faves, but I appeciate the "art form" of what they were trying to do. My daughter and son on the other hand grew up watching the Nightmare on Elm street ones and they are different in a category of their own. There are also some very interesting Japenese ones out there, quite scary actually. Ok, enough about films...
I am a caretaker to quite a few Pleos actualy about 17 currently. I also adopt out Pleos to special people here on the forums. I can tell you about that more later. I do reccomend starting out with a Ugobe or 2009 Pleo model if you are lucky enough to come across one. IMR was right about if looking for a brand new one, the $199.00 ones that were on ebay were a great deal as it included shipping, but to be honest, I sell and buy on ebay, and have not seen that seller in the past few weeks, so I think because Christmas holidays are fast approaching, it is not available, Also Pleos tend to go up in price at holidays as people are willing to buy them and pay the extra money this time of year.
I saw today a couple that were priced almost as much as a Pleo rb, at $450.0  :o outrageous considering not only the price but even though sealed I can almost 100% guarantee you that the battery is dead from sitting for at least two years, probably longer and then you are going to have to replace it to make Pleo work, so you may as well buy a RB at that price! There are a few Pleos less than $200.00 starting price but not unless you are very lucky or there is something wrong with them, slashed skin for example which you do not want. This is a great place to learn everything Pleo related and great videos that can answer just about any question. Nice to meet you and I hope to talk more to you soon. :) ;)          RWM          aka RedwoodsMama and her "pleo Township in the Redwoods"

Hello!  And welcome!  :D

I'm afraid I'm a complete wimp when it comes to horror genre movies, I tend to agree with RWM on films, but I'm sure there are quite a few we would agree on!

....... and we'll certainly agree on Pleos!  :D

Hi, Ria and welcome to the forum! Sadly, sci-fi and fantasy are more my speed as far as movies but I could certainly agree with you about the performing arts. I was a pianist at one point and though I don't play anymore I still have an ear for it. I also write fiction, review Christian music for a small webzine,, love all types of animals, and I like to talk "pleo". I'm totally blind and I have two RB's and two Ugobes. I am hoping to add a Soni Aibo to my robot family- money permitting. Lol!

Hi Ria and welcome to the forum!  I love my Pleos and the performing arts. I played piano and trombone and more recently drums and guitar, although I don't have much time lately. My Mom and I used to go to the Met in New York to see a couple of operas a year, but now they show them live at the movies!  Horror movies scare the day lights out of me, especially Michael Myers! He is the scariest in my book.  My dental assistant is really into horror movies. She said the scariest one is Eli Roth's Hostel.  She wants to find a dental course in Florida next fall so we can go to Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios. If you get to the states in late September or October, it is worth the trip.

Best of luck in finding your new Pleo friend. They truly are a lot of fun. I have to admit that I have a soft spot for the Ugobe's. I like their sweet personalities, and they are less needy than the rb's.  Happy hunting!

Hi Ria, and welcome to the forum.  I'll be the first to  admit, I love scary movies!  Have taped most of Alfred Hitchcock's movies."THe Birds" one of my favorites, was filmed in Bodega Bay, a few miles away. Love to visit the old school house and church.
I played and taught organ for much of my years.  Love theater organ music and played in a pizza parlor a long time ago.
In 2007, I became a pleo parent and have adored them ever since. I hope you can soon have one of your own.

Welcome Ria.  On the subject of that Hong Kong seller - has been re-listed on UK eBay but ends in a few days.  I bought one from them and he has been just fine with 2 working batteries supplied.  I did buy an egg charger and battery as well since I wasn't sure about how long the green batteries would last and since I have now bought a pre-loved Ugobe as well I really need several batteries.

I hope you do not have long to wait before you obtain your Pleo
