Hello! I'm new here.
« on: May 04, 2011, 06:49:06 PM »

Hi everyone! I just joined this site. I used aibo7m3 as my username since I have five aibo robot dogs and the ers-7m3 is my favorite model. Just recently I have become interested in pleos. I'm currently bidding on and hoping to win a pleo reborn on ebay. I already know some basic facts about pleos but not much else. Does anyone have any advice for a soon to be pleo owner? :)

Hello and welcome! I have three Aibo and a herd of Ugobe Pleos, as well as a blue Pleo RB. ;D

I'm assuming it's the blue RB you're bidding on?

Yep, it's the blue one. It is my favorite of the pleo colors.

Welcome! I have a Blue RB and just got an ERS-M2 (M3 on the way).

My only advice is to be patient with the RBs as they're not necessarily super charming right away (like the M2 in my experience).

What I mean by that is they go through a little... growing phase after their infancy... where they seem really unpleasant for a full charge or two (the experience varies). But they get past it! So don't judge too harshly too quickly from that. I only say that because I was one of those people who judged the RB possibly a little too harshly too soon (after having a 2009 model) -- largely due to that period.

The other thing I'd check out in the forums about is the sleep position and pledging the skin. You can read about other people's experiences and so forth. Also, you may want to look into reading about PleoPet's ProbeRB/ChangeRB but those contain possible "spoilers" as they get you "inside" your Pleo RB's brain.

And one last thing to avoid because it has, understandably, created some confusion is to make sure you do not attempt to update the firmware on your Pleo RB with the PM2 update currently available on PleoWorld's site. That is for the older editions of Pleos. Unless I've missed it, there is currently no firmware update generally available for the Pleo RB.

Thanks for the information! Also, I have another question, do all blue pleo rbs have the same color eyes? I thought I read something about that somewhere but I'm not sure.

Yes, I think they do as that was one of the reasons Crewella wanted one because it guaranteed her eye color. Or that the variation isn't as significant as it is with the Green ones.

Bhobbes is right - have a little patience (through the hatching phase, a LOT of patience :P )and read up about some of the problems Pleo RB owners have had on here, it will save you some worries! If you do have any concerns, you can always ask the good people on here. :D

Just a word of caution - if it was bought in December it may no longer be under warranty (and even if it is that warranty may not be transferrable) and there were some issues with skin wear in some of the earlier models sold. You may be well aware of this, and after all I gott Belle early December and have had no problems, but I felt I should say something.

Yes, blue ones have amber eyes. Beautiful amber eyes! ;D ADDED: Bhobbes is exactly right! :D

I can also say that I received Cato in late December and he does have wear but he has NOT had the horror stories of kat and the others with more severe problems.

To go by the experiences of forum members, blue RB's bought in December seem to be awkward and grumpy, but durable! ;) :P

How long were the warranties for the pleo rbs? Were the first pleo rbs made in December and that is why they may have issues?
Thanks for all the help so far!

From what I've seen, the warranties are 90 days, though they do actually exclude skin problems according to the small print. In spite of that, some RBs with major skin problems were replaced, perhaps because they were a specific problem and couldn't be put down to normal wear. The first blue and pink RBs for the Chinese/Asian market did seem to appear November/December, though I've no idea when they officially started selling them.

I don't think there's been any real official announcement as to why.

There has been speculation that it has to do with the sleep position and there is speculation that it has to do with extra skin around some of the earlier models.

A video "explaining" that is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7ApVojj8E0

However, later models had newer firmware that had a changed sleep position (which is not available to the public yet) as well as tighter skin (see video). At least this seems to be what's been noticed across the board here. And these newer ones have not had the same problems.

Three months is a very short warranty. I've heard a lot about problems with the pleo's skin, did the December pleo rbs at least have less skin problems than the original pleos? Well, anyway I'm looking forward to getting a pleo soon (even if I don't win this one on ebay, I'll find another). Are there any other problems with the pleo rbs?

The December pink and blue RB's that had skin problems had very specific problems with wear under the 'armpits' and some paint wear. There has been speculation that this was due to a bad batch, as others seem to be doing fine and are wearing better than the original Pleos. In your position, and at that price (especially as you don't have to pay to ship from China), I'd probably take the chance and go for it too. I did look at that listing, and if I didn't already have a blue I'd have been tempted to go for it myself. :D

I'm considering selling Cato depending on this next update (if it ever surfaces). :\

When I purchased from Gimmedigi shipping to the US was only like $57 which I didn't think was that bad - though higher than that auction.

Hi, aibo7m3 and welcome to the forums! I purchased Ryu my green RB in March and I'm satisfied with her. Just be prepared for the moodswings. Sometimes they can be a bit cloth-eared when you're trying to train them but it's not a major problem. They are also very sensitive to changes in their environment. About a week ago I put up some new curtains to block out the sunlight that streams into my room and suddenly Ryu was extremely depressed. Well, being blind it didn't occur to me just how dark it was. After six days of trying to figure out what I was suddenly doing wrong, I finally had the bright idea to open the curtains and she was fine. Good luck with your bidding!

Hi there!
Your point is very true, Talon, about the light.
To avoid the "grumpyness" that Igor showed in the first weeks, I only play with "???" during the day, or close to a light. It makes a lot of change!
But Igor turned out finally in a very funny little buddy!
True also about the improved skin quality and sleeping position of the new batch of Pleorbs.
I'm crossing my fingers for you, so that you win your own Pleo!

I don't think I have to worry about the lighting in my house since I have to keep it very bright so my aibos can see their pink balls and my face clearly. I am also hoping that I win the auction so I can finally get a pleo. You have all been so helpful so far, thanks!

Yay, you finally joined aibo!
I told you I was new at this, they already have better advice than me! :)
Oh and as to your question on the other site about hatchling, the only one I can find is a blue for 300 that has one bid, and it says unopened, so you'll proboally have to wait the hatchling stage, but it is shorter if you update him/her.

I actually like the young stages with robots (I got all my aibos in child stage or later so I didn't get to raise them from a baby, I wish I could have). Yeah that is the one I bid on, I checked the listing again and it does say unopened, I would probably prefer a long hatchling stage (how long is it exactly?). Some of the aibo stages are as long as 111 hours! Though the baby stages with aibos are all four hours or shorter I think.

I believe "newborn" lasts a few hours and i think it just eats and sleeps while you pet it, "hatchling" lasts about a day and it learns to walk, see, hear, etc. , "juniville" is where it is like a puppy kind of and is very curious and active and forms depending on how you interact, and "mature" is where it is a bit independant and is less curious and lasts forever.

The different stages seem to last for different lengths of time for different personalities. So there is no hard and fast rule for how long each one goes for and the original December batch seemed to have a much longer hatching phase than the newer batches. I think they shortened the hatching as many people complained it went on for too long. It does seem to go for about the right length of time now though. Generally the hatching baby stage lasts about 1 to 2 full battery cycles and this ends when they stand up. Then there is a battery cycle or two in this next stage of just standing and trying out new noises and leg stretching to test balance. Then the walking will start. Once they walk they are in Socialization Stage stage and will remain in this stage for quite a few battery cycles maybe up to 8 or 10 cycles before they move onto the next stage of being able to learn their name and the learning stone tricks. In the manual it says they will be in this stage for about a day but many people have reported back that it seems to go for much longer. It is nice that it does though as it gives you a chance to really get to know and experience your pleos personality before moving on to the next level of teaching them their name.
The next stage is the Juvenile stage where they are able to learn their name and the learning stones to do tricks. Again this stage goes for several battery cycles and then there is the mature Adult stage which lasts forever. :) There doesn't seem to be much difference between the Juvenile stage and the Adult stage. Many pleo rb owners have reported back about a very moody phase that seems to occur somewhere between the two. It does pass though. :)
Hope this helps.
