Customs charges
« on: April 12, 2011, 09:42:20 PM »

I've seen from looking through the forums, that a few people have had to pay customs charges on their pleo deliveries... I personally had to pay over £50. I'm wondering whether it would be worth telling gimmedigi about this. Is it unique to their deliveries? Has anybody ordered from another site and had to pay this? Also I can't understand why the price differs so massively for people. I think I might send an email to gimmedigi and ask if they know anything about it :s

Hi Melly, I buy and sell a lot on Ebay and I'm afraid customs charges on goods coming into the UK from outside the EU are standard.  They are made up of VAT on commercial goods over £18 and also Import Duty on goods over about £130 (if I remember rightly).  It seems to be more expensive to import from the US, and people in the UK that bought from Pleoworld had to pay even more (about £20 more if I remember rightly) than you did, but I must confess I've not looked properly into why that might be.  Sometimes you can get lucky and one slips through, especially items under £100, or where it's been marked as a 'gift', but you can't rely on it.  It's annoying, but not Gimmedigi's fault in any way.  >:(

I hope I don't run into this kind of thing from my Pleo. I got him from Hong Kong via Ebay for about $124 (But with free shipping, if that makes any difference), and I aready owe alot of money to other people, without customs charges to deal with.

I really hope you don't, Fimoman, but you could well get charged VAT, then there will be around £10 handling fee for the courier, so it could be £20-30.  Fingers crossed that it slips through for you.
