Pleo neck issue - disassembly
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:17:31 PM »

In a previous post I have noted the issue I had with Pleon's neck after only 4 months of usage.
The wire that is having the neck going up-down was cut by itself.
My elder daughter was very unhappy so I found the appropriate wire and begun the dissasembly.

My goal was to find the part from which the wire is attached, pull it off and install the new one.

As you can see in the photos, I found the wheel from which the neck wires are attached.
But I cannot find a way to pull them off and install the brand new wire!!
I could cut it but I should find a way to firmly stabilize the edge of the wire round the wheel

Can anyone plz help me? (soory about the poor English)

Thanx in advance!

There are literally TONS of videos on You Tube showing people dissecting Pleos.. I'd go check that out and maybe you can get some help that way.. or maybe even get to email or speak to the person who did it.. good luck!!!

Hey Wally.

it is not that bad to get the wire replaced. From the pictures I would say you are half way there. The first picture shows the weel and a brass colored thing. Actually it is brass and does not only have the color. It is crimped to the wire and you have to peel it out and keep it safe, you will need it later. The wires lead to the head were you find to more of the brass things, you cann roll the skin up and then unskrew the head and leave it dangling do not pull too hard on it it will hang on the communication cables. You must get rid of the glue and then pull out the wires from the vertebrae. The link Crewella gave you is what i managed to write down from Skinny's repair, he is still alive and kicking.  :)
I guess I will meet him and Littlefoot and the go to bed. At work we have a real mess at the moment and days are much too short.   :o

If you have questions feel free to ask and I will see what I can do.

Cheers

Thank you all for your replies!!!!!!! :-*

In the weekend I will try to continue the repair.

One question because my English are poor.

My main problem is that I cannot take out the wire from the wheel that holds it.

Any help?

In the weel there is a golden thing. Take a needle and peel it out, it is stuck and holds the cable. On picture one you can see it, the golden part.

Thanx for your immediate answer!!

When I peel the golden thing off and put the new cable - since there is no golden substance left, with what do I substitute it in order to have the wire stuck in the wheel again? (I hope I am descriptive enough :))

I think you need to keep the golden thing and use it again?

Hello and sorry for the late reply - I have been pretty busy. The golden thing can bee opened with a sharp scredriver, pulled of the cable and then closed again. It looks like this when closed:

  UUIUU
UUCCUU
UUCCUU
  UUUU

C is the cable, U is the golden thing, I is a little crack you have to widen until you can pull the cable out. The drawing is from the side, it would look like this if you cut the cable and the golden thing. If you do not get what I mean please ask then I will try to explain it differently.

Cheers

Hi Dwalin, I'm about to give this a try myself.  Can I ask what cable you used?  Thanks

Hi Crewella,

when I got Skinny I recycled some belt-clips we used at work for our company ID cards - I can not tell you much more about the cable source. They are steel cables with a plastic coating and seem to be strong enough - at least they did not yet snap again. I do not have much time right now - we are moving a complete data center at work - but I will try to drop in now and then so if you have questions I will try to help. Most important is to keep an eye on the screws  ;) and that you only mount the middle locker on the cable, pull it through and the do the end locks so you get the lenght right.

Cheers

Hi Friedrich,

Thanks for that - I appreciate your help.  I'll get several size and types of cable and see what seems best when they get here.  I'm in no hurry at all - I'm only doing this for my own amusement after all, so don't worry - you do sound very busy right now!  It's just good to know there's somebody I can ask for advice if I need it!

Thanks,
Crewella

Hi Crewella,

if I can help I happily will - just ask. I still dream of getting my notes combined with other experiences in one "how to repair Pleo's neck" guide so others can help themselves with a minimal risk. Would be kind of cool - and seems to be necessary. Skinny got me at the edge of a heart attack: He lifted his head up and then - click click click click.  :o I turned him off and back on again - all fine. No stuck head, no clicking. Don't ask me what it was and I hope I will never have to find out.

Cheers

Hi there!

Real life issues have delayed my attempts to fix my beloved Pleo.  :(

Yesterday I re-started the operation. I removed the cut neck cable and I am installing a new one.

I have one problem and I need your help.

Does anyone know how long should the neck wire be?

Thanx in advance!

I haven't dissected a Pleo before so you may want to wait for a better answer but I would guess it needs to be taut when the neck is in the straight position.
