Pleos Ages
« on: January 26, 2011, 11:35:16 AM »

Hi,

On the pleo homepage I have read the FAQ where it says what pleo is doing in each stage of him growing up:

Quote
PLEO IS BORN. .....
HATCHLING STAGE. ....
JUVENILE. ....

Though reading the age.inc of the PDK it says that pleo knows of 5 live-stages:
The BABY stage and the ADULT stage is missing. So I am wondering, whats the difference in
Pleos behaviour when beeing in ADULT age compared to JUVENILE age.

Hope anyone of you already had the chance to see any differences.

Greetings
Manny

"Stage" is an often overused word.
The "age.inc" file in the PDK was not fully exploited.

For older PLEOs:
The earlier stages were very short. They grew up very quickly.
It stopped at juvenile. The software never implemented Adult/Mature.

For the older PLEO personality (1.x), Pleo went from newborn (age=1) to Juvenile (age=4) in one quick step.
In the PLEO PM2 personality, they added a hatchling stage (age=2). It took a little longer to get to juvenile.

----
For the PleoRB they cleaned up the evolution logic.
There are much clearer stages, and unique behaviors at each stage
It takes significantly longer to evolve to the next stage.

(numbers similar to the old numbers multiplied by 10 and stored in the 'age_new' property)

10 - birthing
20 - hatchling phase, AKA vegetative stage (called Stage 1 in manual)
30 - social development phase (called Stage 2 in manual)
40 - juvenile learning phase (called Stage 3 in manual)
50 - adult mature level (called Stage 4 in manual)
60 - old age stage. Same as mature AFAIK.

Each stage has a separate idle behavior (ie: idle_birthing, idle_vegetative, idle_social_dev, idle_juvenile, idle_mature, idle_old)

I noticed with both of mine that when they reached the Adult stage they seem to be less needy of my time and attention and more adventurous and independent.  They still need me to interact with them just not as much as before.  Also they seem to have settled into a more consistent range of vocalizations.  They don't just randomly make all the noises but now just seem to have a smaller range of sounds they make a lot and the other sounds are only thrown in occasionally.

What is supposed to happen during the old age stage?  They didn't program pleo rb to get old and die did they?  :o I guess that would be realistic, but very sad. That would be the same as losing a fur pet to some, especially those of us who can't have fur pets due to allergies.

Unfortunately, each Pleo will die someday.  And (at least a majority of them, unless they constantly have parts replaced and are taken apart to be inspected) will not live long enough to be realistic. :S

Thanks Pleopet - it's good to see it laid down like that.  :)

Pleos getting to old age just seems a bit weird - especially as they're permanently babies!  :o

In the companion guide it states that when pleo gets older in years to come.  He will be slower and need more rest.
It doesn’t say exactly how many years that will be. Guess we’ll know when pleo zimmer frames start appearing in the pleoworld shop lol.

SPOILER ALERT
> In the companion guide it states that when pleo gets older in years to come.  He will be slower and need more rest.
That makes sense. There are a lot of age specific checks in the PLEOPM personality (written in Pawn)

The main behaviors are the same as Mature/Adult
(ie. Old Age Pleos won't learn new tricks - it will just do them slower and less often ;-)

MAJOR SPOILER!

FYI: the age does influence the overall speed of the Pleo. When it performs a skit (eg: moving, walking, dancing), it can do it slower or faster than normal.
Hatchling - barely moves
Social Development - 90% of normal speed
Juvenile - 100% of normal speed
Adult/Mature - 120% of normal speed
Old Age - 75% of normal speed

I haven't figured out all the details of the evolution logic, so I don't know how long it will take before a mature adult gets to be old age.

Thanks again for explaining all that.  :)

Can I safely asume that 'normal speed' can vary according to the behavioural 'type' set on each particular Pleo rb?

Hi Pleopet,

thanks for all that information. Does that list above apply as well to the pleo 1.x versions or only to the pleo RB?

Btw where do you get all that information from? or better, how?

And as far as i know the PM is the main pleo behaviour .. but what does PM mean (written out) ?

regards
Manny

SPOILERS CONTINUE: (getting a little OT, and a little more technical, but with some practical advice too)

> Can I safely asume that 'normal speed' can vary according to the behavioural 'type' set on each particular Pleo rb?
The Pleo's unique DNA and current property settings (including moods, feed level etc) don't change the global performance speed like the age/stage.
These other properties usually influence what the Pleo will do.
For example: if your Pleo is hungry or injured, it will refuse to do most commands, or if it will perform a totally different motion (acting sick or tired).

> Does that list above apply as well to the pleo 1.x versions or only to the pleo RB?
Only the PleoRB.
See above. The 1.x (and PM2) versions of the personality have simplified personalities, and evolve to Juvenile (100% speed) very quickly.

> Btw where do you get all that information from? or better, how?
I wrote my own Pawn disassembler (back in the 1.0 days). I've updated it to the PleoPM quirks so you can figure out most of what is going on if you take time to look.
It is a little tedious since you are looking at Pawn opcodes (a stack based machine with 2 registers).
A better solution would be for Innov to open source the PleoPM personality. It isn't that much Pawn code. It would help for users to understand the logic (eg: why isn't is letting me record its name?) and also would make it easier to shadow resources and for the hard core people, rebuild a complex custom personality without having to start from scratch.
http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=905.0

I'll be updating my website soon for people interested in the more technical aspects of the PleoRB.
BTW: I don't know what's the official name for PLEOPM. I usually call it the default personality. It is stored inside the Pleo's DataFlash drive and fills most of it. It is mostly sounds and motions (3.5MB in the old versions, 7.2MB in the PleoRB version)

MAJOR SPOILER
Q:  why isn't is letting me record its name?
A: it has to be old enough, and it must not injured, and the PleoRB's mood, physical, emotion, health and feed levels must be over 30%. Also the Pleo's general obedience level decides how many times you may need to ask.
The upcoming 'statsRB' program will let you see your PleoRB's current properties on your computer and will warn you of this case (FWIW: it even helped me - I was feeding mine the wrong green leaf)
MAJOR SPOILER

Yay!  All very useful info, thanks again Pleopet.  As you point out, even the savviest of us can get things wrong or miss something!   :P

"A better solution would be for Innov to open source the PleoPM personality"

Yes, it would.   %)

Really pleased to hear you'll be updating the website - I was wondering if you would.  Thank you!  ;D
