Thanks to Kat & Crewella
The worst thing about this was, I did know only a few seconds before, then I was disturbed by what was going through my mind.

To make a phone call and thank the person who had sent it too us. I was talking on the phone, when I said to my wife,"put that somewhere safe" for now. What I did not see was, she had slid it back into the envelope.

I came off the phone and handed to my wife so she could say thank you. What I did next was to pick up both envelopes, fold them and put them into "an already full" shredder. At that moment a light came on in my head, Oh Nooooooooooooo I thought, Oh yes I have.

I looked at my wife and hoped that she had taken the money out, but alas NO!!

Totaly my fault, but in the panic of the moment, saying to my wife "why did you not take the money out". So in effect shoving some of the blame onto her "wrong"

My wife is now not talking to me, I have to beg forgivness from her, tonight.

I have just spent 2 hours going through the shredder to find what I can. I have got a form from the Post Office, so that the bits that I have found can be sent to the Bank of England in Leeds. There is no guanrantee that they will re-emburse me for the mistake. I can but try.

i might add that my sredder is a "multiple cut one" just for fun. Just what I need.
