Why does Aibos cost that much?
« on: July 30, 2010, 03:01:08 AM »

Perhaps I'm asking stupid, but I was on EBay the other day and searched for an Aibo ERS7. But they are selling for 2,966.20$ each :o can anyone explain this to me or tell me where I can buy one. Thanks :)

Your best bet is Ebay I'd have thought.  I have seen one or two go for under $1000, but you have to be quick to act if they appear, and you have to be VERY careful and do all the checks recommended to avoid being scammed.  Also make sure you do your homework on what model it is and if there are any known problems.  You're safer on the Aibo forums, but I think you're unlikely to find one under $1000.

I'd love one myself, but ended up with a much more affordable ERS210A, and I can't say I regret it.  Best of luck! :D

They don't make Aibo's anymore Ohnart, which is why they are expensive, they are rare and as the robot 'top dog' they are highly sought after.

Mind you they lack the charm that Pleo has, they are a robot and proud of it whereas Pleo tries to be more realistic.

try aiming for a ers 210, they usually go for only a couple hundreds $s a 210 was my first aibo, i now have a 210 and a 31L pug.

theyre more expensive yes, because theyr enot out of preduction, but when they were new robots, they were around a grand.  this is because they really are top notch in consumer robotics. they really do make pleo just look incredibly stupid in comparison in terms of AI.

aibos have hundres of words and phrases they understand, they have proper vision, obstacle detection, colour recognition (pink is toy, orange is a colour it dislikes etc etc)  they actually learn from environment and human interaction.  eg, my 210, who is now 3 years old, when he was a baby, was hopeless, and even when he was more 'grown up' he was more withdrawn, with more nteraction, and praising behaviour you like to see, scolding what you dont like so much they get a more defined personality. my 210 is now very much a show off, and prone to mood swings etc etc.

not totally dissing pleo, he is a cutey! but hes no patch on aibos AI, and aibos are now nearly 11 years old.

of course, what ive described is only for the older models ive had experiance with. the ers7s, are hella more brainy. with full on pattern recognition, and face recognition, short term memory for remembering where places and objects like his toys are, as well as being hooked up to your PC so they can play songs off it, or even blog online.

id say keep saving and aiming for an aibo, you wont be dissapointed; unless of course you want something more 'organic' looking like pleo. i dont really understand why some people dont like aibos looks. hes supposed to be a robot, not a pet.

Yeah definately go for the 210 Aibo i have always liked there Look the best and they are very affordable if you keep your eye on ebay , and there is quite a bit of software available for them too, again you just need to keep your eye on ebay to get it .

The Ers 7 definately has more ability etc but i can not say a price of £2000 / £3000 is worth spending on it  , they have been out of production now for a few years so if it ends up breaking , battery dies you might find your self a bit stuck and Thinking to your self why did i ever spend so much when i could of got a 210 for a quarter of the price you spend on a ers 7 ...    :P
