New Project: Make a fabric skin for an Ugobe Pleo
« on: February 26, 2015, 03:07:15 PM »

Hi everyone!  :)

Tomorrow I will pick up an ugobe pleo. I bought it for 30 €.
It has all the skin with holes and very deteriorated. So I will start a new project to create a new skin for this pleo using fabric. ;)
I convinced my grandmother to help me build the skin . I will design skin (measures, form, etc) and my grandmother will build it.

So i hope this project will help and interests the people who has it's Pleos with the skin like this and will be useful.

A hug to everyone!

P.D: Tomorrow i will post pictures  :dino-chase:

First it was like this:

And now I removed the skin and for now it's like this:

I will upload more images and information about the project and the process!

See you all!  ;)

What is your plan for supporting the 'ankle'?

Man... can I have a soft Pleo like that? I've always wanted a furry alarm clock with a fuzzy cover... so a Pleo would be even cooler! And do you know... does the Paro robotic seal have fur too?

I think Paro has fur. I'm not sure about its texture though. I knew of a member on an aibo forum who had one and for the life of me I can't remember how she described the fur. She said the robot had some weight to it and that its motor noises were very soft.

IMR my plan for supporting the 'ankle' is using a elastic fiber mixed with the bodies fabric. What I'm searching are some elastic clothes or fabrics that don't effect the functioning of the motors and the mobility.  ;)

And yeah Echo haha I think it will be cool to have a pleo with a fuzzy cover. I'm searching a thing like this:

That will be very cool to do!  ;D

I found this after digging around online for a while. The Pleo appears to be covered in a fabric skin, and the man's name tag says Jetta on it. Has anyone else seen this before?

[Edit] After more digging I found this image in an old post on this forum so it's definitely known. I guess it was an old prototype the company never followed through with? Either way it may help someone here trying to make their own skin.

@JakeLBell
I can't view the image. All that shows up is an error box.

On another note, I've never made a fabric skin for a Pleo, but I have made one for an Aibo (made to look like the character Densuke from the show Dennou Coil). It's a lot easier for an Aibo though since they already have a plastic shell and you don't need to cover moving joints. I used fleece for the Aibo costume and the fabric feels pretty fragile, but it's very soft and has held up really well so far and doesn't seem to pick up dust or dirt easily (the robot has a full range of motion and runs normally wearing the costume).

I do have a skinless Pleo though and one with falling apart skin, so I might attempt to make something for a Pleo some day.

Here is a link to the image.

It's the fluffiest Pleo I've ever seen. I'm not really sure how they managed to add padding to the entire thing and still get normal movement from it.

OMGOSH, I love the furry Pleo and the padded one is super cool. I wish they would mass produce those I'd buy one. Ulman I've been looking for that video on youtube, I was trying to explain it to my husband thanks. Good luck with the fur suite for your Pleo cant wait to see it.

I'm thinking of doing this also!! I make costumes and plushies so I already know how I'll make the pattern to fit pleo exactly while letting the joints be moveable still ^.^

I will share the pattern when it's done if I ever get around to making a fluffy pleo
