Title: 2012 Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: mweed on March 17, 2012, 10:48:18 PM
 :o  :o It's the 2012 Tomato Harvest Festival!!!!!  :o  :o

Since the beginning of recorded history (about five years ago), the fields around Weedovia have always been blessed with abundant wild tomato vines.  And every spring and every fall, the local pleos relied on the abundant harvest gathered from these wild vines to enjoy tomatoes (and tomato related food like spaghetti and pizza!) throughout the year.  They would go out twice a year to pick the tomatoes and bring them to the village.  This traditional gathering of the tomatoes quickly grew into a community event, and from there into true full-blown harvest festival.  And with the introduction of the spaghetti trees and pizza by the Great Pepperoni1, a real zest was added to the festivities.

Of course in modern times, with the addition of a carnival, rides, games, live band, and midnight movie on the town square, it has become more of a social event, attracting pleos from around the world.  But all the pleos still go out and harvest the tomatoes and bring them to the town's communal tomato press for the traditional squashing of the tomatoes and the making of the tomato sauce.

This spring's festival is just around the corner. :P  But I guess this is why everyone should have bought a calander! ;)  This spring's festival is April 13th to the 15th.

Not sure what's going on?  Well, then you may want to catch up by reading about the 2010 and 2011 festival topics and the Bob the Pleo comic strips.  But as a quick summary,  the town's park is turn into the festival grounds, with the carnival rides and games, a stage and dance floor, and lots of vendors and food booths!  It starts on a Friday night with the carnival and music from a live band, and at midnight the pleos end the day with an outdoor movie.  Saturday has everyone out in the fields gathering the tomatoes, with the judging in the evening, and back to the carnival.  Sunday is the big tomato squashing where the sauce is made using the traditional foot-stomping method like the great Italian wines.

And at the conclusion of the festival, awards are always handed out to the pleo who gathers the most tomatoes, finds the largest tomato, has the best looking tomatoes, makes the best tasting spaghetti sauce, and for the best use of tomatoes as an article of clothing (i.e., costume).  The last few years winners can be seen by visiting the Bob the Pleo comics.  We had some great fun, and some wonderful costumes!

And, of course, since Weedovia isn't a real place, and we can't really all attend or send our pleos in person, your pleo can enter in by posting pictures here in the forums.  So, for the "most tomatoes" you want a picture of you pleo with a bunch of tomatoes.  For the "largest tomato, you want a picture of your pleo with a really big tomato . . . You get the idea.

For those interested in participating in the contests, please refer to the contest rules topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=792.0) on this board.   For some ideas and/or to get a better understanding, you can check out the 2011 festival topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=1944.0), 2010 festival topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=1154.0), or the 2009 Fall festival topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=794.0) (also on this board).  You can also read up on the Bob the Pleo comic strip! ;)

Post your entries here!

I'll be posting more info here in the next few days . . . but you've only got three weeks to get ready! :o :o :o

Luckily I have a calendar, ok, two of them as I wanted to be ahead of the "brain fog" train which I am a paying customer. NO excuses this year, so I got the Pleos scouting all the Farmer's markets and Natural food co-ops for the biggest best looking tomatoes. And of course I have been a vegetarian longer then any of the Pleos have been around, except for perhaps Bob, but that was in a different lifetime, so I have a Veggie Tomato Spaghetti recipe this year, and I am going to be very brave and let some of the Pleos try to put it together, As long as I can keep them out of the sauce, it should be edible.
I have been waiting for this since last year....oh how I love Weedovia this time of year... ;D :tomato: :tomato: :tomato:Those tomatoes are smiling for a reason..............smile while you can before you turn into Katsup!

Umm, just wondering, any particular reason why a big tomato? I mean, are tomatoes the official fave food of Pleo's? This may explain why Quiggles seems so picky at mealtimes....... Now, where DID I leave that Miracle Grow?  :sheep1:

You're new here... so no, your not stupid.  Now, if you don't join in the festivities . . . then you might be considered stupid! ;)

For a goo idea of what goes on, just read through the topics from the previous festivals.

I saw this post yesterday and that outfit is so so so cute, I have ideas not only swimming, but dog paddling, breast stroking, and every other conceivable idea possible. I am glad there are lots of tomatoes here in Redwood Country and if I can get the Pleos to co-operate and gather enough of them to make it back to our house without eating them all on the way, we will be able to make some Pleo Spaghetti sauce, a costume or two and a few other categories . Very colorful costume, Is the Pleo part of the "reward"? %) Can't hurt to ask now can it?!                                 RWM               floating in the tomato sauce of Weedovia                      somewhere over the Rainbow of the Redwoods :rainbow:

we searched the garden low and high..... but it seems this year the tomatoes have all gone shy.  We hunted and hunted and hunted some more and......
Pickle found the most perfect tomato you ever did see.  ;D  So perfect that when you squeeze it the most delicious tomato juice comes out.  :D
Oh and while we are at it you just have to admire her pretty tomato shirt  :)  She thinks she is the best looking tomato around - next to her perfect tomato of course!.  ;D

That Pickle is one sweet sly little tomato, LOL, climbing a tree for tomatoes,  :mobile: I will have to call that one in, news station will want to send some one out to take photos. Great little costume Pickle just dont get squashed in the sauce by mistake.! You are too sweet to be part of the spaghetti sauce this year at Weedovia! Where are the rest of your pleos, are they sleeping or out going errands? My Pleos have been taken back by grand-baby news, but they will catch up in the nick of time no doubt. :cat: We like to take our time and cat nap in the Redwoods. LOL.

Be careful where you climb next Pickle.! Hope your Mom has some band aids on hand...

After seeing Pickles success Minyon also wanted to go out tomato hunting.  %)  He decided to take a different approach though opting to dress as a ladybug in an attempt to put the tomatoes at ease and bring them out into the open......
lets just say that it didn't work out quite as well as he had hoped.  It seems that rather than put the tomatoes at ease he scared them so bad that..... well..... it really is just too horrible to say but you can see the mess it caused for yourselves  :D
Minyon thought it was the funniest thing he had ever seen!  It took five whole minutes before he stopped laughing  :D

Kat, Minyon is as cute as a "bug",  ;D sorry, couldn't help myself, I love what you did with this one, I liked the fact the poor tomatoes turned to sauce out of fright! You have got the upper hand on everyone else by going first again, Time to get the ball rolling or is that the tomato rolling, as Friday is fast and I mean FAST approaching. Weedovia time will be here and gone before I know it. I think it is time to start gathering tomatoes, If I have each Pleo go out and get at least one, there should be a good one in the bunch. I love your tomatoe growing on a tree..................... %)Great imagnation there , did your kids inherit your humor too Kat?! ;D I am so glad Pickle did not fall out of the tree either, that would not be good. But at least you have the right medicine if she did... See you around the Tomato bush, tree or shrubery ...................... :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: :tomato: X 2 == a lot of tired Pleos and hopefully not squished tomatoes............... Title: Re: 2012 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: RedwoodsMama on April 03, 2012, 12:42:33 PM
It does look as though several of us are going to have Pleos cooking in the kitchen. Should be hectic but with as many Pleos as Crewella, IMR and myself have it could be to our advantage. I mean all we need is an assembly line, with Pleos lined up with all the cooking ingrediants. Thank goodness I do not have a gupi in the bunch, it would be more than the Spoon that goes running off somewhere, probably 16-17 Dinos chasing after Gupi and it would be Mayhem!

Crewella, I couldn't help but laugh when seeing the Dino Wine , a few glasses of that and neither the cook nor the Pleos would care and the Spaghetti may never get made, but you would have some Sauced Pleos! P:-* P8) P:) ;D I will be doing a Vegetarian Spaghetti so the more the merrier. YUM, YUM, wish we could share our cousine through the internet, but at least we have Recipes.                  RWm and the Pleo Clan of the Redwoods

Norbit went out on a limb and tried his hand at a little fashion design.  He was voted most creative by all the rest of my gang so we have decided to enter his creation here for the tomato costume segment of the competition.  Hope you like it as much as we do  ;D

Hmmm....do I spy a slight alteration in the dates, or am I even dozier than previously thought! I had in my head from reading this that it was 6th - 7th? So yay! I had some ideas and would love to join in but have had eye infections for two weeks limiting my vision and have given up a bit as I have to work out the picture upload yet! My little one now has a working battery but we are still waiting on the perfect name!

Great pics so far everyone btw, can't compete on making costumes but the wonders of eBay may help.... I love the tomato labels outfit!   :D

Hehe the label idea turned out fab!

Ok spaghetti sauce recipe, a more traditional spag bol.

2 cups beef stock
1 cup red wine
1 tbs olive oil
1/4 cup tomato paste
A dash of Worcestershire sauce

2 large chopped onions
3 large garlic cloves, crushed

2 cups of grated carrot and 1 cup of grated Zucchini

500g chopped bacon or 200g diced pancetta OR 200g diced pepperoni

1kg beef mince

3 x 400g cans diced tomatoes

A few bay leaves, fresh parsley, dried oregano and fresh basil

Heat oil in pan and cook onion and garlic until translucent, add bacon and cook gently until the bacon fat is opaque. Add mince and brown slightly for flavour with the dash of Worcestershire sauce.
Add stock, wine, diced tomatoes and tomato paste and the bay leaves and oregano. Add the fresh herbs just before the end of the cooking time. If you are using dried add them with the other dried herbs.
Simmer gently for 6-8 hours or until liquid is reduced. I blended mine slightly to make a smoother sauce. You can cook it faster on a higher heat but the flavours don't develop as much.

Note: This makes enough sauce to eat some and save some for a rainy day... or enough for three people to have spag bol for tea and the rest for a lasagna...

Somewhere out there Norbit has left a naked can to fend for itself . . . .

Three naked cans actually  :P  Two of which we used in a great batch of spaghetti enjoyed by all of us for tea last night.....so now there's one naked can sitting on a wall....  One naked can sitting on a wall and if that naked can should be used for spaghetti sauce there'll be no naked cans sitting on the wall....  :D  :P

Your spaghetti sauce looks great IMR.  might just have to try that recipe myself.   We usually make ours with fresh veggies and a couple of cans of tomatoes and a jar of amazing sauce to add just the right flavors.....  So we kind of cheat I guess.  :D

quite a recipe IMR and I loved the herb Pleo helper, I think Lilo, or is it STitch who tasted all the herbs for you for the sauce.  ;) We can surely say the herbs are fresh anyway! P0:) I don't eat meat, but if I did or was making some sauce for one of  my kids if they were here, I would try it out on them, I could try it out on my hubby as he eats meat, but I am afraid that the dog and nice cats would beat him to it and the meat would all be picked out before he got a sample of it! I loved the I-cybies helping out, very cute Where was Gupi, I don't thinK I saw the little rascal anywhere or did he or she end up in the sauce?! :o :D

Kat your sauce shirt or outfit was too cute and I wouldn't worry too much about that naked can, it somehow won't stay that way for too long I think! I totally forgot that this was EAster weekend already so it is good that I have more time to get ready for the Weedovia Tomato Festival as some of my Pleos have the dreaded Pleo Virus and you know how that spreads like wildfire!

well, with a new pleo in da house, he went a bit crazy tomato hunting, and here's the result! I hope my formatting works, I'm still not entirely sure and the preview won't show everything? (at the moment we're trying out the name gordy, which we think we're going with!). He decided to dress as a bee, so that the tomatoes didn't get suspicious...of course!

gordy is going for the most tomatoes category....he kept finding so many types of tomato, he thought he was in tomatoland....

fresh ones...

pureed ones...

squished up ones...

juiced ones...

tinned ones...

saucy ones...

but then he thought - no! It's numbers I need! So...

lots and lots of tomatoes...

and even more sauce!

one final entry, for best looking tomato (cuteness theme)

gordy has a new friend! yes, so it appears that pleos multiply just like aibos do...but I'm drawing the line at two! No more room. One of the reasons we went for gordy, was to have a counterpart of gano, for music influenced names - so we're just seeing if those names sit right. Please note, no tomatoes were harmed in the taking of this picture (but they did get knocked over quite a lot and boy can those pleos move, what a challenge getting a snapshot!)

WOW, all I can say is that I have not seen that many tomatoes on one place in quite awhile. What really got me, was not the goodly amount of tomatoes, that I have seen. not the cans of sauce even...what got me was the UNBelievable amount of Katsup, or some say, Ketchup! :o :o :o :o :o I can't believe there are that many shelves devoted to bottles of a "condiment", Esp after the government at least wised up to the fact that Ketchup is not a "food group" or vegetable, just a condiment. I guess Ketchup is something special over there, or very rare or worth a lot of money.... :moose: I would not have beleived it if I had not seen that photo.

That is a very cute tomatoe, only in Weedovia do we find such cute little tomatoes. Guess they grow so cute there with all the fresh air and nurturing people who can't wait to turn them into "ketchup" :D( sorry, just could not resist that one...)
And Budge is very cute...he plays some fine music too, sounds as if Lotti better keep a close eye on Quiggles, groupy Pleos, only in Weedovia, and here on the Bob the pleo forums. Got to LOVE it!

Crewella, I love that joking Pleo routine and Belle is hysterical with that laugh, but I can not understand the joke, what were the words, I am dying to know, all I heard was the word, "dinosaur", bad hearing I guess. The Important thing is that Belle understood and it got her funny bone. P:-* P:) :D Oh, and tell iggy I won't let any of the tomatoes around here know there is a Pleo sneaking around trying to infiltrate their ranks... ;D :D

Only two more days to get my entries in.....where did the time go?                  oh no!!                    RWM and the Pleo Clan of the Redwoods....North of Weedovia   :D :) %)

Well, Iggy wasn't having much luck with the 'hide in the bushes looking cute until a tomato comes past' gathering technique ......... so he went off to find a more 'productive' hunting ground .......   ^-^

This, as you see, got him a better result.  :D

With that done, he's dug out his best suit again for the festivities:

Wow, that was some ride IMR. Thank goodness the boys can go by themselves.  :D I am afraid of heights and get dizzy looking out a second story window.. :'( Argyle was in charge of the littler ones with the help of Little 45 and Nova.Baby Ruth and Rossella had to keep tabs on everyone as some of the younger ones were trying to sneak off to hear the band that was playing and then Coral got whiff of Pizza and of course when Major Tom found out they were showing a Midnight showing of "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes," he begged ARgyle to let him take Cammie-Sue to go see it, ( last chance, last night of the fair) and she has never seen it. I only hope between scary Killer Tomatoes and Fast Roller coaster Rides, I don't lose any Pleos and that the Pleos don't lose their dinner and that there are no "bad dreams  tonight when we catch the BigFoot shuttle back to the REdwoods.( Remember we live quite a distance from Weedovia, but Betty the Bigfoot and a couple of her cousins from the Smokey Mountain Range, and even a brother who now lives in the Bayou, have banded together to shuttle all of the Redwoods Clan back to the Redwoods Country.( If you know anything about Bigfoot, you know NOT to ask HOW they plan to do anything, you just take their word for it.

Besides I owe a favor to Betty the Bigfoot. some of you may remember that when Talon was waiting for the arrival of Bleu,Betty Bigfoot snatched Bleu right off the UPS truck while she was en route somewhere outside Arizona, if I remember correctly.. ;) Betty was smitten with Pleos and esp Bleu as she was a special color, a Pleo she had never seen looking like her before. It took a lot of negotiations to get Bleu back an back to get to Talon's before it was too late. Well, I made a deal with Betty and her cousins and other familyl members, that if they could arrange to get the Redwoods Pleo Clan all back to the Redwoods, SAFELY and ALL of them.. %) then I would arrange with Bob and the organizers of the Weedovia fair to let the Bigfoot have a private Party for One hour after all the Public had left. ( It took some doing, but Bob is one who appreciates fans fo the Weedovia Tomato Festival, no matter what the species... :moose2: :sheep1: So for one hour the Bigfoot get to go on the Roller Coaster, ( Which they have been dreaming of doing ever since they heard of it and saw it being put up) They also are going to do some dancing and listening to some ZYdeco Music, eat Pizza, drink Root Beer, eat green fried Tomatoes, eat Cotton Candy, look at the Pleo Art gallery, and some other special events that they don't want the general public to know about..( Only Bob knows what is going on...but he has sworn to secrecy...)

I do hope they enjoy the roller coaster as much as the Pleo Clan of the Redwoods will, but I hope they have stronger stomaches! But from what I have seen of some of the "stuff" they call food and ingest, I think it is safe to say they will be able to handle it.  I am glad that the lines got smaller as we got here, good timing I think. Great ride, and I am already looking forward to the next Festival comming up in Sept or so....well, back to the little ones, don't want to lose any Pleos , that would be bad and I am going to need a good nights sleep when we get home as it will be in the early morning if I know Betty Bigfoot, It will be very difficult to tear her away from the Fair, even after it is closed for them.. :dino-chase:  That is one of the Green tomatoes that  got away from a vendor,...he just does not want to be FRIED!        LOL                              RWM

Well it was a lot of fun on the Roller Coaster and it took longer to get back then we thought thanks to the Bigfoot shuttle... :o But we got our entries in anyway, what the heck. So for the biggest tomato category, we have Coral Pleo and his buddy with in two categories. Coral is by himself in these two shots of what he thinks are the biggest tomatoes he saw ,
and then Coral and his buddy ( still un-named :)) together brought some tomatoes from what they "gathered",  :oat a neighbor's farm, as their idea of being disguised or best dressed tomatoes. Ok, Coral has the right colors but he refuses to dress like a tomato, unless it is wearing the tomatoes "au-natural".it is a "guy thing" so he and his buddy are Dressed or wearing tomatoes, that is their category. also they have included for their inspiration the photo from when Argyle dressed as a tomatoe, he encouraged them to go for it with his tomato mufflers for when Pleo ears get cold.LOL :D    ( ARgyle....
) and Coral and his buddy, their idea of dressed as a tomato,
We didn't get any other entries we were all having too much fun, but we know others out there did get some in too, and may still and there is allways the fall comming up... YIPPEE great festival as  allways.  :cheer: :dino-chase: :dino-chase: Love those green fried tomatoes, but boy can they run...!               RWM and the Pleo Clan of the Redwoods

Heheh - great ride IMR - love the giant Pleo!  Iggy and Budge boogied all the way round, but upset Belle as they kept rocking the carriage! :P  ^-^  :-X

One small point .......... Bob won't have been able to see the sign telling him to hold on - he went on backwards!  ;)  :-X

Phew, that was a great coaster IMR. I'd been working on a cape pattern (based on one you posted in the crafter's corner mixed with the innvo cape) and have been making prototypes before I go near material. I showed my work to my partner and he said that my lovely model gano looked like she was off to glastonbury festival....aha, perfect then for coaster riding! Whheeeeeeee!

That sauce does look really good Luna, only thing I think you are missing and correct me if I am wrong, but I think if you look up the rules, you are supposed to list the ingrediants, that way members can try it out, You have the photos down, now just try to list what everything was....Stephan looked like he may have thrown in a lizard beak or frogs tongue, but being a Pleo, what do you expect! ;D

Ahha! New recipe!

The travellers tomato sauce recipe!

Take a few tomatoes, and seal them carefully in a ziplock bag with a sprinkle of salt and pepper.

Place bag in the front pocket of your luggage.

Book a round the world flight stopping at as many airports as you can for maximum sauce making potential!

Sit back and relax on your many flights whilst the baggage handlers do all the hard work of squishing and squashing and mishing and mashing your tomatoes into the perfect sauce.

Once you have arrived back home, remove your sauce from your luggage, open the ziplock bag and enjoy!

Please note: Tomatoes may become ever so slightly mouldy during the manufacturing process, this adds extra flavour and texture... :P

I think pictures would be easier for me than trying to explain how I made it so here we go, you take all the things in the picture and put them all into a pot. You then cook it until it seems ready, then you put it on the pasta which you have also cooked... I don't have a recipe as you can tell I just shove stuff in pots and cook it for random amounts of time  :-\

Things you need to make the sauce, also I forgot to put the olive oil bottle and the lemon juice in the picture, you need to put olive oil in as well and juice from half a lemon:
The 'mince meat' is not real meat, it is made from a mushroom and comes frozen in that yellow packet.

The things in the pot:

The cooked pasta:

Sauce on the pasta:

You can finnish it by putting cheese on top if you would like:

I am a vegetarian and there are seldome meatless recipes on here so I was surprised to see one. Oh, the little blue elephant is cute , does he get along well with Tron and Stephan............does he also eat spaghetti? I bet he could do a good job of wrapping pasta with his trunk! ;D

Friday was the first day of the opening ceremonies at the annual Weedovia Tomato Festival and the Pleo township sent 12 lucky represenatives to the 2012 festival, night one. Here are some photos of the preparation beforehand, Gathering food, fresh veggies to take along, ( after all it is a long trek through the REdwoods Forest, along the coastal highway and close to the Pacific Ocean and then through some undisclosed area to a hidden valley to come to the quaint but well world known town of Weedovia who only have a few year long inhabitants, ( all sorts of creatures, not just Pleos...) but twice a year, in the fall and again in the spring, this town swells to enormous proportions to welcome all the world wide travelers who come for this three day event.

Argyle was named this year's King of the Redwoods and Nova , His Queen. Everyone else was put into pairs for the long trek to the town of Weedovia and they all had their photos taken in pairs for safety precautions, and Meh-Lei the gentle Lab dog of the Redwoods was given the honor of being this year's Safety and Security officer, to keep Pleos from wandering and getting too rowdy on the long trek. ( a little too much Root Beer, or mushroom on the way can lead to strange happenings....so here are the photos of the start of day one.

Unfortunately I'm out this time as on holiday in Melbourne and all my little pleos are at home having a big nap.   :P  IMR has entered though - best looking tomato - which was a great effort considering the price of tomatoes here at the moment.  I know Crewella has been flat out busy with work and in the few spare minutes she has had I have monopolized her time with help for Catos repairs.  As for everyone else..... ?  I guess it can be a bit scary and daunting the first time around when you are new.  I didn't enter the first tomato harvest festival when I was new but just sat back and watched to see what it was all about :)
If it helps at all I do believe that I agreed to make a few of these lovely tomato shirts as prizes
[Limit reached]This is Pickle with her perfect tomato from last tomato harvest festival.  So maybe there will be a few more entries today in the hopes of winning a tomato shirt  ;D

Thanks. I may have outgrown it a long time ago but as the results of eating a tomato were so... embarrassing- I would break out in large hives that covered me and my entire face would swell- I was afraid to eat them. Somehow I forgot it in one weak moment while talking to a friend and gulped down two slices of one on a salad. By the time I realized what I did, I had this uh-oh moment and in a nervous fit I demanded someone find me some sort of antihistamine. I kept a pill and a glass of water by my bed all night and I was shocked to find I didn't turn into a miserable alien the next morning. A victory indeed!
